GENETIC CAUSES OF MENTAL RETARDATION
What is genetics? Genetics is "the science that studies the principles and mechanics of heredity, or the means by which traits are passed from parents to offspring" (Glanze, 1996). Through genetics a number of specific disorders have been identified as being genetically caused. One example is fragile X syndrome, a common genetic cause of mental retardation, which is caused by the presence of a single non-working gene (called the FMR-1 gene) on a child's X chromosome. Genetics originated in the mid-19th century when Gregor Mendel discovered over a ten year period of experimenting with pea plants that certain traits are inherited. His discoveries provided the foundation for the science of genetics. Mendel's findings continue to spur the work and hopes of scientists to uncover the mystery behind how our genes work and what they can reveal to us about the possibility of having certain diseases and conditions. The scientific field of genetics can help families affected by genetic disorders to have a better understanding about heredity, what causes various genetic disorders to occur, and what possible prevention strategies can be used to decrease the incidence of genetic disorders. Can a person's genes cause mental retardation?

ur past has prepared us. In 1947, a group of Baltimore parents decided they could not accept the lack of educational opportunities for their children, who had mental retardation. They founded a school, based on their belief that each child had the right to reach the highest possible level of functioning. They borrowed space in a church, and they called their vision The School of the Chimes after the message of hope they heard in the church bells. This was the first school in Maryland for children with moderate mental retardation. And it was the first in a long string of successes for The Chimes. More than half a century later, The Chimes is a multi-service organization with hundreds of highly skilled staff. We serve and support thousands of people with disabilities, who are of all ages and many levels of ability. We have an international reputation for excellence as a leader in developing programs that are effective and management systems that are efficient. Although we continue to grow and change to meet the needs of the people we serve, two constants remain: our refusal to accept conventional wisdom about their limitations, and our insistence on their right to a full life.

Converts online text into spoken words through the Awesome Talkster program. Awesome Talkster has one of the clearest synthesized voices on the Web.
Converting online text into speech has many uses. For example, Talkster can speak online stories or books to children while an adult supervises. The voice can be put in "Boy" or "Girl" mode to add a character with a bubble over his or her head. The bubble will show each word as it is spoken and the voice can be put on "slow" for your child to follow. Talkster can thereby assist your child in learning how to pronounce words while reading.
Talkster is also useful for adults. It can speak news articles to you in one open browser while you are searching for information in another browser window.
