Vanderbilt University Research Area: Dopamine and stereotyped movement disorders; Neurobiological effects of early social experience; Neurobiology of social behavior. Current Research: Our research is focused on how alterations in development and social experience affect the central nervous system, particularly brain dopamine function. This focus is reflected in the following projects: We are examining the neurobiological basis of repetitive movement disorders (stereotyped, self-injurious, and compulsive behavior) in mentally retarded persons. This project, using biochemical, psychopharmacological, and neuropsychological methods is testing the hypothesis that these behavioral disorders are due to a developmental insult to central dopamine and serotonin systems. Current findings support a dopamine deficiency model and suggest the efficacy of serotonergic medications. A complementary focus is our study of the development, function, and neurobiological basis of spontaneous abnormal stereotyped behavior in wild-type muroid rodents (deer mice). These studies will provide important information about the function, pathophysiology and treatment of repetitive behavior disorders in humans. Moreover, these studies will allow us to address basic brain mechanisms that mediate environmentally-induced stereotyped behavior, and the function of such behavior for the biological organism. In addition, we are examining the brains of non-human primates who experienced early social deprivation. This early insult results in spontaneous stereotyped and self-injurious behavior.

The Child Anxiety Disorders Clinic (CADC) is a clinical/research specialty clinic of FDU’s Center for Psychological Services. The CADC specializes in the cognitive-behavioral assessment and treatment of anxiety and related disorders in children and adolescents. The clinic is staffed by licensed clinical child psychologists and doctoral students affiliated with the Ph.D. program in clinical psychology. The CADC provides comprehensive assessment and intervention services for children and adolescents, ages 3 to 17, and their families. Families may be self-referred, or referrals may be made through family physicians, schools, or mental health professionals.
INITIAL EVALUATION PROCEDURE
A comprehensive assessment is conducted by the staff and involves separate structured interviews with children and their parents. The interviews specifically assess anxiety and related problems and examine each child’s past and current psychological functioning. In addition, a number of paper and pencil questionnaires may also be administered to children, parents, and teachers (if appropriate) to provide further information on each child’s psychological functioning.

Immunization Safety Review: Thimerosal-Containing Vaccines and Neurodevelopmental Disorders
The Immunization Safety Review Committee of the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine released their review of thimerosal-containing vaccines. This report is based on the committee's review of medical literature, consideration of presentations and comments from an open meeting on July 16, 2001 in Boston, and other submitted materials. The complete report is available on the Institute of Medicine website . (Click on Read it Online - FREE! on the left side of the page) Committee Recommendations and Conclusions Conclusions The committee concludes that although the hypothesis that exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccines could be associated with neurodevelopmental disorders is not established and rests on indirect and incomplete information, primarily from analogies with methylmercury and levels of maximum mercury exposure from vaccines given in children, the hypothesis is biologically plausible. The committee also concludes that the evidence is inadequate to accept or reject a causal relationship between thimerosal exposures from childhood vaccines and the neurodevelopmental disorders of autism, ADHD, and speech or language delay.

Institute of Medicine Report on Thimerosal-Containing Vaccines and Neurodevelopmental Disorders This information is adapted from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on Thimerosal-Containing Vaccines and Neurodevelopmental Disorders.
On October 1, 2001, the Institute of Medicine's Immunization Safety Review Committee released its report examining whether or not the use of vaccines containing the preservative thimerosal can cause neurodevelopmental disorders, specifically autism, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and speech or language delay. The Committee concluded, "The hyphothesis that thimerosal exposure through the recommended childhood immunization schedule has caused neurodevelopmental disorders is not supported by clinical or experimental evidence." However, the Committee also acknowledged that the epidemiological evidence was inadequate to either accept or reject a causal relationship. The full IOM Committee report, including the complete list of the Committee's recommendations, is available at http://www.nap.edu/catalog/10208.html

Oct. 1, 2001 Link Between Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Thimerosal Remains Unclear
    • Other Links: WASHINGTON — Current scientific evidence neither proves nor disproves a link between the mercury-containing preservative thimerosal and neurodevelopmental disorders in children, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. While very few vaccines given to children in the United States today still contain thimerosal, prudence dictates that precautionary measures be taken to decrease thimerosal exposure even further. Thimerosal is used in some vaccines and other pharmaceutical products to prevent bacterial contamination. Vaccines against measles, mumps, and rubella; varicella; and polio have never contained the preservative. However, until recently, several other vaccines on the recommended childhood immunization schedule in the United States did. They are now manufactured without thimerosal, but an unknown, probably small number of vaccine doses for hepatitis B; diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis; and haemophilus influenzae type B, a form of bacterial meningitis, are still on clinic shelves. These supplies should not be used when alternatives are available, said the committee that wrote the report. "Most children in the United States being immunized today and in the future are unlikely to receive a vaccine that contains thimerosal," said committee chair Marie McCormick, professor of maternal and child health at Harvard School of Public Health, Boston. "In those few cases where only supplies containing the preservative are available, the vaccines should be administered rather than foregoing immunization. While the health effects of thimerosal are uncertain, we know for sure that these vaccines protect against real, proven threats to unvaccinated infants, children, and pregnant women."

I received and M.A. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in communicative disorders and sciences. Over the past 15 years I have been involved in clinical services delivery, clinical research, and administration. Clinically, I have a specific interest in differential diagnosis of language and motor-speech disorders in children with congenital and acquired neurologic disorders. I believe strongly that intervention programs for young children with neurodevelopmental disorders are often misguided without a clear and accurate diagnosis. My clinical research activities have focused on understanding the cognitive-linguistic processes associated with the communication deficits of children with acquired and neurologic communication disorders. Finally, through my position as Director of the Department of Audiology and Communication Disorders at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh I have developed expertise in the areas of clinical program development, construction of performance standards and the development of leadership skills in professional staff members.
