-in-Training. This is an operation working for the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society of America. I have joined in an effort to raise
money for a very worthy organization. In my effort, I will be both
raising funds and walking a 26.2 mile marathon in honor of a special
TEAMmate. This page will be to chronicle both of those efforts, as
well as providing links for more information on this organization
and the disease, as well as the lives touched by this devastating
illness. My personal goal started as an effort to improve myself,
and if in the process of doing that I can make a difference in the
world, and in the lives of the people and their families afflicted by this terrible tragedy then I will be honored! Please take this dove and place it on your site!

Dedicated to the memory of Jeffrey Alan Martin, who died 11 June 1999 at the age of 32 after a 5 month battle with Burkitt's Lymphoma This site aims to provide resources on Burkitt's Lymphoma, a very rare form of cancer with about only 100 new cases a year in the United States. Burkitt's Lymphoma, rare in most of the world, is the most common childhood cancer in Central Africa, and is one of the most aggressive of all human cancers. Burkitt's lymphoma is one type of a group of malignant diseases know as the Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas (NHL). These lymphomas are very similar to the leukemias. The type of malignant cell present is called a B-cell and Burkitt's is often referred to as a B-cell lymphoma or leukemia. As with other cancers, the exact cause is not known. Burkitt's is the most common in children in Africa and there is some evidence linking its cause there to a virus known as the Epstein-Barr virus. Outside of Africa, chromosomal defects in some of the patient's cells may be the cause. Children still seem to be the most affected, but there are cases of adults with Burkitt's. This malignancy grows very rapidly and a person who appeared in good health a month or 6 weeks ago may now be critically ill.

June 20th - 3rd Anniversary of David's passing - Forever in our hearts... Forever on our minds Welcome to our Memorial home page dedicated to our son and brother David. We are the Schneider family, living in Southern Ontario, Canada. Let us introduce ourselves. Joyce Schneider is a high school teacher of Drama and Performing Arts. Her spouse, Michael, is a teacher in the same school, head of the same department, and teaches English as well as Drama and Performing Arts. As you can see, we have absolutely nothing in common! Our beautiful daughter, Mary, is 16 years old. She is an accomplished dancer and baseball player, loves acting and singing, and is now finishing grade 11 at her mom and dad's school, and loves it. Our boy David passed away on June 20th 1998 after a long and struggle with non-Hodgkin’s’ lymphoma at the age of 11. This Web sight was intended in part to be a celebration of his life and we are grateful that he was able to participate in its creation. It is our David who greets you when you click on the " Cat Gallery " link, along with his beloved Butterscotch; it was recorded just 4 days prior to his passing. General Information
Note: Separate summaries on AIDS-Related Lymphoma Treatment Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma Treatment ; and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma During Pregnancy Treatment are available. Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs) are a heterogeneous group of lymphoproliferative malignancies with differing patterns of behavior and responses to treatment. [ Like Hodgkin's lymphoma, NHL usually originates in lymphoid tissues and can spread to other organs. However, NHL is much less predictable than Hodgkin's lymphoma and has a far greater predilection to disseminate to extranodal sites. The prognosis depends on the histologic type, stage, and treatment. The NHLs can be divided into 2 prognostic groups: the indolent lymphomas and the aggressive lymphomas. Indolent NHL types have a relatively good prognosis, with median survival as long as 10 years, but they usually are not curable in advanced clinical stages. Early-stage (I and II) indolent NHL can be effectively treated with radiation therapy alone. Most of the indolent types are nodular (or follicular) in morphology. The aggressive type of NHL has a shorter natural history, but a significant number of these patients can be cured with intensive combination chemotherapy regimens. In general, with modern treatment of patients with NHL, overall survival at 5 years is approximately 50% to 60%. Thirty percent to 60% of patients with aggressive NHL can be cured. The vast majority of relapses occur in the first 2 years after therapy. The risk of late relapse is higher in patients with a divergent histology of both indolent and aggressive disease. [

Welcome to the Elephant Trust For
    Cancer Research

The trust was named The Elephant Trust because my husband John loved Elephants and all that they stood for. Strength, courage, protection of the family, loyalty, gentleness, and all the things that John represented.
John had HIGH-GRADE, STAGE IV ADULT NON-HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMA.He died on Christmas Day 1999 after a mammoth fight lasting two years. He had had several courses of chemotherapy and a Stem Cell Transplant at Christmas 1998 and a Bone marrow transplant at Christmas 1999, with his sister Mary generously donating her bone marrow after searching through all the family members who might have been a match she was found to be the closest. In the end with no immunity, during the process of the bone marrow transplant, he got flu in London's winter flu epidemic of 1999.
He died within about three days of catching it. The Bone Marrow transplant might have worked and it is research into that new type of treatment that we are trying to help. John wanted to try everything that he could to help find a cure, and his attitude was that if it didn't help him, then by going through the treatment the doctors would learn, and it could help someone else. With such a strong and courageous attitude I felt that I wanted to continue his powerful beginnings, and work to help further the knowledge of cancer care and support and eventual cure.
The Lymphoma and Cancer research projects that we are planning to fund are for laboratory research in forwarding the knowledge needed to fight the rejection of donated bone marrow and Stem Cell transplants and detecting very small cancer cells before they become a problem. We also help support cancer patients and their treatment.

    General Information
This treatment information summary on childhood non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is an overview of prognosis, diagnosis, classification, and treatment. The National Cancer Institute created the PDQ database to increase the availability of new treatment information and its use in treating patients. Information and references from the most recently published literature are included after review by pediatric oncology specialists. Cancer in children and adolescents is rare. Children and adolescents with cancer should be referred to medical centers that have a multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists with experience treating the cancers that occur during childhood and adolescence. This multidisciplinary team incorporates the skills of the primary care physician, pediatric surgical subspecialists, radiation oncologists, pediatric medical oncologists/hematologists, rehabilitation specialists, pediatric nurse specialists, social workers, and others in order to ensure that children receive treatment, supportive care, and rehabilitation that will achieve optimal survival and quality of life. Guidelines for pediatric cancer centers and their role in the treatment of children with cancer have been outlined by the American Academy of Pediatrics. [

The lymph system is made up of thin tubes that branch, like blood vessels, into all parts of the body. They carry lymph, a colorless, watery fluid that contains white blood cells called lymphocytes. Along the network of vessels are groups of small bean-shaped organs called lymph nodes. Clusters of lymph nodes are found in the underarm, pelvis, neck and abdomen. Lymph nodes make and store infection-fighting cells. The spleen, thymus and tonsils are also part of the lymph system.

lymphoma by Anita R. Weidinger, DVM. lymphoma, also known as Lymphosarcoma,is a malignant cancer that is affecting our canine companions.
    http://www.adoptagolden.com/k9stuff/vetcorner/lymph.htm
    Lymphoma
by Anita R. Weidinger, D.V.M. Other types of Lymphoma include alimentary, mediastinal, cutaneous and extranodal. During alimentary Lymphoma, which involves the stomach and the intestines, the dog will usually experience vomiting and diarrhea, weight loss and lethargy. Mediastinal Lymphoma causes a growth of cancer in the front part of the chest leading to fluid in the chest and difficulty breathing. Cutaneous Lymphoma affects the skin and is uncommon. Extranodal Lymphoma is a combination of other potential sites in the body that can be affected with this form of cancer. These include the eyes, the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord), bones, heart, kidneys, bladder and the nasal cavity. Any type of cancer carries with it a grave prognosis. Lymphoma can be treated with chemotherapy and is probably the most commonly treated cancer in dogs because the chemotherapy protocols are well established and the chances of a good response to the chemotherapy are favorable. The dreaded statistics are that an untreated dog will most likely die from its disease within four to six weeks. With a combination chemotherapy there is an eighty-four percent chance of remission (making the cancer seem to disappear for a period of time) and the average survival time of the dog when treated is 357 days. The average duration of remission is 252 days.

Other sites are more geared toward telling people with lymphoma about the treatment and other aspects of their disease. Other Resources: Many other sites devoted to hematopathology and general pathology beckon the intrepid voyager. There are also many excellent books about hematological neoplasia. This site contains information that may help physicians and other health professionals understand lymphomas. It is not comprehensive and is likely not to contain information that may be important in treating individual patients. Patients with lymphomas must be cared for by qualified professionals familiar with the relevant clinical histories. Feedback: Please send any comments or suggestions via email If your system can only show 256 colors (8-bit color), a fair number of the photomicrographs will show some degradation. If possible, for best results set your monitor so that it can display High Color (16-bit color) or higher. Systems with at least 1 megabyte of video memory should be able to view High Color at an 800x600 resolution. The value of the text, of course, is independent of your monitor's ability to display colors.
