Proliant Webserver CCHIPS/IDL Enables Detailed MRI Analysis Biomedical engineers in the Imaging Research Center at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio have used IDL® , Research Systems' Interactive Data Language, to develop a software application called CCHIPS/IDL - Cincinnati Children's Hospital Processing Software/Interactive Data Language. Considering the results from T2 magnetic resonance imaging analysis produced using the program, doctors are able to evaluate the effect of therapy, and the effect of disease, in children who show signs of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). "On July 3rd, 1977, an event took place that would forever alter the landscape of modern medicine." From How Magnetic Resonance Imaging Works by Todd A. Gould, RT-(R) (MR) (ARRT) That event was the first MRI scan ever performed on a human being. Dr. Raymond Damadian, Dr. Larry Minkoff and Dr. Micheal Goldsmith had worked for more than seven years to develop the machine that had just taken more than five hours to produce the image. Dr. Bernard "Bernie" Dardzinski, Ph.D. relies on IDL to implement new features as the research progresses. "If I have an idea for something that will enhance the application, I just go to Vince and he can add it easily," Dr. Dardzinski says. "Vince" is Dr. Vince Schmithorst, Ph.D. Also a biomedical engineer, he collaborates with Dardzinski to continue refining CCHIPS/IDL.

What Is Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Arthritis is usually associated with adults. But as many as 100,000 children in the United States live with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. JRA is defined as a chronic condition causing joint inflammation for at least 6 weeks in a child 16 years of age or younger. In most cases it's not a lifelong disorder, and the symptoms fade after several months or years.
Still, JRA can be a complicated condition. The main reason is that it's actually an umbrella term for a group of conditions. The conditions are classified according to the number of joints affected, symptoms and the presence or absence of certain antibodies in the blood. The main categories of JRA are:
  • Pauciarticular JRA , which affects four or fewer joints. Typically, it affects larger joints, such as the knees. Children with this form of JRA sometimes develop eye inflammation.
  • Polyarticular JRA, which affects many joints. Small joints, such as those in the hands and feet, are most commonly affected.
  • Systemic JRA

B bursas - fluid-filled sacs between bones and ligaments, or other adjacent structures. bursitis - inflammation of the bursas. C cartilage - a connective tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. computed tomography scan (Also called a CT or CAT scan.) - a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of x-rays and computer technology to produce cross-sectional images (often called slices), both horizontally and vertically, of the body. A CT scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat, and organs. CT scans are more detailed than general x-rays. D dermatomyositis - a type of rheumatic disease in which the blood vessels under the skin and muscles are inflamed, causing damage to the muscle tissue.

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
What is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis?
Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is a form of arthritis in children ages 16 or younger that causes inflammation and stiffness of joints for more than six weeks. Unlike adult rheumatoid arthritis, which is chronic and lasts a lifetime, children often outgrow juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. However, the disease can affect bone development in the growing child. The disease can be classified into three categories based on the number of and which joints are involved, the symptoms present and their duration, and the presence of specific antibodies produced by the immune system. These three variables often help physicians determine the progression of JRA and include the following:
  • pauciarticular This is a common form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, involving four or less joints. Large joints, such as the knees, are typically affected. This type of disease most often affects girls younger than 8 years old. polyarticular One-third to one-half of children with JRA are affected by this type of the disease, which affects five or more joints. Polyarticular disease is more serious and tends to affect the small joints, such as the hands and feet, and often on both sides of the body.

Description Arthritis, Juvenile Rheumatoid : Rheumatoid arthritis of children occurring in three major subtypes defined by the symptoms present during the first six months following onset: systemic-onset (Still's Disease, Juvenile-Onset) polyarticular-onset, and pauciarticular-onset. Adult-onset cases of Still's disease (STILL'S DISEASE, ADULT-ONSET) are also known. Only one subtype of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (polyarticular-onset, rheumatoid factor-positive) clinically resembles adult rheumatoid arthritis and is considered its childhood equivalent. [1] Tumor Necrosis Factor : Serum glycoprotein produced by activated macrophages and other mammalian mononuclear leukocytes which has necrotizing activity against tumor cell lines and increases ability to reject tumor transplants. It mimics the action of endotoxin but differs from it. It has a molecular weight of less than 70,000 kDa. [1]
