emetophobia
Norwegian page Hi there! My name is Katla and I have suffered from emetophobia for as long as I can remember. I am 26 years old. I can not remember any incident that could have brought this on, and I have no clue why its still present. I was so fortunate as to find some info on this phobia on the Net, and in addition to that I found a mailing list with people like me. We are quite a bunch, talking through e-mail, sharing thoughts, supporting each other, and I have no words to describe the great feeling that I was no longer alone with this.
The thought that I am weird, antisocial and picky disappeared. I am no longer a wacko or alien in the world. I am free now. Free to be me, free to feel, think, cry, sigh, and yes, I can laugh at myself. I hope that you will find knowledge, either you have emetophobia or not. This page is a copy of our mailing lists old page. That page is gone, and I miss it. So I decided to get it back out there for all to see. Welcome to Gut Reaction's Web Site!
GUT REACTION was formed 1993-4 by a life-long sufferer of emetophobia, a fear of vomiting. Since then, Gut Reaction has been contacted by +60,000 emetophobes and the number grows each day. Currently, up to 1,000 people are visiting this website every week. The last year has seen many additional visits following more than a year of Norwalk virus outbreak s headline news (

Still these reports are continuing in spring 2003 and few of us are feeling 'safe'. Until relatively recently, emetophobia has been largely neglected and overlooked by the medical profession but now four research projects, headed by eminent medical professionals, have been initiated in the hope of finding effective treatment for this condition.

What is Emetophobia?
EMETOPHOBIA is defined as a fear of vomiting and people who suffer from it are known as emetophobes. Emetophobes fall into two categories:-
  • Those who primarily fear THEMSELVES vomiting and Those who primarily fear OTHER PEOPLE vomiting.
  • Generally the phobia starts in childhood and when a parent is uneasy about vomiting, this sometimes leads to the child also developing the phobia. There doesn't appear to be any single cause for developing emetophobia although tentative links have been made with childhood abuse and bad experiences of vomiting e.g. due to food poisoning. However, in the vast majority of cases, the emetophobe has no idea why they have the phobia. Emetophobes can further be divided into two groups:- 'TYPE 1' (Anxiety-Biased) : Those who suffer from an underlying anxiety disorder, often accompanied by panic attacks and mild to moderate agoraphobia. In these emetophobes their anxiety leads to symptoms of nausea, which then induces further anxiety. 'TYPE 2' (Nausea-Biased) : Those who have physical illnesses which can cause symptoms of nausea. This triggers a phobic reaction to the nausea leading to anxiety and possible further symptoms, including more nausea.

    http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/1920/engemet.htm
    What is emetophobia?
Emetophobia is an irrational or excessive fear of vomiting. But nobody likes to vomit. A phobia is distinguished from an ordinary fear by the irrational and excessive anxiety caused by the stimuli for the phobic individual. For example, many people would not want to explore caves because of a fear of snakes. But some people with a snake phobia, called ophidiophobia, are afraid to walk on the sidewalk in downtown Chicago because a snake might be there. So, hundreds of millions of people may fear vomiting, but they don't alter their daily lives because of it the way emetophobics do. The fear is also all-consuming; for most emetophobics, vomiting is their single worst fear. In casual conversation, many phobics say they'd rather die than vomit. (We hope that's overstated.) It's not an overstatement that for many phobics, anxiety about vomiting ruins almost every day. There is another phobia related to emetophobia called social phobia. (Social phobia is a general fear of being judged by other people.) People who are social phobic often have a fear of vomiting in public, but this is not the same as emetophobia. People with social phobia vomit in private with no more anxiety than a normal person would have. (Of course, emetophobics fear vomiting in public at least as much as social phobics do. And some people have both emetophobia and social phobia.) Social phobics make sure they can get to a bathroom if they need to vomit (and this can go to an extreme as well, like insisting on an aisle seat in crowded places), but they don't do all the things that emetophobics do.

Lighthouse: Illuminating the way through emetophobia
Hello, welcome to my home page. I am glad you stopped by. My purpose for this web page is to let people know about an illness called emetophobia. In getting the word "out there" about this disease, I hope am helping the many closet emetophobics who are afraid to let anyone know about thier suffering. What is Emetophobia? Emetophobia is a fear of vomiting. I hate that work and from now on am going to refer to it as "v" or "V-iing." I am not a physician or a mental health worker, so I can only speak from my own personal experiences. For me, the fear, when it strikes, is gripping, often times leading to a panic attack. What Causes Emetophobia? That is hard to say. Some believe it was a traumatic experience v-ing as a child that may have triggered it. Other's believe the root lies in sexual or mental abuse in early life, although very few of these cases have been documented. Another train of thought is that it is a need to feel in control. Unfortunately when you are v-ing, you have no control. I have a friend, who suffers from emetophobia as well, and her counselor believes that the root of her illness reaches back to many bouts with strep throat as a very young child, through these illnesses, she seems to have developed a fear of choking wheich leads directly to her fear of ving. As far as finding the roots to emetophobia, for many sufferers, the root can be found, but there are many paths to explore along the way!

Return to the main page Author's note on the second edition - It is with some hesitation that I release this 2nd edition of the Emetophobia FAQ. Since the first edition was issued in December 1997, I have received nothing but the warmest praise from emetophobics. (You can read some of that here .) The FAQ has been translated into foreign languages, and both galling and rewarding to me, it has been usurped without credit by other emetophobia web sites. I don't wish to disrupt that run of success for my handiwork, and I am grateful for and gratified by the countless thousands of page visits over the years. But the time has come to make revisions, both to clarify things for which new information has emerged since 1997 especially the results from the online survey I've done since November 2000 and to add answers for what are truly the most frequently asked questions from people who read the frequently asked questions. I continue to be touched by the well-wishes from readers of my web site. Sincerely, A.D.S., or "Gumdropper." What is emetophobia?

    Uncommon phobias

Sixteen-year-old Sara suffers from a serious case of emetophobia, a fear of vomiting. It's slightly more unusual than others talked about, but it's still in the top 10 most common phobias. Here's her story.
"I've had emetophobia as long as I can remember, in fact, one of my earliest memories was of my younger sister being sick on me, maybe that triggered it. Then again, it may just have imprinted itself in my mind because I didn't like it."
There are four different categories of emetophobics:
    • Ones who fear themselves vomiting.
    • Ones who fear other people vomiting.
    • Ones who fear both of the above.
    • Ones who fear people seeing them vomit.
I dislike feeling sick, as everyone does, but I dread other people being sick around me. It's not only seeing them, I can't stand the sound of it either, and if someone's sick on TV, I have to cover my eyes and ears while it's happening.
The effect of the phobia on Sara's everyday life:
"I have M.E and for a while, when it was really bad (aged 14-15), I felt nauseous after eating, but as my M.E got better, it went away.

Most emetophobics have a list of foods they won't eat because they suspect them of being likely carriers of food poisoning; many avoid other foods because they associate them with a childhood episode of vomiting. Some of the foods emetophobics avoid have no obvious relation to either of those.
