My stomach hurts...
Emetophobia a serious concern
by Martin Cook Many females that suffer from emetophobia shun pregnancy because of a fear of morning sickness, while others are able to go through a pregnancy and not vomit once. Some emetophobics are unable to care for children, as the child may, and often does, throw up. This also leaves them unable to care for family members or friends who fall ill. Many emetophobics commonly classify different stomach feelings as nausea, such as hunger, gas, heartburn, acid reflux and many others. Surprisingly, emetophobics do not vomit as much as non-emetophobics during illnesses where vomiting is common. On average, sufferers actually experience less instances of vomiting over their lifetime than the general population. This may be explained by the fact that vomiting is controlled by the medulla oblongata of the brain. Many phobics seem to successfully control this bodily urge and wait out the nausea. There is no real cure. Many non-medical approaches at-tempt to promote desensitization to vomiting. Emetophobics have been prescribed anti-nausea drugs, which can cause side effects that are even worse, counterproductively inducing vomiting. Some pursue lifestyles of exceptional hygiene for themselves and their food preparation.

24. What Can I Do For Emetophobia?
What Can I Do For emetophobia? QUESTION I suffer from emetophobia, which is afear of vomiting. I was thrown in a hospital and diagnosed with Anorexia.

What Can I Do For Emetophobia?
QUESTION: Dear Dr. Heller, Please contact me with any information you may have or suggestions. ANSWER: Phobias are intense, irrational fears. Claustrophobia, agoraphobia and social phobia are the most common.
While "desensitization" therapy helps many, some need medication. Virtually all anxiety makes the condition worse. The screening test I use for my patients may give you clues.
SSRI medications like Prozac have helped some patients, but comprehensively treating all the diagnoses listed in that screening test has helped my patients the most.

Designed Thinking Improving Your Thoughts to Better Your World Contrary to popular belief, phobias are not a mental disorder, but a learned response, an intense fear to an object or activity. We often get calls from people telling us "I know this doesn't make sense, but I can't help myself and I just want it to stop". Designed Thinking has assisted people just like you to undo the learned responses their mind has focused on. You too can stop the discomfort and permanently overcome these challenges. What many of our clients have found so amazing is how quickly their phobias can disappear. In overcoming your fears, surface level changes will not help, as they must occur at deeper neurological level, with in your subconscious mind. By rewriting the old unwanted programst, you can shift how you response to these fears. When you do this, your mind will not be able to recreate the past panic you have suffered with, as the fears are simply gone from your way of thinking. Contrary to popular belief, phobias are not a disorder, they are alearned response, of an intense fear to an object or activity.
http://www.designedthinking.com/Fear/Phobias/Defined/defined.html
Contrary to popular belief , phobias are not a disorder, they are a learned response, of an intense fear to an object or activity. And that which can be learned can be unlearned or modified. Hundreds of books have been dedicated to describing how phobias are gotten, what the symptoms are and how are they labeled. In all this data, the two options usually given to overcome phobias are the long term use of medication and the painful process of excessively exposing the person to their fears. On the other hand Designed Thinking takes a gentle approach in assisting our clients to permanently overcome the needless suffering these fears have brought. Our techniques have allowed for the completely elimination of many phobias in just a few sessions. We can do this by rewriting how you internally represent your fears. Usually this will do the trick, though there times when past negative emotions will also need to be lifted. Once this occurs, you will not be able to get your fears back, they are quite simply gone from your way of thinking This is your gateway to dynamically releasing your unwanted fears.

A Phobia is; an external symbolic interpretation,
of an internal anxiety

What does that mean?
When a person finds themselves in a situation that creates intense emotions, the persons 'psyche' has the ability to repress/hide/disavow those emotions. Once those emotions have been bottled up, the psyche can/will create a phobia - to warn the person not to get into that (or any similar) situation again.
Makes sense doesn't it?
Although some Phobias seem to serve an obvious purpose (fear of fire, drowning etc) some appear to make no sense at all! - rest assured though, all Phobias serve a purpose. In therapy, we can find the originating cause (the unconscious conflict) of the Phobia and release it - and when the emotions are released, the phobia disappears. Phobias - Questions and Answers
