Hodgkin's disease , (also called Hodgkin's lymphoma), is a cancer that starts in lymphatic tissue. Lymphatic tissue includes the lymph nodes and related organs that are part of the body's immune and blood-forming systems. The lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs located underneath the skin in the neck, underarm, and groin. Lymph nodes are also found inside the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. Hodgkin's disease is not contagious. You can't "catch" this disease from another person. What are Lymph nodes? Lymph nodes make and store infection-fighting white blood cells, called lymphocytes . They are connected throughout the body by lymph vessels (narrow tubes similar to blood vessels). Lymph vessels carry a clear, watery luid (lymphatic fluid) that contains lymphocytes. Eventually the lymphatic fluid is emptied into the blood vessels in the left upper chest.

Hodgkin's Disease is the better known form of lymphoma (the other lymphomas are grouped into what is called the Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas The incidence or number of cases of Hodgkin's Disease (about 7100 cases, 3700 men and 3400 women in the US this year) is significant although less than the number of cases of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (about 53,000 in the US this year). More on Hodgkin's incidence Hodgkin's has a long and rich history . The disease was named after Thomas Hodgkin (1798-1866), a English scholar and Quaker physician working at Guy's Hospital in England. Lymphatic disease was first described in 1666 by Malpighi although it was in Hodgkin's 1832 paper On Some Morbid Appearances of the Absorbent Glands and Spleen that cases of Hodgkin's lymphoma were well documented. Hodgkin's name was attached to the disease in 1865 in a paper by Wilks. What now differentiates Hodgkin's Disease is the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells (and variations on this cell) in the cancerous area, a cell specific to Hodgkin's Disease. There is definitive evidence that the the cancerous cells are of B-cell lymphocyte origin. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) also appears to be a factor, at least in some cases - appearing in about 40-50% of Hodgkin's cases. It has recently been found that Interleukin-13, a natural cytokine in the body, may be overproduced by Hodgkin's cancerous cells. What causes Hodgkin's Disease is still being researched.

The authors of a report from the National Tumor Institute in Milan, Italy, used this approach with two standard regimens for Hodgkins' disease. Between 1982 and 1990, they randomized 427 untreated patients to two different sequences of MOPP and ABVD (alternating full-cycle MOPP and ABVD, or a hybrid of one half-cycle of MOPP alternating with one half-cycle of ABVD within one month) for six cycles, followed by radiotherapy. The two regimens gave identical, superior results with complete remission rates of 91% versus 89%, freedom from regression rates of 675 and 69%, and overall survival rates of 74% versus 72%. My Experience With Hodgkin’s Disease By Charles R. Atkins (Excerpted from the May 1997 Living Buddhism , page 13) When I was 36 years old, I experienced a rapid deterioration of health at the beginning of 1987. I had severe back pain, drenching night sweats, insatiable itching, chills, nausea and constant fatigue. By the time all the symptoms had reached their peak, I was diagnosed with fourth-stage Hodgkin’s lymphoma and given a dismal prognosis. Cancerous tumors were behind my ear, on both sides of my neck, in my sternum and abdomen, with a golf-ball-sized tumor fused into my spine. A team of oncologists recommended a six-cycle regimen of aggressive combination chemotherapy followed by complete nodal irradiation. I had practiced Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism for thirteen years and began to apply the method of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo in a life-and-death battle with my illness and the side effects of treatment. With the blessing of my doctors, I followed their protocol to the letter and used chanting to bolster my immune system. I imagined my white blood cells exploding with spiritual energy like the halos of holy light seen in religious paintings. Every morning and evening I would imagine my insides bathed in holy light that would destroy cancer cells and revitalize healthy cells. Four months into my treatment, I became deathly ill. Suffering from a high fever and compromised immune system, I was hospitalized in an isolation room, unable to continue further treatment. Feeling that death was rapidly approaching, I asked visitors to leave and began to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with all the strength I had left, aspiring to crown my life with victory.
