There are a variety of causes of liver disorders. The most common is hepatitis (inflammation of the liver). There are a number of infectious causes of hepatitis, of which the most important are the hepatitis viruses. In South Africa, three viruses are very significant causes of hepatitis. These viruses are (not very originally!) named hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. In fact these three viruses are completely unrelated to one another, but they all happen to target the liver during an infection. Another common liver disorder is cirrhosis which is commonly caused by excessive alcohol intake, since alcohol is a liver toxin. Many medications, including herbal medicines, are also toxic for the liver. People with liver disorders need to pay special attention to diet in order for the liver to function optimally. Step 2: Adopting healthy habits
To prevent liver disorders:
  • Avoid infection by hepatitis Get immunised against hepatitis A and B (no vaccine for hepatitis C has been developed yet) Maintain good sanitation Always practise safer sex Do not drink alcohol excessively
Step 3: Understanding the basic dietary principles to aid liver disorders
Always avoid all alcohol to spare your liver and cut down drastically on fatty foods. Take a complete vitamin and mineral supplement like Centrum or Supradyn, plus Essentiale or Prohep or Guronsan.

Abstract:
Directed probabilistic graphs, such as Bayesian networks, are useful tools for coherent representation of and reasoning with uncertain knowledge. They are based on the sound foundations of probability theory and they readily combine available statistics with expert judgment. When extended with decision options and measures of desirability of outcomes (utilities), they support decision making. This paper describes our work in progress on a probabilistic causal model for diagnosis of liver disorders that we plan to apply in both clinical practice and medical training. The model, and especially its numerical parameters, is based on patient records at the Gastroenterological Clinic of the Institute of Food and Feeding in Warsaw, collected over the period of several years. We present the model and report initial results of our diagnostic performance tests. Keywords: Causal models, Bayesian networks, medical diagnosis.

Digestive and liver disorders can have significant effects on the health of a child. A healthy digestive system processes the foods and liquids that we eat, replenishing vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that are vital for the body to function properly. Occasional vomiting or diarrhea may lead to dehydration, however, long-term problems with the digestive system and/or liver can deplete these important nutrients, causing malnutrition that affects a child's physical and mental growth and development. Some digestive disorders, such as vomiting or diarrhea, may be effectively treated by your child's physician. Other times, your child's physician may refer you to a physician who specializes in children's digestive and liver disorders. This specialist is known as a Pediatric Gastroenterologist.

Other Liver Disorders What are autoimmune liver disorders?
An autoimmune disorder is any reaction or attack of a person's immune system against its own organs and tissues. In the liver, the immune system can destroy liver cells and damage bile ducts. Chronic active hepatitis can be caused by an autoimmune disorder. What are metabolic liver disorders?
Two main metabolic disorders affect the liver:
  • hemochromatosis (Also called iron overload disease.) - characterized by the absorption of too much iron from food. Instead of secreting the excess iron, the iron is stored throughout the body, including the liver and pancreas. The excess iron can damage these organs. Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease that can lead to liver disease, liver failure, liver cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Wilson's disease - characterized by the retention of too much copper in the liver. Instead of releasing the copper into the bile, the liver retains the copper. Eventually, the damaged liver releases copper into the bloodstream. This hereditary disease can cause damage to the kidneys, brain, and eyes, and can lead to severe brain damage, liver failure, and death.

Dear JAnet,
Amanda is correct that the gall bladder is on the right side and does not usually cause left abdominal pain. Moreover, you had an ultrasound stusy that I assume showed that the gall bladder was normal. The issue for your doctors is to define the cause for the elevated liver tests. A 30 lb weight loss is quite substantial. If you were overwieght previously, then this weight loss is good. If however, you were previously average weight, then this is another problem requiring evaluation. I would suggest that you discuss with your physicians the possibility of focusing on the liver problem. Anelevated anti mitochondrial antibody (if appropriate titer) can indicate the future development of primary biliary cirrhosis. This information is presented for educational purposes only. Always consult your personal physician for specific medical questions.

Question Posted By: kt on Thursday, July 30, 1998
Dear Doctor:
My husband just received lab results back from doctor and he indicated the liver function test showed an "irritation". My husband drinks approx 2 liters of wine every sat nite and a few glasses of wine every nite during the week. Could this amount account for the liver function test, and can this amount of wine damage one's liver? He has to wait 2 weeks to go back (without drinking) to be retested and I can't sleep nites worrying that perhaps this can be something worse, like hepatitis. Of course after this scare he will never drink again, but the thought of the possibility of hepatitis is going to make this an unbearable wait. We have young children and worry they will be infected. Thank you for your time and any infor you might be able to give
gratefully, kt

FAISALABAD: Bad eating habits cause stomach, liver disorders
By Our Staff Correspondent

FAISALABAD, Dec 30: The city and its surrounding areas are in the grip of stomach and liver diseases due to the negligence of government agencies and improper eating habits.
This was stated by physicians and specialists while speaking at a seminar on 'Hapatobiliary diseases and Gastro-enterology' organized by practising doctors forum 'Healing Hands' here on Monday.
They said it was imperative for the practitioners to educate their patients about basic principles of hygiene, food dietary habits and preventive inoculation against hepatitis.
Prof Dr Irshad Haq said the family physicians and general practitioners should create awareness among their patients to adopt healthy living practices. Patients, he said, should be briefed about early symptoms of common stomach and liver diseases to minimize the incidence of such diseases.
Improper eating habits, heavy use of fats, species and chilies in food and impure drinking water were some of the major causes of common stomach and liver diseases, including the killer hepatitis diseases, he said.

Diagnostic Procedures for Digestive and Liver Problems
To reach a diagnosis for digestive and liver problems, a thorough and accurate medical history must be taken by the physician, noting the symptoms your child has experienced and any other pertinent information. A physical examination is also done to help assess the problem more completely. Some patients need to undergo a more extensive diagnostic evaluation, which may include laboratory tests, imaging tests, or endoscopic procedures. These tests may include any, or all, of the following: Laboratory tests:
  • albumin level
A sample of blood is obtained from your child's vein. Below-normal levels of albumin, a protein made by the liver, found in the bloodstream are associated with many chronic liver disorders.
  • bilirubin level
A sample of blood is taken from your child's vein. Bilirubin is produced by the liver and is excreted in the bile. Elevated levels of bilirubin may indicate an obstruction of bile flow or a defect in the processing of bile by the liver.
  • complete blood count (CBC)
A sample of blood is taken from your child's finger or vein, and the different types of cells in the bloodstream are examined. White blood cells multiply when infection is present. Red blood cells will be present in smaller amounts than normal if blood has been lost, if the diet has been inadequate, or with certain diseases.
