Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome What is a Syndrome?
Syndrome is a name for a group of symptoms that happen together. A group of symptoms may collectively indicate a particular condition. If you experience several or more of the symptoms associated with mitral valve prolapse, you may have the Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome. What is the Cause of the Syndrome?
The exact cause of the syndrome is still unclear to researchers, but studies indicate that the mitral valve prolapse syndrome is associated with a slight imbalance of the Autonomic Nervous System, called Dysautonomia. What is the Autonomic Nervous System and Dysautonomia?
The autonomic nervous system is very complex. It is our "automatic" or "unconscious" nervous system, and it controls and affects most, if not all, of our body functions and systems such as our heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, sweating, gastrointestinal motility and secretions, digestion, sexual reflexes, to name a few. The autonomic nervous system has two divisions: the Sympathetic nervous system and the Parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system tends to increase and accelerate our body functions. The parasympathetic nervous system tends to relax and slow things down. These two divisions of the autonomic nervous system work together maintaining a continuous, fine-tuned balance of our body functions.

ou are not crazy. MVPS is real! In the United States alone, over ten million people-many of them women and young adults-are know to suffer from the heart condition known as Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome (MVPS). Countless others with chest pains, fatigue, dizziness, depression, migraines, or anxiety attacks are totally unaware that these symptoms may be MVPS related or even that MVPS is treatable. Now, Lyn Frederickson, founder of the first medical facility in the United States solely devoted to the treatment of MVPS, gives us the first complete guide to understanding and coping with this lifestyle-threatening problem. Written for MVPS patients, their family members, and even their physicians, Confronting Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome offers:

The picture above shows the valves of a normal heart. In the "systole" picture in the upper right corner notice how the ends of the valve meet perfectly to close off the flow of blood. Then, in the picture below, notice how in Mitral Valve Prolapse, the ends of the valve do not quite come together, allowing a leakage of blood back into the chamber of the heart. DEFINITION OF MVP:
A fairly common and often benign disorder in which a slight deformity of the mitral valve (situated in the left side of the heart) can produce a degree of leakage (mitral insufficiency). Mitral valve prolapse causes a characteristic heart murmur that may be heard through a stethoscope.
Often no symptoms are present and the condition may be discovered on a routine examination.
On the other hand, there are many who experience the following symptoms :
Chest pain (sharp, dull or pressing).
Fatigue, shortness of breath.
Dizziness.
Anxiety.
Lightheadedness when getting up from a chair or bed.
Palpitations.

Question Posted By: Pat on Wednesday, February 24, 1999
I have been using Inderal PRN for about 10 years. I was dx with prolapse mitral valve after reporting symptoms of occassional tachycardia, nausea, vertigo, weakness, and diaphoresis - usually in the middle of the night and almost always when I am ill. I was advised by my cardiologist to take inderal when I first felt that the symptoms would start (I usually can tell at least a few minutes prior). I was originally told to take 40mg but I never felt comfortable with that and have been using 10mg with success in that I avoid the symptoms or have symptoms lasting only a few minutes.
I am in a new city and asked for a refill of inderal today and this is the first time I have had an internist say it is inappropriate and unnecessary. What is your opinion?

Mitral Valve Prolapse
What is it? Mitral valve prolapse, or MVP, happens when the doors of the mitral valve in your heart do not close smoothly or evenly. MVP may also be called click-murmur syndrome or floppy-valve syndrome. The heart has 4 rooms or chambers in it. The upper chambers are called atria and the lower chambers are called ventricles. When the heart "beats," the atria push blood into the ventricles. The ventricles then push blood out of the heart. There are valves between each of these rooms. These valves are like doors that direct the blood flow through the heart. The mitral valve is between the left atrium and the left ventricle. It is made up of two smaller leaflets or doors. These leaflets come from each side of the valve and meet in the middle. The job of the leaflets is to keep blood from moving back into the left atrium. The valve opens to let blood flow into the ventricle. It closes to keep blood in the ventricle until the ventricle pushes it out. With mitral valve prolapse, part of one or both leaflets falls backward into the left atrium. This may let a small amount of blood leak backward through the valve. Your caregiver may hear a clicking sound of the floppy leaflets. Some of the blood from the ventricle may come back into the atrium. This causes a leaking or "whooshing" sound and is called a murmur.

Mitral Valve Prolapse Is mitral valve prolapse (MVP) serious?
If you have been told that you have a heart murmur from your mitral valve, or you have been previously diagnosed as having mitral valve prolapse syndrome, floppy valve syndrome, or Barlow's valve syndrome, you may be worried that you have significant heart disease. However, recent studies have shown that most patients who carry these diagnoses actually do not have significant heart disease. This condition is unlikely to get worse or require an operation. Still, it is a good idea for people with MVP to have a baseline echocardiogram to determine how closely they need to be followed by their doctors. What services are available for the care of MVP at the University of Michigan? The University of Michigan is a pioneer in the diagnosis and treatment of mitral valve disease. We have a multi-disciplinary Mitral Valve Clinic that offers diagnostic echocardiographic studies and the most modern medical treatment available. Most patients who have MVP never need surgery. However, those who do will be cared for by some of the leading mitral valve surgeons in the country. The University of Michigan is a nationally recognized Center of Excellence in mitral valve reconstruction. This procedure, in which a patient's own mitral valve is repaired, is preferable over replacing the valve with an artificial valve.

My Life With Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome and Dysautonomia... Mitral Valve Prolapse is probably one of the most common cardiovascular problems in the United States today. It is definitely one of the most *poorly understood* conditions affecting the population as well. It is VERY important for the MVP patient to understand that this is the result of the body's failure to perform its normal regulating processes.
One of the most important parts in treating the patient with MVPS is *education*.~~Phillip C. Watkins, M.D., Cardiologist, Medical Director-Mitral Valve Prolapse Center.
I myself cannot stress how vitally important it is to educate yourself as to every aspect of this condition, known as MVPS. That's why I've included these links to some of the best MVPS sites that I've found so far. If you, or a friend or loved one have been diagnosed with MVP or MVPS, then you know that you will need to learn all that you can about this condition, as with any condition of your body.
I began exhibiting symptoms three months before my nineteenth birthday. I noticed medicine hypersensitivities and shortly thereafter began having drops in my blood sugar. Panic attacks followed soon after, along with the palpitations, tachycardia, heat intolerence, and IBS. I was a big old mess and had not a clue as to what was going on inside of my body, I just knew that something had gone *haywire*, for lack of a better word. I was very frightened. After three months of these terrible symptoms, and trip after trip to different doctors and Emergency Rooms, I finally got the diagnosis of MVPS. But back then, there wasn't too much material out on the subject of MVP, and doctors did not take it serious at all. So what I've learned, I've had to do the research on my own. There's been a lot of trial and error too, in which I believe if I'd had the proper education in the beginning, I could have avoided much of.
