More than 20 million Americans have chronic kidney disease, and millions more are at risk. Washington, DC has the highest prevalence of kidney disease in the nation with more than 4,800 patients on dialysis and 1,650 waiting for a kidney transplant.
March is National Kidney Month and the NKF/NCA urges all Americans, especially those at risk, to get tested for this deadly disease. Warning signs:
  • Unusual puffiness around the eyes
  • Swelling in the ankles
  • Lower back pain
  • Increased and/or painful urination
Individuals in high-risk groups include:
  • Diabetics or those with a family history of diabetes
  • Individuals with high blood pressure or a family history of high blood pressure
  • Individuals with a family history of chronic kidney disease
  • African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, and Native Americans

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
What is polycystic kidney disease?
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited disease that affects the kidneys. Sacs of fluid (called cysts) grow in the kidneys. If too many cysts grow or if they get too big, the kidneys become damaged. The cysts may also cause pain or may get infected. PKD is the most common inherited disease in the United States. Children of parents with PKD have a 50% chance of getting the disease.
How will PKD affect me?
Most people with PKD can lead a normal life. In many people, the disease is mild and causes only minor problems. PKD is more severe in some patients and can cause kidney failure. About 60% of patients develop high blood pressure, which can be treated with blood pressure medicine. About 50% of patients with PKD have kidney failure by age 60. Dialysis (blood filtering) and kidney transplants are both effective treatments for kidney failure. PKD is generally worse in men, blacks and patients with sickle cell disease. There is also a childhood form of PKD which is usually more severe than the type that occurs in adults.
What other organs can be hurt by PKD?

http://www.palmcoastimaging.com/Services/s_ultrasoundsegmentaldoplar.htm
Ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging modality based on transmitting ultra high frequency sound waves into the body and then receiving the returning echoes. Ultrasound has evolved from SONAR. It has been in clinical practice since the 1950s and now is one of the most important modalities and diagnostic imaging. The technology originally was developed to detect objects in water. SONAR was used to detect submarines. SONAR is responsible for the "pinging" one hears on a submarine. Shortly after the close of World War II, researchers began to explore medical diagnostic capabilities of ultrasound. Initially, the ultrasound equipment recorded blips on an oscilloscope. Subsequently, refinements allowed for today's gray scale imaging. Doppler technology was incorporated to detect moving structures such as blood within the body. 3D imaging with ultrasound is now possible and in use today. Sound is produced over a wide range of frequencies. The human ear only detects sound within a certain frequency range. Dog's ears can detect higher frequency sounds, hence the dog whistle humans cannot hear. In order to detect fine structures within the body, very high frequency sound waves must be used. The frequencies in today's ultrasound machine range from 2 Megahertz to 15 Megahertz. Megahertz denotes a million waves per second. The sound is concentrated into a thin beam and directed into the patient by a hand held transducer. That same transducer also acts as a receiver. The sound waves enter the body and bounce off internal structures. The returning echoes are recorded and processed by a computer and converted into an image.

Polycystic Kidney Disease
Polycystic Kidney Disease: Characterized by multiple, bilateral, grape-like clusters of fluid filled cysts that grossly enlarge the kidneys, compressing and eventually replacing functioning renal tissue. This disorder is inherited. It appears in two distinct forms. The infantile form causes stillbirth or early neonatal death. Infants with this disease may survive for 2 years and then develop fatal renal, congestive heart, or respiratory failure. Onset of the adult form is insidious but commonly becomes obvious between ages 30 and 50. Rarely, polycystic kidney disease doesn't cause symptoms during an individual's life-time, and may only be found during autopsy. Renal deterioration in the adult form of this disorder is slower than in the infantile form, but often leads to renal failure. Cause: The infantile form appears to be inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. The adult form appears to be autosomal dominant trait. Symptoms: Infantile:
Pronounced epicanthal folds (a vertical fold of skin on either side of the nose)
Pointed nose
Small chin
Floppy, low set ears

POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE The overall incidence of polycystic kidney disease in the pediatric population is unknown. Autopsy series have identified polycystic kidneys in 1.3 - 5.9/1000 pediatric patients. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is far more common than the recessive form. The incidence of the dominant condition in patients of all ages has been estimated from autopsy studies at 1/220 to 1/1100. As anticipated with autosomal inheritance, the male:female ratio of both disorders is approximately 1:1. Patients with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease usually follow one of two different clinical courses, suggesting variable expression among affected individuals. The disease most often presents in the neonatal period, frequently after a pregnancy remarkable for oligohydramnios. The newborn may have physical manifestations of the Potter syndrome and massively enlarged, poorly functioning kidneys. Neonatal death due to pulmonary hypoplasia occurs in 84% of children with recessive polycystic kidney disease. However, a small number of affected patients follow a milder clinical course. In these children, the diagnosis may be made when enlarged kidneys are palpated at birth or in infancy. Hepatosplenomegaly may also be noted.

What is Elixir of life?
In Brief.... W
henever we attempt to determine whether life as we know it exists on Mars or on other planets, scientists first seek to establish if water is present. Why? Because life on Earth totally depends on water. Even seventy to ninety percent of all organic matter is composed of water. So water is the essence of life. The human body can manage to survive without food for well over one month, but without water we can only survive for a few days. At least eight glasses of water a day should be consumed and we are not talking about tea, coffee, sodas, colas, and alcoholic drinks, which are highly acidic and all strong diuretics. Muncipal water today is a best of a bad job. Increasing pollutants force the authorities to add chlorine and othe purifiying agents in the water thereby decreasing the nutrient supply through it which is much needed for the human body today. Here are some more alarming facts:
The answer to this is plain and simple and lies in the very essence of life and that is
Alkaline Ion Water !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cystic kidney disease describes several conditions in which fluid-filled cysts form in the kidneys. Cysts generally develop in weak segments of the tubules that carry urine from the glomeruli. The cyst's growth displaces healthy kidney tissue. The kidneys expand to accommodate the cyst, which can weigh as much as 20 pounds. Three factors determine cyst classification: its cause (acquired, inherited), its features (complicated, simple, multiple, single), and its location (outer [cortical] or inner [medullary] kidney tissue).

Even though very few people have heard of it, Polycystic Kidney Disease affects 600,000 people in the U.S. alone, and 12.5 million world wide. There are more people with PKD than cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, hemophilia, Downs syndrome and sickle cell anemia combined. Many PKD patients find it useful to have access to the same information as their doctors because many doctors are unfortunately pretty unfamiliar with the disease. I will try to bring you as much information and sources about the disease as possible. If you have any questions about PKD for any reason, or if you know of anyone who has the disease and is looking for more information or for support groups I encourage you to contact any of the sources I have listed here, or to ask me a question . I would also appreciate an email if you have any pertinent information I should add to this page. PKD has been a profound part of my life so far, and will only continue to become more so. Likewise, the information on this page is just the beginning, and will continue to grow as time and research allows. If there is just one person out there that this page might help, I will be grateful for having the opportunity to make a difference.
