Why Loni captured the public attention instead of Jan is one of those mysteries, like Bill Clinton's second term, that sometimes make me think I'm the only sane person on the planet. I don't know very much about Jan's private life. She was born in North Hollywood on July 3, 1949, and was married to James Brolin for some years. (He's now married to, of all people, Barbra Streisand, and I've been seeing him a lot more on TV lately.) It interferes with communication devices, causes local oral-dental problems, and is a barrier to interpersonal relationship building. It is not uncommon for peers to avoid patients who drool. Many children who drool do not learn full speech because nobody will hold a conversation with them. The drugs for drooling have many systemic side effects. The combination of those effects and interactions with other required medications often makes drug treatment undesirable. We have initiated a program of transtympanic neurectomy and chorda tympanotomy. Performed as outpatient surgery, a very substantial reduction of drooling to near zero is reliably attained. The effects are nearly immediate in children. In adults, due to pooling within the glands, the full effect takes two to three months to level out as the longstanding glandular tissue hypertrophy (bloating) resolves. This surgery is microscopic in nature and quite unique to our program. The nerves to the glands in the mouth travel through the middle ear. The surgery of cochlear implants has generated new approaches of which we can take advantage. When he talks it seems like his articulators do not make contact, and he speaks rapidly which makes him unintelligible. He also drools a lot. I'm not sure whether he is apraxic or not.
