It is located in the abdomen between the esophagus and the small intestine. It begins at the connection to the esophagus, called the gastro-esophageal (GE) junction. It ends at the pyloric valve, which is the opening to the duodenum - the first section of the small intestine. The stomach is shaped like the letter J. Nearby, but not attached to the stomach, are such organs as the liver, left kidney with left adrenal gland, pancreas, colon, and spleen. Owing to their close location, any of these other organs may easily become involved when cancer is present in the stomach. The clinical term for cancer of the stomach is gastric cancer. Stomach Functions The stomach's major functions are related to digestion of food. After swallowing, the food is held in the stomach temporarily. The mucus lining of the stomach secretes acidic gastric juices. These act on the food and begin to break it down chemically. At the same time, the stomach's muscle layers contract and squeeze. This churning helps break down the food physically.

The medical term for cancer of the stomach is gastric cancer. It is now clear that Helicobacter pylori infection also plays a role in some but not all of the cancers of the stomach which can occur. Although it is difficult to give exact figures, it is believed that H.pylori infection may play some role in up to 40 - 60% of all stomach cancers. More information will become available as research continues into the relationship between H. pylori and stomach cancer. Apart from H. pylori infection, other factors which have long been recognised as contributing to the risk of a person developing stomach cancer are:
  • smoking diet that is high in salts diet that is low in fresh fruit and vegetables
When one looks at stomach cancer cells under the microscope, there are different types that can be recognised: (1) adenocarcinoma - intestinal type, (2) adenocarcinoma - diffuse type, (3) gastric Maltoma.

      Description
What is cancer of the stomach?
Cancer of the stomach, also called gastric cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the tissues of the stomach. The stomach is a J-shaped organ in the upper abdomen where the food is broken down (digested). Food reaches the stomach through a tube called the esophagus that connects the mouth to the stomach. After leaving the stomach, partially digested food passes into the small intestine and then into the large intestine called the colon. Sometimes cancer can be in the stomach for a long time and can grow very large before it causes symptoms. In the early stages of cancer of the stomach, a patient may have:
      • Indigestion and stomach discomfort A bloated feeling after eating Mild nausea Loss of appetite Heartburn
In more advanced stages of cancer of the stomach, the patient may have:

    http://www.oncodx.com/cancers/gastric.htm
Gastric Cancer Gastric cancers are most frequent in the Far East, specifically Japan, while in the US, the incidence of stomach cancers has actually decreased over the past decade, accounting for approximately 21,000 new cases and 13,000 cancer-related deaths last year. Some of this decrease may be attributable to widespread antimicrobial therapy for eradication of Helicobacter pylori , which harbors a strong association with gastric cancer and the decreased use of salted and smoked foods.
Helicobacter pylori , and usually arises on a backdrop of chronic gastritis, gastric atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia. In contrast, poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas are usually not associated with these changes. Clinically, the latter often present with diffuse thickening of the stomach wall, rather than a discernible mass ( linitis plastica ). The intestinal adenocarcinomas have a better prognosis than the diffuse variant, most of which have spread beyond the confines of the stomach at the time of diagnosis. As with other cancers, stage is the most important determinant of outcome. In Japan, intensive screening modalities have led to the emergence of a new variant called early gastric cancers, in which the primary tumor is restricted to the mucosa or submucosa, irrespective of metastasis, at the time of detection.

Understanding cancer of the stomach (gastric cancer) From the CancerBACUP booklet series Staging of stomach cancer The stage of a cancer is a term used to describe its size and whether it has spread beyond its original site. Knowing the extent of the cancer helps the doctors to decide on the most appropriate treatment. Generally stomach cancer is divided into four stages, from small and localised (stage one) to spread into surrounding structures (stage three) or other parts of the body (stage four). If the cancer has spread to distant parts of the body this is known as secondary cancer (or metastatic cancer). Note: Separate PDQ summaries on Prevention of Gastric Cancer and Screening for Gastric Cancer are also available. In the United States, gastric cancer ranks 14th in incidence among the major types of cancer malignancies. While the precise etiology is unknown, acknowledged risk factors for gastric cancer include: Helicobacter pylori gastric infection, advanced age, male gender, diet including dry salted foods, atrophic gastritis, pernicious anemia, cigarette smoking, Menetrier's disease, and familial polyposis. [ Adenocarcinoma histology accounts for 90% to 95% of all gastric malignancies, and management of this histology will be discussed in this summary. The site of cancer origin within the stomach has changed in frequency in the United States over recent decades. [ ] Cancer of the distal half of the stomach has been decreasing in the United States since the 1930s. However, in the last 2 decades, the incidence of cancer of the cardia and gastroesophageal junction has been rapidly rising. The incidence of this cancer has increased dramatically, especially in patients under 40 years of age. The prognosis of patients with gastric cancer is related to tumor extent and includes both nodal involvement and direct tumor extension beyond the gastric wall. [
