Osteoarthritis is the deterioration of cartilage in the joints, resulting in pain and soreness. The term osteoarthritis is a misnomer. "Osteo" is a prefix derived from the Greek word for bone and "itis" is a Greek suffix referring to inflammation. Logically, then, one might presume that "osteoarthritis" means inflammation of the bone. In reality, osteoarthritis produces little inflammation and the pain and soreness is caused by deterioration of cartilage in the joints. This condition is more accurately called degenerative joint disease . Many people who think they have arthritis actually have degeneration of the cartilage in the joints. The joints are the intersections of two bones. The ends of the bones are covered with

OA is the most common form of arthritis in the United States, affecting more than 20 million Americans. Osteoarthritis (OA) begins with the breakdown of cartilage in joints, resulting in joint pain and stiffness. OA commonly affects the joints of the fingers, knees, hips, and spine. Other joints affected less frequently include the wrists, elbows, shoulders, and ankles. When OA is found in one of these joints, there is usually a history of injury or unusual stress. View our osteoarthritis animation to see how the progressive loss of cartilage in osteoarthritic joints can cause pain and inflammation If you think you might have OA, take the time to learn more about its symptoms, causes, and diagnosis . Make an appointment to see your doctor. Only your doctor can diagnose your condition. Early diagnosis is important so you can begin treatment that will help to relieve pain , improve mobility, and minimize disability.

It is possible to live a normal and active life with osteoarthritis!Includes information on arthritis prevention and arthritis relief.

Arthritis Sufferers Can Lead Full And Active Lives
Do you or any of your loved ones have arthritis pain? If so, you should know that, in most cases, people with arthritis can lead a full, active life by properly managing the condition. In fact, leading an active life and keeping weight down may be the best prevention and coping technique of all.
Within this web site, we'll cover several key areas about osteoarthritis, including pain management, exercise, weight management, tools and devices, and supplements that may help with relief. As with any medical condition, consult your physician before taking any course of action to help with the condition. Treatment Versus Prevention
While difficult to avoid, injuries to the joints increase the risk of eventually developing osteoarthritis in those joints. This typically occurs many years after the injury. Although joint replacement is currently the only real remedy for severe osteoarthritis, many strategies exist to relieve the symptoms and provide a measure of relief.
    Take It Easy
Avoid putting too much stress on your joints, and don't risk injuring your joints. Losing excess weight is essential to the proper management of osteoarthritis, and may be the most effective method of arthritis prevention in your control. Rubber heels on shoes with proper arch support can reduce jarring, and a walking stick, cane, or walker can be helpful if balance is a problem.

    http://www.osteoarthritis-symptoms.com/
Osteoarthritis Is The Most Common Form Of Arthritis
When you met elderly people as a child, you probably noticed that many of them had enlarged knuckles. Or they had difficulty getting up from a chair. They may have rubbed their knees or massaged their hands while they were talking. Certainly, you saw elderly folks walking with canes, gingerly stepping down from curbs, and moving very slowly. They may also have had difficulty getting into and out of automobiles.
Swollen joints and aching backs are among the most visible indicators that someone is suffering from arthritis. In fact, a burning or aching sensation in the fingers has been, for some people, among the early symptoms of arthritis that would soon affect many other joints.
However, joint pain and swollen joints by themselves aren't enough to warrant an arthritis diagnosis. Other diseases and conditions present in the same way. This site explains the methods your doctor uses to make a diagnosis of osteoarthritis. You'll also learn to recognize possible early symptoms of arthritis either in yourself or in a loved one. If you'd like to know what causes osteoarthritis, who's at risk for this condition, and whether your current knowledge about arthritis checks out, visit the

Explains that the site is subdivided by osteoarthritis remedies, includingdiscussions of prescription arthritis drugs and arthritis medication.
    http://www.osteoarthritis-treatments.com/
Over A Hundred Distinct Types Of Arthritis Have Been Documented
Of all the types of arthritis, osteoarthritis is by far the most common. More than twenty million Americans live with the inflammation and pain caused by this condition.
Because so many of the elderly are living with osteoarthritis, you've probably already heard about traditional remedies or cures for the condition. Many elderly couples have retired to the Sun Belt, for example, because one or both of them suffered from arthritis and they assumed that dry or warm weather (or both) would relieve the pain.
Although soaking up the sun is fun, we now know that the severity of the condition is completely unrelated to temperature, humidity or barometric pressure. However, the move is well worth the expense if people who are limping or unsteady can live in a climate where snow and rain are absent. However, the aches and pains will persist without further treatment.
    Osteoarthritis Remedies
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disorder that can be slowed and controlled, but no cure currently exists. Osteoarthritis remedies manage and treat the disease so those with arthritis don't suffer as much pain or stiffness. This site outlines the different osteoarthritis remedies currently available, focusing on a specific type of treatment on each page. Topics include:

      About osteoarthritis
      What is it?
Osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease (DJD), is a form of arthritis characterized by the loss of joint smoothness and range of motion without major joint inflammation.
      Incidence and risk factors
Quick Quiz - Do you know the facts? Osteoarthritis involves low bone density. True or false? True False Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease (DJD) is the most common type of arthritis, affecting over 20 million people in the United States. DJD probably affects almost every person over age 60 to some degree, but symptoms are often mild. Some individuals have an inborn tendency to degenerative joint disease because they have changes in the structure of the important protein-building blocks of the articular cartilage which covers the surface of their joints. These seemingly small, but significant abnormalities predispose the joint to wear and degeneration. In other cases, joint injuries may contribute to the development of DJD.
