As a breed WT have fewer recognized congenital or inherited diseases than most breeds. In "A Guide to Hereditary and Congenital Diseases in Dogs", (by W. Jean Dodds, DVM, et al, available on-line ), the WT had only 5 known or suspected genetic diseases. These were cataract, glaucoma, lens luxation, hypothyroidism, and von Wildebrand's disease. The latter two are common genetic diseases each known to affect over 50 breeds of purebred dogs. Their dog "Mac" was examined by veterinary ophthamologist Dr. Dennis Olivero in Minneapolis, who remembered seeing a number of similar cases in Welsh Terriers in the past. Dr. Olivero had postulated that primary glaucoma may be an inherited disease in Welsh Terriers as it is in some other breeds, including the Samoyed and Beagle.

This increased pressure damages the optic nerve causing partial vision loss , with blindness as a possible, eventual outcome. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Glaucoma is the third most common cause of blindness in the United States. There are four major types of glaucoma: Open angle or chronic glaucoma Closed angle or acute glaucoma Congenital glaucoma Secondary glaucoma All four types are characterized by increased pressure within the eyeball, and therefore all of them can cause progressive damage to the optic nerve. Increased pressure occurs when the fluid within the eye (called aqueous humor), which is produced continuously, does not drain properly. The pressure pushes on the junction of the optic nerve and the retina at the back of the eye. This reduces the blood supply to the optic nerve, which carries vision from the eye to the brain. This loss of blood supply causes the individual nerve cells to progressively die. As the optic nerve deteriorates, blind spots develop in the field of vision.

¿Qué es el glaucoma? En condiciones normales la presión intraocular oscila entre 10 y 21 mm.Hg. "Glaucoma is a 24-hour-a-day disease, 365 days-a-year disease and you cannot get away from it," he said. The battle over legalizing marijuana for medical purposes has been smoldering for over 30 years. But the issue has been recently fueled by voters in five states Alaska, Arizona, Oregon, Nevada and Washington who passed laws legalizing the drug to ease the symptoms of certain diseases such as glaucoma, AIDS and cancer. Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that can lead to blindness if left untreated. It is caused by an abnormal increase of fluid pressure in the eye which leads to the gradual loss of vision.
