This innovative procedure results in nearly 100 percent accurate biopsy with no incision whatsoever. A brush is used to collect the sample, which is reviewed by an oral pathologist and a high speed computer reader. Early detection of oral cancer is the key to curing this disease. Oral cancer is as common as leukemia and kills more Americans each year than either skin or cervical cancer. Patients with oral cancer have a poor prognosis, and the 5-year survival rate of approximately 50% has remained unchanged for the past 50 years. Perhaps the single most important reason for this is the fact that oral cancers continue to be diagnosed in advanced stages. Research studies have repeatedly demonstrated that the survival rate for oral cancer patients increases dramatically when the diagnosis is established in early stages. Below are some links useful for those interested in oral cancer issues. Go to the bottom of the page for a handy oral cancer self exam.

oral cancer information, clinical trials and reviews for medical professionals and laypersons.Category Health Conditions and Diseases Cancer Head and Neck Oral...... What is Mouth Cancer? Cancer of the mouth, or oral cavity , includes thatextending back as far as behind the last molar ( wisdom tooth ).
    http://www.cancergroup.com/em29.html
    M OUTH C ANCER
The mouth is an amazing machine for speech and eating, it actually starts the process of digestion. Normally good mouth hygiene ensures healthy teeth, and a lifetime of trouble free chewing (the muscles of the jaw are the strongest of the body). Occasionally people develop a cancer in the mouth.
From a cancer doctor perspective, the mouth is anything forward of the last molar, up to the lips. This includes the part of the tongue we see in the mirror, the hard palate, and the inside of the cheeks. Anything behind the last molar is called "oropharynx" and is a different area which includes the tonsils and base of tongue.
Cells in the mouth are subjected to lots of injury from heat and abrasion, and thus must divide frequently to replace those lost due to injury and old age. Normally, cells divide quickly as we develop in the womb and through infancy, and then the rate slows down considerably, just to replace cells that die. The division of cells in the mouth and elsewhere is under very tight control, regulated by the genes within the cells. When this control is lost, the cells may start to divide in a haphazard, uncontrolled manner, and grow to form a swelling of abnormal cells, called a " tumor ". A "

The extraoral assessment includes an inspection of the face, head, and neck. The face, ears, and neck are observed, noting any asymmetry or changes on the skin such as crusts, fissuring, growths, and/or color change. The regional lymph node areas are bilaterally palpated to detect any enlarged nodes, and if detected, their mobility and consistency. A recommended order of examination includes these regions:

    Smoking and Oral Health
Tobacco use A harmful oral habit is the use of tobacco. Here are some oral problems that may occur with the use of tobacco.
    Oral Side Effects of Tobacco
    • sticky tar deposits or brown staining on the teeth 'smoker's palate' - red inflammation on the roof of the mouth delayed healing of the gums increased severity of gum disease bad breath or halitosis black hairy tongue oral lesions gum recession - with chewing tobacco at the site of the tobacco "wad", the gums react by receding along the tooth root, exposing the root oral cancer
Hazards of Tobacco One of the most devastating effects of tobacco is the development of oral cancer. Approximately 75% of all oral cancers in North America are associated with tobacco use and alcohol consumption. The risk of oral cancer increases with the number of cigarettes smoked each day and the number of years that the person has been smoking. Cigarettes are not the only oral habit that can cause oral cancer, all tobacco products, such as; smokeless/spit tobacco, cigars, and pipes are associated with oral cancer. The type of tobacco product will also dictate where the oral cancer can be located in the mouth. For instance, smokeless tobacco is linked to cancer of the cheek and gums.
Benefits of Tobacco Cessation The most significant preventive measure used to prevent oral cancer is cessation of tobacco products. When a person stops using tobacco, the risk of developing oral cancer drops rapidly. In 10 years of tobacco use cessation, the risk is similar to an individual who has never smoked. Oral cancer can be prevented by choosing to be a non-tobacco user.

    www.WebSiteSource.com
Index of this page True Cord Cancer Cancer of the Supraglotic Larynx Subglottic Squamous Cell Cancer What if I have further questions and have ... yet been treated? Although a large number of tumors, polyps, and various assorted "bumps" can present themselves in the voice box (or "larynx", pronounced "lare-inx") the most common form of cancer is called Squamous Cell Carcinoma or Squamous Cancer. The reason I have spent so much time explaining this is that the treatment plan for glottic, subglottic, and supraglottic cancers varies greatly. We will discuss treatment of these cancers in different sites of the voice box, but let me tell you right up front that there are sometimes distinct differences of opinion about the proper treatment plan for a patient and you may find qualified experts on both sides of the question. I can only tell you our treatment philosophy and then be certain to inform you of the other options that are available even though we may disagree with them. Finally, neck lymph node involvement in voice box cancer is quite variable. Metastatic cancer in lymph nodes of patients with true cord cancer is extremely rare. The reverse is true for patients with supraglottic cancers, where it has sometimes been estimated that 40% of these patients will have some spread of cancer to the lymph nodes of the neck upon diagnosis. Management of the lymph nodes will be included in whatever treatment plan is felt to be appropriate for that patient. This will involve surgery and/or radiation therapy.
