T he Institute of Research was established to reflect the NKF's strong commitment to research and continuing education in the areas of disease prevention, dialysis outcomes and therapeutic trials, quality of life assessment, and the genetic basis of kidney disease. Clinical Research in Dialysis 1999 saw us carrying out our first research projects. Currently the Clinical Services and Research Divisions are conducting clinical research on kidney disease patterns and existing treatment methods to enhance and improve our treatment and rehabilitation programmes. In addition, a study on the impact of genetics on kidney disease is being undertaken. Establishing the Khoo Oon Teik Professorship On July 10, 1999, the NKF took a major step forward in the search for better treatment and prevention strategies for chronic kidney failure by establishing the Khoo Oon Teik Professorship in Nephrology at the National University of Singapore. Launched by former President Ong Teng Cheong and Vice-Chancellor of the NUS, Professor Lim Pin, it also marked the pioneering contributions of the NKF founder, Dr Khoo Oon Teik, a prolific author and co-author of over 100 research papers in the arena of nephrology.

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) Nephropathy
What is IgA nephropathy?
IgA nephropathy is a chronic kidney disease that may progress over a period of 10 to 20 years, and can lead to end-stage renal disease. It is caused by deposits of the protein immunoglobulin A (IgA) inside the glomeruli (filters) within the kidney. These glomeruli normally filter waste and excess water from the blood and send them to the bladder as urine. However, the IgA protein prevents this filtering process. This may lead to the following:
  • blood and protein in the urine

IgA Nephropathy
IgA nephropathy is the most common primary kidney disease that can result in kidney failure. We are one of the leaders in research into the molecular mechanisms involved in this condition, focusing on interactions between the IgA molecule and kidney cells. Basic and clinical research topics : Abnormality of IgA molecules in IgAN Interaction between IgA and kidney cells Key investigators : Prof KN Lai, Mr JCK Leung Representative publications Lai KN, Chan LYY, Tang SC, Tsang AWL, Guo H, Tse KC, Yip T, Leung JCK..
