Visual Sciences Training Program Major Research Themes of the Visual Sciences Training Program The development of the VSTP became possible as research in vision science became a major area of emphasis at CWRU and five major research themes evolved. The thematic organization of our program is a major benefit to trainees as the opportunity exists to take advantage of both departmental-specific and vision theme-specific activities. Brief descriptions of each of the five vision research themes follow and more information can be obtained from links in the Program Faculty section. To get an idea where vision research is going nationally, look at a special report from the National Eye Institute: Vision Research—A National Plan: 1999-2003 http://www.nei.nih.gov/publications/plan/plan.htm Ocular Development Understanding ocular development is critical because there are numerous developmental diseases that affect eye function. Equally important is the fact that information about development is necessary to design optimized therapeutic approaches to ocular pathologies due to traumatic injury and disease of the mature eye. Members of the Ocular Development Theme study both the front and back of the eye as well as extraocular tissues, using modern cell biological and molecular biological approaches.

BULL EGYPTIAN OPHTHALMOL SOC, 2001; 94, NUMBER 6 The Surgical Treatment of Restrictive Ocular Motility Disorders El Sayed M. El Toukhi.,MD Amr Rashad,MD Tarek El Beltagy,MD ABSTRACT Purpose: To surgically treat some ocular motility disorders presenting with an abnormal head posture or cosmetically unacceptable strabismus or even diplopia. Methods: Surgical treatment, including horizontal surgery, transposition surgery, posterior fixation sutures “Faden”, vertical muscle surgery and a-y-splitting operation for upshoots. Results: In thirteen cases a functional and a cosmetically acceptable result was obtained with minimal complications. Conclusion: Restrictive ocular motility disorders are amenable to surgical treatment, provided the proper indications for surgery are chosen.
