Medical Treatment: Corticosteroids are a commonly used drug to help reduce the swelling that can often be caused by brain metastases. This can have a dramatic effect on getting rid of some or all of the signs and symptoms . However, this effect is usually short-lived; without further treatment it cannot cause the tumor to stop growing.
Well-known side effects of corticosteroid treatment include:
Weakness in the upper thigh region Weight gain Retention of fluid Blood sugar control problems Sleep disturbance Gastritis (irritation of the lining of the stomach) Acne breakouts Mood swings Immunosuppression (a condition where the immune system has a decreased ability to fight against infections) There is also an increased risk of developing specific types

exerpts from - A CALL FOR PARSIMONY IN SPIDER BITE DIAGNOSES
by:
Richard S. Vetter and P. Kirk Visscher
Department of Entomology, University of California, Riverside, CA 92521 USA click here to review full report Although some spiders listed in the report can have deleterious effects, not all bites lead to serious symptoms, and most may in fact be unremarkable. Typically, spiders bite only in defense, only once, and the bite is rarely felt. Multiple "bites" or an initially painful bite would exonerate most spiders as probable culprits. There are many arthropods which actively seek to bite humans, and these seem more logical candidates for suspicion 115. In one study of 600 suspected "spider bite cases" in southern California, 80% were caused by other arthropods, mostly ticks and reduviid bugs 115,116. Loxosceles spiders have been erroneously blamed for a variety of necrotic wounds of unknown origin, which have often turned out to have other etiological agents (Table 1). It has been estimated that 60% of "alleged brown recluse bites" occur in areas where no Loxosceles spiders are known to exist 116. There are many causative agents of necrotic wounds, many not arthropod in nature, which can be or have been confused for recluse spider bites 74,116,118-120. A call for greater parsimony in spider bite diagnoses has been made more than once 74,88,116,117,121 and excellent guidelines for "verified", "probable" and "possible" spider bite diagnoses have been put forth118. Table 1. Conditions which can cause necrotic wounds, have been misdiagnosed as or could be confused with "brown recluse spider bite" (from 73,115-117,120)

TRIMZOL TABLETS
COMPOSITION:
Each TRIMZOL tablet contains Sulphamethoxazole 400 mg and Trimethoprim 80 mg.
PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION:
A 20.2.1. Sulphonamides. PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION: Co-trimoxazole is a bactericidal chemotherapeutic agent. Its antimicrobial activity results from the sequential blockage of two enzymes intervening in the biosynthesis of tetrahydrofolic acid in the microorganism. Its antibacterial activity in vitro covers a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms such as Strep. pneumoniae, C. diphtheria and N. meningitidis. Some strains of Staph. aureus, Staph. epidermis, Strep. pyogenes, the viridans group of streptococci, Stre. faecalis, E. coli, Pr. mirabilis, Pr. morganii, Pr. rettgeri, Enterobacter species, Salmonella, Shigella, Pseud. Pseudomallei, Serratia and Alcaligenes species are inhibited in vitro. Also in vitro are Klebsiella species, Brucella abortus, Pasteurella haemolytica, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, Y. enterocolitica and Nocardia asteroides. Very few strains of Pseud. aeruginosa are sensitive. Methicillin resistant strains of Staph. aureus are usually susceptible to the combination. INDICATIONS: Infections due to susceptible organisms such as: Respiratory tract infections: Acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchiactasis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, acute otitis and acute maxillary sinusitis.

ACUCO TABLETS
COMPOSITION:
Each tablet contains:
Trimethoprim 80 mg Sulphamethoxazole 400 mg Preservative:
Nipastat 0,025% m/m PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION: A 20.2 Antimicrobial agents other than antibiotics. PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION: ACUCO is a combination of trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole and results in synergistic effects causing a bactericidal action (in vitro). The action of cotrimoxazole is achieved by the sequential blocking of two enzymes essential in folinic acid synthesis in the organism. INDICATIONS: The treatment of infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract, the urinary tract and the alimentary and genital tract in both sexes, and skin infections caused by sensitive organisms. CONTRA-INDICATIONS: ACUCO is contra-indicated in patients with known sulphonamide or trimethoprim hypersensitivity or who are suffering from porphyria. It should not be used in patients suffering from liver parenchymal damage, or a severe renal insufficiency. Co-trimoxazole should not be used during pregnancy and lactation. Use of the substance in premature or new-born infants during the first two months of life, is contra-indicated.

Hope for Rwanda: Conversations With Laure Guilbert and Herv Deguine > Customer Review #1: A Voice of Reason
Andre Sibomana was a phenomenal human being. The son of a wood sculpturer from Masango in the Gitarama prefecture, he rose to become one of the most prominent figures in Rwanda. As the priest of Muyunzwe from 1982-86, his parishiners called him "the wild animal," which translates more precisely from Kinyarwandan as "the wild animal which does not devour, does not crush the crops and does not do harm"(p. 16). Sibomana lived by the principle of human dignity. So when suspect perpetrators of the genocide were (and continue to be) rotting, literally, en masse in prisons established by the RPF since July, 1994, he spoke out, and then followed word with action by providing aid and improving the revolting living conditions. So too did he speak out of RPF reprisal killings. But his voice, once again, fell on oftentimes deft ears in the international community.

http://www.aegis.com/law/journals/1993/HKFNE009.html
Needle Exchange: A Brief History A Publication from The Kaiser Forums; Sponsored by The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation
Sandra D. Lane, R.N., Ph.D., M.P.H., Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, Case Western Reserve University. Cleveland, Ohio, and the Needle Exchange Program Evaluation Project* Edited by: Jeff Stryker, Center for AIDS Prevention Studies University of California- San Francisco; Mark Smith, M.D., M.B.A. Needle exchange programs emerged as a way to address rapidly increasing rates of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other infections among injection drug users. In many parts of the United States, such programs have been illegal, often unwelcome in the very communities hardest hit by injection drug use, and opposed by leaders in public health and drug treatment. The social history of how and why these programs developed not only provides a context for evaluating the public health costs and benefits of needle exchange but also illustrates the interaction of public health officials, community and activist groups, the legal system, and the government in establishing health policy regarding this very controversial issue. *In addition to Sandra Lane, members of the Needle Exchange Program Evaluation Project include Benjamin Bowser, Ph.D.; Donna Chen, M.P.H.; Pamela DeCarlo, B.A.; Joseph Guydish, Ph.D., M.P.H.; T. Stephen Jones, M.D.; James G. Kahn, M.D., M.P.H.; Philip R. Lee, M.D.; Peter Lurie, M.D., M.P.H.; Arthur L. Reingold, M.D.; and James Sorenson, Ph.D.
