Digestive and liver disorders. What is digestion? Food and drink mustbe changed into smaller molecules of nutrients to be absorbed
http://www.southeastmissourihospital.com/health/kids/hrpreg~1/digest.htm
Digestive and Liver Disorders What is digestion?
Food and drink must be changed into smaller molecules of nutrients to be absorbed into the blood and carried to cells throughout the body. Digestion is the process by which food and drink are broken down into smaller parts so that the body can use them to build and nourish cells, and to provide energy. How does the digestive process work?
Digestion involves:
  • the mixing of food. the movement of food through the digestive tract. a chemical breakdown of large molecules of food into smaller molecules.
Digestion begins in the mouth, where food and drink is taken in, and is completed in the small intestine. What is included in the digestive system?
The digestive tract is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus, consisting of the following:
  • mouth esophagus stomach small intestine large intestine rectum anus
Organs that help with digestion, but are not part of the digestive tract, include the following:

Simple Blood Tests Help Diagnose Liver Disorders
ROCHESTER, MINN. Your doctor’s office calls. The results of a routine blood test indicate a potential problem with your liver — even though you are feeling fine. An abnormal blood test can be the first indication of a minor or a serious problem with your liver, according to the May issue of Mayo Clinic Health Letter. The liver acts as the body’s chemical factory by regulating blood composition, making vital nutrients and neutralizing toxic substances. If your liver isn’t able to carry out these functions, your health is jeopardized. Mild liver test abnormalities are common and many never develop into serious liver disease. But significantly abnormal test results shouldn’t be ignored. Your doctor will likely recommend additional blood tests to determine any liver damage and a treatment plan. There are many liver disorders. Some of the more common ones that can be detected with the help of blood tests are: ** Viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver caused by a virus. There are three kinds of hepatitis A, B and C. Hepatitis C is a growing concern worldwide. It’s spread through contact with contaminated blood and is the leading reason for liver transplants. ** Excessive and chronic use of alcohol and use of certain medications.

Appendix A. Five Medical Datasets
A.1 BUPA Liver Disorders
The BUPA Liver Disorders dataset was created by BUPA Medical Research Ltd. and it was donated to the Irvine collection by Richard Forsyth. Table 15 shows the test costs for the BUPA Liver Disorders dataset. The tests in group A are blood tests that are thought to be sensitive to liver disorders that might arise from excessive alcohol consumption. These tests share the common cost of $2.10 for collecting blood. The target concept was defined using the sixth column: Class was defined as "drinks < 3" and class 1 was defined as "drinks 3". Table 16 shows the general form of the classification cost matrix that was used in the experiments in Section 4 . For most of the experiments, the classification error cost equals the positive error cost equals the negative error cost. The exception is in Section 4.2.3 , for the experiments with complex classification cost matrices. The terms "positive error cost" and "negative error cost" are explained in Section 4.2.3

Medical Director The Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation is a multidisciplinary treatment center offering the seamless integration of medical, surgical and radiologic expertise in caring for patients with liver disease. Clinical innovation and scientific progress are at the core of the Center's mission to treat and cure of disorders of the liver and biliary system in adults and children. The Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation is one of the first liver programs built from the inception as a multidisciplinary unit. This means that our patients benefit from the close collaboration of the hepatologists, gastroenterologists, hepatobiliary surgeons, diagnostic and pathology experts, advanced-care nurses, social workers, and patient support staff affiliated with the program. The Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation offers all levels of service, from ambulatory care to transplantation, for patients suffering from all forms of liver disease. The Center is committed to caring for all patients, regardless of financial status, and participates with many insurance plans. Regional and national healthcare insurers recognize the Center both for its clinical excellence and it cost effective care. While NewYork-Presbyterian's contracting professionals continually expand the roster of participating health insurance plans, the Center's financial counselor works directly with patients and their families to negotiate coverage with their insurers, or develop out-of-network case rates as needed.
