CONGENITAL CENTRAL hypothyroidism is a rare endocrine disorder of both man and animals resulting from a deficiency of, or end-organ resistance to, thyrotro-pin (TSH) or thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) at birth. Because thyroid hormone secretion is essential for normal postnatal development of the nervous and skeletal systems, congenital hypothyroidism is characterized by disproportionate dwarfism, central and peripheral nervous system abnormalities, and mental deficiency. In addition, many of the signs of adult-onset hypothyroidism, such as lethargy, unappetence, constipation, dermatopathy, and hypothermia may be observed. Although hypothyroidism is often observed in human infants, TSH deficiency is an uncommon cause of congenital thyroid disease. Only 3.6% of the total cases of canine hypothyroidism occur in dogs younger than 1 year of age, and even fewer are the result of pituitary or hypothalmic disease. If TSH deficiency does occur, it is often associated with panhypopituitarism secondary to cystic Rathke's pouch. Congenital isolated TSH deficiency is extrememly rare and has never been reported in the dog. The purpose of this study was to report the clinicopathologic features of congenital hypothyroid dwarfism in a family of Giant Schnauzers, In two of the five dogs, it was documented that the hypothyroidism was central in origin and appeared to result from isolated TSH deficiency.

HYPOTHYROIDISM:
An Undertreated Illness by Ralph J. Luciani D.O., M.S., PhD., M.D.(H)
Reprinted from Natural Living Magazine About the Clinic Programs Policies Therapies Dr. Luciani Hypothyroidism is usually described as a condition caused by an under-function of the thyroid gland. However I prefer to describe it as a condition whereby the body is deprived of the influence of active thyroid hormone. I prefer this definition because there are several conditions where in the thyroid gland may be functional, but either the quality of the active hormone is inadequate, or toxic substances in the body curtail transport of the hormone across cell membranes depriving the cell of adequate amounts of hormone. Of course the thyroid gland itself may be dysfunctional, unable to produce adequate amounts of thyroid hormone, or as we age, active thyroid hormone is produced less in the body. Symptoms of low thyroid function are fatigue, sleep disturbance, weakness, depression, weight gain, dry skin, falling hair, cloudy thinking or abnormal hormone function. Many patients have these classic signs but are never diagnosed with this problem because their thyroid tests are normal. PROPER THYROID FUNCTION As with all glands in the body, the pituitary gland exerts primary control. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is produced in the pituitary and stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroxin T

Hypothyroid Problems in Pets

Dr. Ian Sandler If your pet has a problem with excessive shedding or seems too tired to play catch, it may be a sign of a thyroid problem. Dr. Ian explains what causes this disease and how it is treated.
Hypothyroidism usually caused by one of two diseases: lymphocytic thyroiditis or idiopathic thyroid gland atrophy. The first disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism and is thought to be an immune-mediated disease. This means that the immune system decides that the thyroid is abnormal or foreign and attacks it. It is not known why the immune system does this.
Hypothyroidism is treatable but not curable. It is treated with oral administration of a thyroid replacement hormone. This drug must be given for the rest of the dog's life.
Signs of hypo-thyroid problems in your pet:
  • Weight gain
    Lethargy
    Cold intolerance
    Dry coat with excessive shedding

OSA and Hypothyroid
Follow Ups Post Followup Apnea Forum55 FAQ Posted by DebR on March 17, 2001 at 17:17:10: I have OSA and hypothyroid. I was diagnosed w/thyroid problem about 10 years ago and take hormone replacement. I have recently been diagnosed with OSA and have been using CPAP for about 4 weeks. I have no problem sleeping w/CPAP but I still don't feel any better. I finally convinced my primary to re-test my thyroid (have asked several times in the last 3 months always got the same answeryou thyroid level doesnt need to be checked)and my medication needed to be increased. Is there a link between the two disorders? I have an appt. w/sleep DR. on Tues and I want to be prepared to drill him. If anyone has any info I would really appreciate it.

Exercise to Help Hypothyroid Patients Get Fit and Lose Weight

by Mary Shomon

(Note: As always, talk to your healthcare provider before embarking on a new exercise program).
If you're a thyroid patient who is trying to lose weight, eventually you are going to discover one of the most important issues of all the absolute need for exercise. For most people with a thyroid condition, the combination of a slowed metabolism, a higher susceptbility to simple carbohydrates (like sugar, white flour, and white rice products), and increased insulin resistance, make weight loss difficult. Sometimes it seems nearly impossible.
But as someone who is hypothyroid, and who is still facing my own weight loss challenge, the one thing I can tell you that is absolutely essential is exercise. You may say that you don't have time, or energy to exercise, or you can't afford to join a gym. No more excuses!!
You need about 40 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week, and you don't need any special equipment, except for a pair of walking shoes or sneakers, and a watch or stopwatch.

I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. When I went out on the Web, I noticed that though there's a lot of information out there on the disorder, much of it is in the form of journal articles and studies, things that may not even be relevant to the average person who is hypothyroid and just wants to know more about the disease. So, I decided to make a page devoted to the best of the sites I've found, and to sharing my personal experiences in hopes that perhaps, other people will not feel quite so alone. Please note, I am not a medical professional. I'm merely a well-informed person with an interest in sharing what I know. I don't have any insights on what particular test results mean, or recommendations for doctors.

Date: at 02:51 PM My gyn picked up elevated tsh levels on me about a year ago and referred me to an endocrinologist, warning me that "this is something your herbs won't help you with!!" Needless to say, I put together a formula and by the time I got to see the endo, my tsh levels were normal. I go to see him every few months and they have been normal with the exception of a few months when I discontinued the herbs. I don't know if this is something I'll have to take for the rest of my life, but it sure beats synthroid! All Messages By Date By Author Home

Date: at 10:17 AM there is a reasonably good chance that classical acupuncture and chinese herbal medicine can help you a lot. your challenges will be as follows: 1. it will take time and patience 2. you need to find a good and well trained practitioner who communicates with you well 3. you will need to manage an interactive and cooperative relationship between your east asian medical practitioner and your western physician as there will be a process over time of monitoring blood levels and making responsible adjustments. This can only be done in an atmosphere where all of your medical support people understand each other and put your wishes and goals above their personal attachments to their own professions. In my experience in the Canadian context, that is, by far, your biggest challenge. good luck Daniel All Messages By Date By Author Home

http://www.petdiabetes.org/hypothyroid.htm
Hypothyroidism and Diabetes What is it? Signs Diagnosis Treatment ... References What is Hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine disorder in dogs. Dogs diagnosed with hypothyroidism are usually between 4 and 10 years old. Since both hypothyroidism and diabetes is common in older dogs, it is not unusual to have both a diabetic and hypothyroid dog. Hypothyroidism is rare in cats and is usually the result of a thyroidectomy performed to treat hyperthyroidism . The information presented here is for dogs.
Causes
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland, a small double-lobed gland in the neck, produces abnormally low levels of thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland produces two hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodithyronine (T3).
Hypothyroidism is most commonly due to destruction of the thyroid gland either from an immune-mediated process where lymphocytes of the immune system cause inflammation of the thyroid (lymphocytic thyroiditis), or atrophy.
Less commonly, hypothyroidism can be due to cancer of the thyroid gland. It can also be due to dysfunction of the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland secretes thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) which in turn causes the thyroid to produce thyroid hormone. Other illnesses, glucocorticoids, and malnutrition can also cause decreased TSH levels, which would lead to hypothyroidism.
