MVP Syndrome Information
My Story
For the first time in 15 years, I was listening to a description of my multiple physical problems by someone other than myself. What was even more exciting was the fact that I could now identify my problem with a name, Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome, and there were treatments available to alleviate some of my symptoms. WOW! I felt like I was floating on clouds!I was attending the Midwest Symposium on Mitral Valve Prolapse (sponsored by The Society for MVP Syndrome) in 1993 and little did I know at the time, the suggestions at the conference would help me dramatically. So immediately following the conference I decided to eliminate sugar, increase fluid in-take, and start exercising. Eliminating sugar is a hard thing to do! I read every label and watch out for refined sugars such as high fructose corn syrup, honey, and molasses. Please look for an additional article of mine describing some of my favorite no-sugar foods. I also increased my intake of water. My exercise program began gradually, with walking 5 minutes at a time several times a week. I was sick for at least 15 years, so it took about me 6 months to notice a decrease in fatigue, dizziness, and stomach problems. I allow my internist to mange all of my symptoms, instead of a variety of specialists. So how am I doing 2 years later? Well I am like a different person. I no longer sleep all weekend, I can ride a bicycle or walk for an hour at a time, and I can enjoy myself. Besides medication, I must follow the diet modification and exercise recommendations to control the rest of my symptoms. I am not cured, but the quality of my life has improved drastically.

Question: I would like to know what are the usual and customary treatments for Mitral Valve Prolapse? Answer: Well, they are only to treat the symptoms. Beta blockers are the usual ones to block extra beats, etc. Occasionally, antidepressants or benzodiazepines for the concurrent anxiety. Antibiotics are often recommended for dental/surgical procedures depending on the amount of leakage. [posted 12/08/98]
Question: My doctor recently put me on Atenolol for high blood pressure and mitral valve prolapse. I'm 36 and in relatively good health otherwise. I do, however, have migraine headaches that I take Excedrine (acetaminophen/caffeine) for. Thus far, this is the only medicine that I've found to work with a consistent results. I also suffer from allergies to pollens at various times of the year. My doctor told me what not to take for stuffy/runny nose, and to stay away from caffeine (which I've done for s number of years), but neglected to tell me what to use when I have these types of attacks. I've been suffering all night long and now all day as well, and still no call back from my doctor. I need to know if it is all right to continue taking the Excedrine while I'm taking the Atenolol, and what in the world do I take for congestion and runny nose/watery eyes? Thanks for your help! Thanks again.

Mitral Valve Prolapse and Thyroid Disease

by Mary Shomon

If you are experiencing heart palpitations, heart pounding, dizziness, sleeplessness, or panic attacks, and there doesn't appear to be an explanation for it, you may have mitral valve prolapse syndrome, or MVP syndrome. Recent medical research has found that the prevalence of mitral valve prolapse is substantially greater in patients with autoimmune thyroid disorders such as Graves' Disease and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. One medical reference that supports this finding includes the research reported in the journal Cardiology
Major Symptoms of MVP include:
Pounding, fast heartbeat
Palpitations
Fatigue
Weakness
Low tolerance for exercise Chest pain Panic attacks Headaches, migraines

By Christopher Berger
Introduction. Heart murmurs are abnormal heart sounds occurring due to abnormalities in one or more of the hearts four valves (1). The most common type of heart murmur is a mitral valve prolapse (MVP). Poor closure of the mitral valve and/or subsequent regurgitation of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium causes a clicking or shuffling sound heard mid- to late-systole. MVPs are reported to be the most common valvular heart disease in industrialized countries, affecting about 3% of adults (2,3,4). MVP occurs in 6-10% of young women and 4% of young men. The prevalence may exceed 10% in women ages 14-30. Following is a brief orientation to characteristics of MVP including methods of detection, associated disorders, and treatment. Abnormal Heart Sounds (Heart Murmurs). Depending upon when they occur during the normal cardiac cycle, heart murmurs can be classified into three types: systolic, diastolic, and continuous. Brukner and Khan identify eight systolic, two diastolic, and two continuous types of murmurs (5). Fabius identifies six systolic and two diastolic types of murmurs (6). Lillegard and Rucker identify five systolic, two diastolic, and one continuous type of murmur (7). Although sources differ regarding the number of diagnosable murmurs, the classification of when the murmur occurs is critical to an appropriate diagnosis. (Systolic murmurs are typically benign and diastolic murmurs are always pathological.) MVP is classified as a systolic murmur.

When a person's mitral valve is somewhat looser than normal, it may allow one of the portions of the valve to "billow" backward slightly into the upper chamber (left atrium) during the heart's contraction. This is called prolapse. This "billowing" usually creates a clicking sound that can be heard with a stethoscope. Occasionally, there may be a small leak of blood backwards into the upper chamber of the heart (mitral regurgitation). This can be heard as a heart murmur; however, the heart function is entirely normal. The heart still pumps and receives an adequate blood supply. Most prolapsing mitral valves do not tend to degenerate over time. Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a common cardiac problem and is thought to affect anywhere from five to twenty percent of the general population. Women are more often affected then men. With MVP, symptoms may not begin before the early teenage years (approximately age 14 in girls and in 15 in boys); however, people of any age may be affected. Symptoms of the Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome The Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome may be associated with several of the symptoms described below: Chest Pain: This is another frequent but poorly understood symptom of MVP. There is no characteristic or location for this discomfort. It may be sharp or dull and last from a few seconds to several hours. Chest pain may occur at rest more than with exertion, and it may occur alone or along with other MVP symptoms.

Heart valves and chambers

By DrRich Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is one of the most commonly made cardiac diagnoses. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most commonly misunderstood - both by patients and their doctors. As a result, many of the millions of Americans carrying this diagnosis have no clear understanding of what MVP is, what significance it has, what, if anything, they should be doing about it – or indeed, whether they even really have it. What is MVP?

Mitral Valve Prolapse A Case History A 41-year-old white woman arrived at Uchee Pines Institute in a wheelchair. She had had increasingly severe chest pains, palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, and anxiety over the previous 18 months. Electrocardiogram was normal; echocardiogram confirmed MVP. Several days were spent in reassurance and tapering off medications. She was given hawthorn berry tea, Epsom salts, and catnip tea as needed through the day for anxiety; hops and catnip tea allowed her to sleep without medication. She began a graduated walking program with her Lifestyle Counselor at her side for reassurance. Each day she went further and gained confidence. By the end of the third week she was walking 6-8 miles a day and was almost totally asymptomatic. She donated her wheelchair to the Institute and returned home with no further significant symptoms. The advent of echocardiography, which for the first time allowed the cardiologist to see what was going on inside the heart in real time, allowed the diagnosis of mitral valve prolapse. It involved between 25 and 30% of all women in the U.S., most being diagnosed in the 25-35 age group.

Mitral valve prolapse syndrome- mvp
Mitral valve prolapse is a medical term describing an abnormal movement of the mitral valve as the heart beats. It is frequently abbreviated as MVP. In order to understand this condition a brief description of the heart, its structure and function, what the mitral valve is and the role it plays in the circulatory system is necessary. bodyOffer(30782) The heart is made of four chambers the right and left atria and the right and left ventricles. The ventricles are the lower chambers the atria are the upper chambers. Each atrium and ventricle combination form a pump. The atrium where blood enters the heart is a collecting camber. It then pumps into the ventricle and out of the heart. Newly oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium, the top and left side of the heart. It is ten pumped through the mitral valve into the left ventricle. It then is pumped throughout the body to nourish the body’s cells. Blood is so vital as it transports oxygen nutrients and removes waste products. The entire circulatory system takes sixty seconds and will continue your entire lifetime. It is critical that blood flows in the correct direction from the chambers by contractions. The valves protect the heart from an incorrect flow. They are flaps that separate each chamber. At the appropriate time they open to allow blood to flow through, and close to prevent the blood form following backwards. The mitral valve allows blood to flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle.

Only one nutrient, magnesium, is thought to be helpful for symptoms related to mitral valve prolapse. But vitamins that work in conjunction with magnesium, especially vitamin B6, also are often recommended by some experts. NUTRIENTS, DAILY AMOUNTS, AND APPLICATIONS Magnesium: 200-800 milligrams Vitamin B6: Up to 100 milligrams MEDICAL ALERT! If you have been diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse, you should be under a doctor's care. People with heart problems or kidney problems should take magnesium only under medical supervision. Take B6 supplements in excess of 100 milligrams per day only under the supervision of your doctor. Easing Symptoms of a Troubled Heart Normally, the valves that regulate blood flow through the heart close neatly, snapping shut with the lub-dub sound that we recognize as a heartbeat. In mitral valve prolapse, however, an additional clicklub-dit-dubis added to the heartbeat. The extra sound occurs because the valve between the two left chambers of the heart is pushed out of shape by high blood pressure in the compressing heart. The valve pops upward, almost like a parachute being snapped in the wind. The condition happens when one of the fibrous cords that hold the valve in place stretches out too far or when either of the two leaflets that make up the valve is elongated, thickened or floppy. If the valve does not seal perfectly, blood may leak backward, causing the swishing noise that's known as a heart murmur.

*For Medical Professionals only, registration required Mitral valve prolapse, (MVP), systolic displacement of a portion or all of one or both mitral leaflets beyond the mitral annulus into the left atrium during systole. The prolapse usually occurs in mid or late systole and may be accompanied by various degrees of mitral regurgitation. The primary pathology is myxomatous degeneration of the mitral valve; there is variable degeneration of the leaflets, chordae tendinae and annulus. Flail leaflet with severe regurgitation is a complication of chordal rupture. The posterior leaflet is more frequently involved. Other valves, particularly the tricuspid valve, may be affected. MVP most frequently occurs as an isolated entity but has also been encountered as a component of several syndromes including Marfans syndrome Ehlers Danlos syndrome osteogenesis imperfecta , and pseudoxanthoma elasticum . MVP may also occur from ischaemic papillary muscle dysfunction. The major clinical feature of the mitral valve prolapse syndrome is mid to late systolic clicks identified with auscultation of the mitral valve. Echocardiography is usually employed for diagnosis. M-mode echocardiography shows posterior movement of the posterior or both leaflets of the mitral valve in systole. Two-dimensional echocardiography displays one or both leaflets prolapsing behind the mitral annulus and into the left atrium in systole. Other features are thickened leaflets and enlarged mitral annulus.

M itral valve prolapse (MVP) occurs in an estimated 15 million Americans. Because its clinical manifestations are extremely variable, MVP may be difficult to recognize. The disorder is usually asymptomatic but, in certain patients, it may be an important cause of incapacitating chest pain and refractory arrhythmias. The abnormal components of the mitral valve apparatus are possible sites for endocarditis, and severe mitral regurgitation can result from endocarditis, ruptured chordae, or both. Definition, Etiology and Pathology An estimated 15 million Americans, or between 3 and 6 percent of the population, have mitral valve prolapse. MVP is defined as the systolic billowing of one or both mitral leaflets into the left atrium, with or without mitral regurgitation. It is the most common form of valvular heart disease, occurring in 3 to 6 percent of the population.
