I was motivated to write "Wall of Fog" because I am a survivor. I believe that my personal experience of becoming blind or severally visually impaired will help someone gain insight in their own particular way. What is the macula?
Imagine that your eye is like a camera. There is a lens and an aperture (an opening) at the front, which both adjust to bring objects into focus on the retina at the back of your eye. The retina is made up of a delicate tissue that is sensitive to light, rather like the film in a camera. The macula is found at the centre of the retina where the incoming rays of light are focused. The macula is very important and is responsible for:
    • what we see straight in front of us the vision needed for detailed activities such as reading and writing, and our ability to appreciate colour.
    What is macular degeneration?
Sometimes the delicate cells of the macula become damaged and stop working. We do not know why this is, although it tends to happen as people get older. This is called age-related macular degeneration. Because macular degeneration is an age-related process it usually involves both eyes, although they may not be affected at the same time. With many people the visual cells simply cease to function, like the colours fading in an old photograph - this is known as 'dry' degeneration. Sometimes there is scarring of the macula caused by leaking blood vessels and this is called disciform maculopathy. Children and young people can also suffer from an inherited form of macular degeneration called macular dystrophy. Sometimes several members of a family will suffer from this, and if this is the case in your family it is very important that you have your eyes checked regularly.

Treatment Options for Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive disease of the eye occurring in people over 55 years old due to the aging process. The macula is the central part of the retina which lines the inner wall of the eye and provides central vision. In AMD, damage to the macula results in loss of central vision and affects a person's ability to read, recognize faces or drive. The peripheral vision is usually spared. Up to 30 million people worldwide have AMD. Up to 200,000 people in the US are diagnosed with AMD each year. It is the leading cause of blindness in older populations in the US. As we live longer and longer, we will see an increase in AMD. AMD is associated with aging, fair skin, light iris color, hypertension, smoking, arteriosclerosis, prolonged exposure to sunlight, and family history of AMD. There are 2 types of AMD: the "dry" form and the "wet" form, based on the absence or the presence of abnormal growth of blood vessels under the retina. Most people with AMD have the dry form. Currently there is no proven treatment for the dry type, but the loss of vision tends to be milder and the disease progression is rather slow.

    http://www.visudyne.com/abouta/
    Overview
Macular degeneration is often related to aging thus the term age-related macular degeneration. It is often abbreviated as AMD or ARMD. Most patients with AMD begin to notice problems sometime after age 50. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of legal blindness among people over age 60 in the Western world. Although 13 million Americans have some form of AMD (either the dry or wet form), abnormalities associated with wet AMD occur in approximately 8.5 million Americans over age 40. The cause of AMD is still unknown; however, researchers are exploring several theories as to how the disease develops. AMD is a challenging disease for both patient and doctor, because there are very few treatment options and no proven preventative therapy. Laser photocoagulation is the one treatment proven to be effective in clinical trials, but only a minority of patients with AMD are good candidates for treatment. Visudyne , a photodynamic therapy or PDT, is a promising treatment that has recently received FDA approval in the United States. The treatment uses light-activated drugs to potentially halt or slow anormal cell growth.
