The disturbing report, Losing ground: Israel, poverty and the Palestinians , examines in detail how Israel's occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip has been the primary cause of the destruction of the Palestinian economy. It calls for full Israeli withdrawal from the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and for international monitors to oversee the process. International Development Secretary Ms Short told a packed meeting in the House of Lords that if there was no speedy action the possibility of a viable Palestinian state would be 'eroded'. 'Most people in the world have agreed that the answer is two states side by side, two states that both people can feel safe in and gain security. 'There would need to be lots of international intervention to make people feel safe. But if we don't move quickly, the possibility of a Palestinian state is being eroded by growing settlements and then we have no solution.

Definition
Malnutrition is the condition that develops when the body does not get the right amount of the vitamins minerals , and other nutrients it needs to maintain healthy tissues and organ function.
Description
Undernutrition Malnutrition occurs in people who are either undernourished or over-nourished. Undernutrition is a consequence of consuming too few essential nutrients or using or excreting them more rapidly than they can be replaced. Infants, young children, and teenagers need additional nutrients. So do women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Nutrient loss can be accelerated by diarrhea , excessive sweating, heavy bleeding (hemorrhage), or kidney failure. Nutrient intake can be restricted by age-related illnesses and conditions, excessive dieting, severe injury, serious illness, a lengthy hospitalization, or substance abuse. The leading cause of death in children in developing countries is protein-energy malnutrition . This type of malnutrition is the result of inadequate intake of calories from proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Children who are already undernourished can suffer from protein-energy malnutrition when rapid growth, infection, or disease increases the need for protein and essential minerals. Overnutrition In the United States, nutritional deficiencies have generally been replaced by dietary imbalances or excesses associated with many of the leading causes of death and disability. Overnutrition results from eating too much, eating too many of the wrong things, not exercising enough, or taking too many vitamins or other dietary replacements.

Malnutrition
Introduction Nutrition is perhaps the most important factor, which affects the health of a person. Malnutrition takes place because of less nutritional content in food. Tribals, because of poor economic conditions and lack of facilities, frequently suffer from malnutrition. A combination of factors makes them vulnerable. Most tribals live in sub-human physical conditions. An average tribal family has seven people living in only two rooms. Their homes do not have enough ventilation. Their pigs, cattle, and hens live within the same house, to ensure the security of their animals. Generally they do not have electricity, sanitary latrines, etc. They use the same source of water for themselves as well as for their cattle, to wash their clothes and vessels. They themselves take bath in that same water, which gets mixed with wells that satisfy the need of drinking water. Moreover, the wells themselves are rarely properly constructed and maintained. Food Lack of nutritious food is another factor. They get green vegetables from their farms, milk from their cows, and other food-grains but they sell it for money and do not use for themselves. Their intake is limited to items such as Kosari, Ambadi, Peas, Bamboo shoots, Banana, Guava, some vegetables if available, Rice, and rarely Meat. This is not sufficient for their daily requirements. Less than 40% have scientifically correct knowledge of proper health care. Neither do they have proper knowledge for growing the vegetables and taking the maximum from whatever products they have.

Definition
Malnutrition is an imbalance or deficiency of nutrients. This can come from not eating enough healthy foods or by using up too many nutrients through activities. Malnutrition can be identified by using body weight, body fat, protein stores and laboratory values.
Information Poor nutrition leads to poor health. The three leading causes of malnutrition are:
  • poverty and lack of food ignorance or indifference disease or substance abuse, such as alcoholism
There are different types of malnutrition. Malnutrition is not only found in poor countries. People in rich countries, like the United States, can have malnutrition, too. The most common type of malnutrition occurs when the body does not get enough protein. This condition is called kwashiorkor. Not getting enough protein affects how children grow and develop. In some countries, just-weaned children are fed watery cereal. This diet provides enough calories but not enough protein. This type of malnutrition can be life threatening because protein helps to build and maintain muscle. Without protein in the diet, muscles such as the heart and respiratory system weaken.

ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS TO MALNUTRITION
www.grain.org/publications/ -en.cfm print version GRAIN Vitamin A or retinol, is present exclusively in animal foods such as liver, milk and eggs. Fruits and vegetables contain provitamin A, such as beta-carotene and other carotenoids, which first need to be converted into retinol before the body can utilise them (see example in the table below). The origins of vitamin A deficiency in childhood can be traced to poor nutrition status of the mother during pregnancy and lactation, and inadequate intake of foods rich in either preformed or provitamin A by the infant after weaning and thereafter. A logical approach then to the prevention of vitamin A deficiency must seek to address these basic causes and not rely on technological fixes. Fortunately, the abundance of natural foods in the South should make such dietary improvements possible. Nalamdana MALNUTRITION
"FOOD FOR THOUGHT"

Malnutrition is a new area of undertaking for Nalamdana and one we hope to focus on for at least the next decade because of its very widespread prevalence (53% of all children under age 5!!!) and shocking consequences . This program, titled "Food for Thought" (sinthanaikku unavu) is an effort to help children in Tamil Nadu begin life with the right nutrition to enable normal cognitive development and immune system functioning. Prenatal and early childhood nutrition (upto age 6) has long been thought to affect ones health and intellectual potential in adulthood. And in fact, the last decade has seen mounting evidence for this theory. While earlier studies have shown significant proof of the importance of nutrition between ages and 6, new studies indicate that the prenatal nutritional environment is equally, if not more, important. This is known today as the theory of fetal programming by nutrition. This means that events during critical or sensitive periods of development may "program" long-term or life-time structure or function of the organism. A. Lucas, an expert in the field, writes
“Humans, like other species, have sensitive windows for nutrition in terms of later outcomes such as neurodevelopment, learning and behavior, metabolism, blood pressure and bone mineralization.… This includes adaptive changes in gene expression, preferential clonal selection of adapted cells in programmed tissues and programmed differential proliferation of tissue cell types. “- J Nutr 1998 Feb;128(2 Suppl):401S-406S

Enriching Lives: Overcoming Vitamin and Mineral Malnutrition in Developing Countries
The following Executive Summary is taken from the World Bank publication Enriching Lives: Overcoming Vitamin and Mineral Malnutrition in Developing Countries Publication information and ordering instructions are available. The control of vitamin and mineral deficiencies is one of the most extraordinary development-related scientific advances of recent years. Probably no other technology available today offers as large an opportunity to improve lives and accelerate development at such low cost and in such a short time. Dietary deficiencies of vitamins and minerals—life-sustaining nutrients needed only in small quantities (hence, "micronutrients")—cause learning disabilities, mental retardation, poor health, low work capacity, blindness, and premature death. The result is a devastating public health problem: about 1 billion people, almost all in developing countries, are suffering the effects of these dietary deficiencies, and another billion are at risk of falling prey to them. To grasp the enormous implications at the country level, consider a country of 50 million people with the levels of micronutrient deficiencies that exist today in South Asia. Such a country would suffer the following losses each year because of these deficiencies:

Take steps to prevent malnutrition
By Barbara Beznos iCan News Service, columnist April 30, 2002 Malnutrition is a serious and possibly life-threatening health problem. Classified as involuntary weight loss of 10 percent or more in one month, malnutrition actually causes a loss of the body's muscle and protein stores. Weight loss can slow recovery from illness and infection. Malnutrition can make you so depleted that infection would be hard to avoid and complications can arise. Your nutritional status becomes compromised by your lack of or decrease in eating. This is due to wasting, called anorexia or cancer cachexia, that causes you not only to lose fat, but muscle. Malnutrition can be present in many disorders, including cancer, celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.
