hypothyroidism is rare in toy and miniature breeds of dogs. Researchdefinitely indicates that most hypothyroid cases are inherited.

HYPOTHYROIDISM IN THE DOG Hypothyroidism in the dog , where the thyroid gland is not secreting normal amounts of thyroid hormone, is the most common endocrine gland disorder in the dog. The endocrine glands are listed below... Thyroid Gland (the Master Gland) Hypothalamus Pancreas Thymus Anterior Pituitary Pineal Gland Testis Ovary Parathyroid Glands Posterior Pituitary Adrenal Glands All of these tissues secrete chemical substances called hormones that have a profound effect on certain "target" tissues. But of all those glands and hormones, the thyroid gland is considered the Master Gland. If the thyroid gland is malfunctioning, every cell in the body is affected. No wonder dogs, properly diagnosed with hypothyroidism and placed on appropriate thyroid hormone supplements, will look, act and feel so much better than before treatment. SIGNS
Most dogs show signs of hypothyroidism between 3 and 5 years of age but diagnosis isn't made in some dogs until they are years older. Males and females seem to be equally affected. Routine testing of young dogs is

  • "My doctor tells me that I am running the risk of developing osteoporosis in later life because my TSH is below normal."
  • "I have just had a thyroid function test, and my doctor tells me that my levels are normal, and yet I still feel rotten."
  • "Can you give me the name of a thyroid sympathetic doctor who will listen to how I'm feeling, instead of just looking at my thyroid function test results?"
  • "My doctor tells me that I should lose weight. I try very hard to eat properly, and to exercise, and yet I cannot lose weight."
"My doctor tells me that I am running the risk of developing osteoporosis in later life because my TSH is below normal." When I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism my TSH was not that high and, except for a blip when my thyroxine dose was cut, has consistently been below the reference range. Too often have I heard that my TSH was too low and that I was running the risk of developing osteoporosis, but fortunately my endocrinologist told me that this low TSH was okay. Yes, it is well established that people who have ever suffered from the elevated levels of free T

Letter from a woman with hypothyroid and depression
Dear Friend, I have struggled with depression for years, off and on. I always blamed it on my thyroid disease. You see, the symptoms are very similar. I have a thyroid disease called Hashimoto's Disease. It is degenerative hypothyroid condition. Hypothyroid requires consistent and constant thyroid hormone replacement therapy. One pill a day. For the rest of my life. Sounds easy enough, doesn't it? The kicker is that sometimes my thyroid starts to fail. I get depressed, I lose energy, I gain weight. Sound familiar? About four years ago I found myself in an abusive relationship. I shattered a glassed picture frame, and found myself sitting on the floor, holding a piece of glass, and wondering whether anyone would even care if I cut myself. I knew the one person I wanted to care would not. A friend talked me down from the crisis, and I realized that I had never felt suicidal. Not in all the worst downs of dealing with my thyroid disease. Several of my friends struggled with depression, and quite frankly, I was starting to act a lot like them. I became frightened. Depression was a scary thought. I waited until morning, then called my physician. She got me in to see her immediately. When I told her how I had been feeling, she did two things. She took a blood sample, so that she could verify my thyroid hormone level, and she wrote out a prescription for Zoloft. She even gave me samples, so I would be able to start immediately.

What is Hypothyroid disease?
A Hypothyroid condition is a thyroid disease associated with inadequate levels and/or activity of T and T Symptoms of Hypothyroid disease include lowered energy, edema, negative changes in skin, hair and nails and lowered capacity to heal, which are all associated with lowered thyroid hormone activity. Note:
Genetic, environmental, lifestyle and previous trauma are all contributing factors in the rate and extent of age-related degenerative and metabolic conditions.

Congenital Hypothyroid Treatment Center
at Schneider Children's Hospital
What is congenital hypothyroidism?
Congenital hypothyroidism is a condition that occurs in newborn infants in which the thyroid gland does not work properly. Usually it occurs because the thyroid gland does not develop normally.
How common is congenital hypothyroidism?
Congenital hypothyroidism is relatively common. Overall, it occurs in approximately 1 out of every 4000 babies. It is more common in white infants (about 1 in 2000 infants), less common in black infants (1 in 32,000) and it occurs twice as commonly in female infants than male infants.
What will happen if an affected baby is not treated?
Every baby born in the USA is screened for congenital hypothyroidism. This is because congenital hypothyroidism is a very serious condition. If an affected child is not treated, the child's brain may not develop normally and the child may become mentally retarded. As long as treatment is started in the first month of life, we expect the child to develop normally and have normal intelligence.
How do you treat congenital hypothyroidism?

Take the Hypothyroid test if you feel you might have it or merely be borderline which is a common reason for miscarriages: When you first wake up in the morning, take your temperature for 15 minutes before getting up or moving, under your arm. Be careful not to move and to hold it still. If your temps are 97.6 degrees for several days in a row than you are at least borderline or have temporary hypothyroid. You may have what would be called "symptomatic hypothyroid" which has more to do with your hormones being off than you thyroid itself. Be sure not to on any medication unless ALL of your T-levels are out of ranges. Otherwise you will be hurting your chances more.
If you have low temps but not clinical hypothyroid, this may be brought on by hormonal balance which can be corrected quickly by natural progesterone supplementation and iodine supplementation like kelp. Iodized salt is not the best source of iodine. Iodized salt is much like using bleached white flour with vitamins put into it rather than the actual iodine that comes from the ground and sea.
Kelp is also very important to the diet. See

Thyroid, hypothyroid, low thyroid hormone, is the most underdiagnosed illness. Itis also the reason we do not use Synthroid to treat symptoms of hypothyroid.
http://www.renewman.com/Thyroid0319.htm
Thyroid, hypothyroid, low thyroid hormone, is the most under-diagnosed illness. See symptoms and treatment THYROID Thyroid Explaining the function of the thyroid is complicated at best. But talk about it we must because of its importance. Therefore we will endeavor to make it simple and keep it in general terms. The thyroid gland and its hormones are the traffic direction center of the hormone system. Thyroid hormones are important in their own right but more so in relation to the function of other hormones. Put simply, a healthy thyroid function is critical to a healthy function of the hormone system in general. As people age, like other hormones, thyroid hormones tend to decline. People tend to become hypothyroid. At a recent conference the statement was made by a noted physician that hypothyroidism in aging adults is perhaps the most undiagnosed and under treated illness in modern medicine. Doctors are not doing the testing, are doing the wrong tests and when give test results are giving the wrong treatment. A few symptoms of hypothyroidism:
  • Low energy fatigue Weight gain Water retention Hair loss (a major cause) Dry skin and brittle nails Feeling cold in normal temperatures Anxiety and irritability Depression High cholesterol Mental fogginess
There is a simple test you can do at home to determine if you might be hypothyroid. Take a thermometer, When you wake in the morning - before getting out of bed - place it under your armpit. Do this for three mornings. If your average temperature is 97.8 degrees or less, you may very well be hypothyroid. This simple test sometimes will show problems that do not show up on lab tests. Be careful to work with a doctor who knows the importance of lab testing backed up by checking axillary temperatures.

Overexpression of SR Ca 2+ ATPase improves cardiac contractile function in hypothyroidmice. Bluhm WF, Meyer M., Sayen MR, Swanson EA, and Dillmann WH.
http://www.wbluhm.com/hypothyroid.html
Overexpression of SR Ca ATPase improves cardiac contractile function in hypothyroid mice Bluhm W.F., Meyer M., Sayen M.R., Swanson E.A., and Dillmann W.H. Objective : Prolonged cardiac contraction and relaxation in hypothyroidism are in part related to diminished expression of the gene coding for the calcium pump of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SERCA2a). Therefore, we examined whether or not transgenic SERCA2a gene expression in mice may compensate for the cardiac effects of hypothyroidism. Methods : SERCA2a mRNA and protein were analyzed from hearts of euthyroid and hypothyroid mice of wild-type or SERCA2a transgene status. Contractile function was studied in isolated left ventricular papillary muscles. Results : We found significant decreases of SERCA2a mRNA and protein levels in hearts of hypothyroid wild-type mice in comparison with euthyroid wild-type mice (controls). Papillary muscles from hypothyroid wild-type mice showed significant increases in time to peak contraction and relaxation times compared with controls. In contrast, SERCA2a mRNA and protein levels were significantly higher in hypothyroid SERCA2a transgenic mice than in hypothyroid wild-type mice. The transgene led to a functional improvement by compensating for the prolonged contraction and relaxation of papillary muscles. Conclusions : Our murine model of hypothyroidism revealed decreases in SERCA2a gene expression accompanied by prolonged contraction and relaxation of papillary muscles, and an improvement of the contractile phenotype due to compensated SERCA2a gene expression in SERCA2a transgenic mice.

What Your Hypothyroid Patients Should Know about Synthroid
by John Lowe,MA,DC Synthroid, a brand of thyroid hormone, is the third most prescribed drug in the United States. Over the past year, the product has been the subject of intense controversy. Although DCs do not prescribe Synthroid, the controversy is relevant to us. Synthroid is likely to limit the effectiveness of the musculoskeletal treatments you provide for your hypothyroid patients. The poor treatment outcome leaves patients suffering and DCs frustrated and perplexed. Background I began treating hypothyroid patients with medical physicians in the mid-1980s. Then, as now, Synthroid was the only brand of thyroid hormone that mainstream physicians would prescribe. Their refusal to prescribe other brands was the successful outcome of a powerful marketing campaign by Synthroid's manufacturers - formerly Knoll Pharmaceuticals (Knoll) and now Abbott Laboratories (Abbott). The marketing was reinforced by an almost unanimous endorsement of Synthroid by the endocrinology specialty. Mainstream medical physicians believed that Synthroid was the absolute pinnacle of the development of thyroid hormone products. Some of my hypothyroid patients improved or recovered with the use of Synthroid. Many didn't, however, and for a time I thought these patients' persisting hypothyroid-like symptoms must be caused by nonthyroid disorders. I soon learned that hypothyroidism was the cause of their symptoms and that Synthroid failed to relieve them.
