Dwarfism
n : a genetic condition resulting in short stature.
Dwarf
1. A diminutive human being.
adjective
1. A reference to anything much below the usual or average size; as, dwarf tree; dwarf honeysuckle.
Midget
1. Offensive. An extremely little person who is of proportionate stature.
2. A small or miniature version of something.
3. A class of small objects, as a class of very small sailboats or racing cars. adjective 1. Miniature; diminutive. 2. Belonging to a type or class much smaller than what is considered standard: a midget automobile. Note: We are first and foremost human beings, it is secondary that we are human beings who are of restricted growth. Use of the word "midget" to describe someone of short stature is considered extremely offensive by some people. It is better to refer to someone of short stature as a "Little Person" or "Dwarf". Also, some people find the term "dwarf" as equally offensive as "midget". If people, both average and short stature, were able to place their humanity before everything else, the world might be a much better place. The more we stick labels on each other, the more we segregate ourselves, and the more we encourage ignorance and prejudice. Names From Around The World Worldwide Dwarf Population There are many conditions and diseases that can cause short stature. Some of these conditions involve a primary bone disorder - the bones do not grow and develop normally. These conditions are called skeletal dysplasia. Over 500 specific skeletal dysplasias have been identified. Of these, Achondroplasia is the most common, affecting about 80% of all Little People. An individual with Achondroplasia has disproportionate short stature. It occurs in all races and with equal frequency in males and females, and affects about one in every 40,000 children (this was the most conservative estimate available).

Welcome to PrimordialDwarfism.com , a site dedicated to educating and supporting families affected by Primordial Dwarfism. First, a definition... Primordial Dwarfism is a category of disorders with many subtypes. Its definition is vague but basically means that these children are profoundly growth delayed for their gestational age before birth and at birth .There may be several links to why this occurs. Some of these subtypes are:
  • Osteodysplastic 1, 2a, 3 Seckel Russell-Silver Meyer-Gorlin other
The picture above was taken at the 2000 Annual Convention of Little People of America (LPA) in Minneapolis, MN. Dr. Charles Scott (seated, center) of the DuPont Hospital for Children, chaired a group session that represents possibly the largest gathering in history of people diagnosed with a rare form of Primordial Dwarfism. The picture below was taken at a gathering of families of Primordial Dwarfism children in Wisconsin in 2002.

Little People of America
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What is the definition of dwarfism? A: Little People of America (LPA) defines dwarfism as a medical or genetic condition that usually results in an adult height of 4'10" or shorter, among both men and women, although in some cases a person with a dwarfing condition may be slightly taller than that. Q: What are the most common types of dwarfism? A: By far the most frequently diagnosed cause of short stature is achondroplasia , a genetic condition that results in disproportionately short arms and legs. (The term "disproportionate" is meant only as a point of comparison with people who do not have achondroplasia or any other type of skeletal dysplasia. The arms and legs of a person with achondroplasia are perfectly appropriate for someone with that genetic condition.) The average height of adults with achondroplasia is 4'0". Other genetic conditions that result in short stature include spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SED) diastrophic dysplasia pseudoachondroplasia hypochondroplasia , and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) . As one might expect from their names, pseudoachondroplasia and hypochondroplasia are conditions that are frequently confused with achondroplasia; diastropic dysplasia occasionally is, too. OI is characterized by fragile bones that fracture easily.

I'd like to add that the people who have contributed to this site are being extremely generous and honest in sharing these little guys. In order to lessen the chances of producing dwarves, or eradicate the risk altogether, we need to learn all we can about them as well as find a way to test for the gene or genes that cause it. Since it is such a prevalent problem in our breed, we feel that sharing what we learn and know is the first major step in this process which can only be good for the breed as a whole. These exceptional individuals are by no means a goal of breeding, but neither should they be kept secret. We don't know yet for sure the causes of dwarfism. Join me in applauding the contributors' bravery and farsightedness. If you have any information to contribute to this page, please email me

for the animals about me ... click here Intro - Hello and welcome to the fun-filled life of me - Kim. To lay it all out: I'm 21. I live in Ca. And I have one sibling. I can be very sarcastic at times, with a dry sense of humor, while other times I am beyond dorky. But I'm nice to anyone who is nice to me, my friends and/or family. I also have Achondroplasia (A-cON-dro-pLay-shiA is a type of dwarfism) which makes me short. Click to my FAQs and Bio page if you are interested in knowing more about this lovely condition in connection with my life. Things you should know before surfing through my site: I don't do well with people that have lp fetishes. I'm not a sideshow. I'm not helpless. (Unless you are thinking about giving me money ) And no offence but if you are born before the 70's please don't just email to ask if we can "hook up". I'm not exactly for that. But I do like friends of all ages.
