TOBY is the name of a new study that aims to determine whether mild whole body cooling of newborn infants reduces brain injury following asphyxia. The full title of the study is "Whole Body Hypothermia for the Treatment of Perinatal Asphyxial Encephalopathy". The study is funded by the UK Medical Research Council and supported by the NHS Research and Development programme. SCOPE , the charity that provides support for people with disabilities, is advising on how to present information about the study to parents. Following a period of training, participating centres will start enrolling infants into the study from November 2002. For more information see here or contact Dr Denis Azzopardi

Freaky Saying of the DAY!!
If you have a complaint against the Better Business Bureau....who do you tell -Unknown KickAssGear Microsoft ColdCPU NVIDIA ... AMD

Here's a strange one... we found an Advertisement at BestBuy.com yesterday that proclaimed "VisionTek GeForce4 Ti4600 for Special Pre-Order Price of ..the savings is a $200.00 Value ". Normally a "typo" or mistake would be something to the effect of a misplaced decimal point or an accidental wrong price. It usually doesn't consist of adding terms like Special Pre-Order Price and savings is a $200.00 Value , ( since it sounds reasonable $129.00 + $200.00 savings for a card announced that day with no real set price yet ) all over the advertisement. So we did the right thing and CALLED. BestBuy.com confirmed the price of $129.00 twice, at which time they gave us the $200.00 value / saving quotes After a whole day of ordering, they reneged on the deal and cancelled all orders. The money has yet to be refunded. I have made a sign-up page for all of you that placed orders with Best Buy so that we may get as many people taken care of as possible. I have been in contact with them all day....

Winter warning: Hypothermia kills hundreds each year, CDC reports
December 11, 1998
Web posted at: 5:19 p.m. EDT (2119 GMT) ATLANTA (CNN) Cold weather kills more than 700 people a year in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported this week. The government agency said that between 1979 and 1995, 12,368 Americans died of hypothermia, about three deaths per million people. Hypothermia occurs when the body core temperature falls below 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius). Symptoms can include extreme shivering, numbness in limbs, fatigue, shallow breathing, low blood pressure and impaired mental ability. Tips for avoiding exposure hypothermia:
  • Follow the weather reports if you intend to be outside for extended periods. Realize that conditions may be worse than forecast.
  • Dress properly. Wear layered, insulated clothing that doesn't retain moisture (polypropylene or wool) and a windproof outer layer. Always carry raingear. If possible, avoid going out in storms.

This difference is due to the much higher heat capacity of water than of air. Offered here is an interesting life science application of water's high heat capacity and its serious implications for the maintenance of body temperature and the prevention of hypothermia in warm-blooded animals.

Hypothermia treatment starts in the field by rewarming (stabilizing) victims with equipment supplying warm humidified air or oxygen and warm IV-fluids to minimize core-temperature afterdrop. The growing popularity of outdoor recreation, has resulted in greater demand for an effective on-site method of treating hypothermia. Other than for mild cases, the most effective and safest treatment for all levels of hypothermia is the addition of heat to the body core, rather than via the periphery. Research on hypothermia conducted at the University of Victoria (Victoria, B.C., Canada) developed the survival behaviors such as the HELP - and the - HUDDLE - survival positions, now promoted world wide, the cold water immersion survival - time table and the Uvic Thermo-float jacket.

Physiology, Signs, Symptoms and Treatment Considerations
As you know, hypothermia is a temperature related disorder. Therefore, it is necessary to understand human physiology as it pertains to temperature stress. Man is considered to be a tropical animal. Normal functioning of the human animal requires a body temperature of 37 degrees Celcius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit). Comfortable human survival using only that protection from temperature stress which is provided physiologically at birth would therefore require an environment providing a temperature of 37 degrees Celcius, plus or minus perhaps 1 degree. The body can self-compensate for small upward or downward variations in temperature through the activation of a built-in thermoregulatory system, controlled by temperature sensors in the skin. The response to an upward variation in body temperature is the initiation of perspiration, which moves moisture from body tissues to the body surface. When the moisture reaches the surface it evaporates, carrying with it a quantity of heat. The explanation for a person becoming thirsty when exposed to a hot environment for a period of time is that fluids lost due to perspiration must be replaced. The response to a downward variation in body temperature is shivering, which is the body's attempt to generate heat. Shivering is an involuntary contraction and expansion of muscle tissue occurring on a large scale. This muscle action creates heat through friction.

    Immersion Hypothermia and Cold Water Near-drowning What is hypothermia and near-drowning? Hypothermia is a lowered body temperature less than 95 degrees F. Cold water near-drowning is considered a submersion accident often leading to unconsciousness or coma in water temperatures of 70 degrees F or less. A long submersion time is considered 4 to 6 minutes or greater. (See further discussion below) Why is this important to scuba divers? Decompression sickness or air embolism often lead to immersion hypothermia and cold water near-drowning as the natural consequences of these diving accidents. How does this occur? The body loses heat to the environment by:
    • Conduction , the transfer of heat by direct contact with the water, air or ground Convection , the transfer of heat by air or water that moves away Radiation, the transfer of energy by non-particulate means, heat loss from an unprotected head Evaporation , conversion of water droplets (sweat) into water vapor, thereby absorbing calories of heat.
    IMMERSION HYPOTHERMIA Why is hypothermia dangerous?

    Hypothermia: A Cold Weather Hazard
    Tony is a retired mailman. He has lived in New England his whole life and has seen some harsh winters. None, however, was as cold or snowy as one winter a few years ago. First, the temperature dipped to below zero and a snowstorm left 2 feet of snow. Then an ice storm caused lots of broken power lines. That meant Tony had no heat in his house, but he also couldn’t leave. The temperature inside dropped to 60° F quite quickly. When his neighbor rang the doorbell to check on him the next day, Tony was confused, and his speech was slurred. He was taken to the emergency room. A doctor examined him and warmed him up. Tony went to his brother’s house until the heat came back on. Turns out he’d had accidental hypothermia. Cold weather is very risky for older people. Almost everyone knows about winter dangers such as broken bones from falls on ice or breathing problems caused by cold air. But the winter chill can also lower the temperature inside your body. That can be deadly if not treated quickly. This drop in body temperature, often caused by staying in a cool place for too long is called hypothermia (hi-po-ther-mee-uh).

    HYPOTHERMIA
    Hypothermia can be divided into accidental, primary and secondary ( Table 1 ). Cases of idiopathic hypothermia, sometimes spontaneous and episodic, have been reported. These are usually not severe or protracted, however. Table 2 along with the associated physiological changes. Hypothermia may also be acute (minutes), subacute (hours) and chronic (days) depending on the time of development. Hypothermia may also be thought of in terms of:
    • excessive heat loss: cold weather or immersion in cold water;
    • abnormal heat conservation and reduced heat production hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia (substrate depletion), hypopituitarism, hypoadrenalism, uremia, spinal cord transection above T1, peripheral neuropathy, autonomic neuropathy and certain drugs (alcohol, barbiturates, neuroleptics);
    • defective heat regulation: hypothalamic lesions including Wernicke's encephalopathy, strokes, tumors head trauma, and congenital abnormalities (e.g., Shapiro's syndrome).
    Pathophysiology
    Hypothermia is due to a disturbance in the net regulation of heat production and heat loss weighted towards the latter. This can result from defective homeostatic regulation, reduced metabolism (including diminished cellular metabolism and shivering), or increased loss from exposure to extreme cold or impaired cardiovascular response, especially loss of vasomotor tone. Acute hypothermia is usually the result of submersion in cold water, subacute hypothermia often results from cold air while chronic hypothermia relates to underlying disease with disordered or insufficient autoregulation.
