How I discovered that I had Parkinson's At first my husband noticed something strange. I walked without
swinging my right arm - it just hung down loosely at my side. I was
unaware of any pain or discomfort and was rather reluctant to go to
the doctor.
Then we wondered whether I had a tumour on the brain and on the
recommendation of a doctor friend, we consult a Neurologist. After
a Magnetic Resonance Scan it was established that there was no tumour. By process of elimination, it was diagnosed that I had Parkinson's. Having had absolutely no record of my family having this disease, I was astounded. However, one must face reality. My symptoms Looking back now, various Parkinson's symptoms developed which were initially overlooked. I did not have much of a tremor as such, only a slight one under stress. One of my more recent symptoms was "frozen feet". This feels as though your brain is not getting through to your feet. In other words, you tell your feet to move

On the City's Edge:
Hazardous Radioactive Waste Dump and Groundwater Contamination
by Sue Dayton

Groundwater is the lifeblood of New Mexico and the Middle Rio Grande Valley. But a threat to this precious resource will be allowed to remain if citizens do not speak up. The New Mexico Environment Department, in response to requests by Citizen Action, has agreed to sponsor a series of public meetings on the Mixed Waste Landfill (MWL), a hazardous waste dump located at Sandia National Labs, a contractor for the Department of Energy (DOE). Citizen Action is a local group advocating clean up of the MWL. The public meetings are an opportunity for YOU to become more informed about this dump, and to give YOU an opportunity to tell the decision-makers your thoughts about what should be done with this hazardous dump. YOU will have the chance to influence the health and safety of countless future generations of New Mexicans.

Parkinsons Disease
Parkinson's Disease: New Treatments and the Push for a Cure Last week, actor Michael J. Fox and former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali joined a panel of scientists before Congress to advocate for increased research funding for Parkinson's disease, which fell short of projections by the National Institutes of Health in both 2001 and 2002. Fox and Ali suffer from neurological degeneration associated with Parkinson's, and each contends that with the recent advances in our understanding of the disease, a cure is not far off - provided there are adequate resources.
Approximately one million Americans are affected by Parkinson's, and though there is still no cure for the disease, there have been major advances in both surgical and nonsurgical treatments in recent decades, which are helping patients to cope better with its effects, and live longer.
Below, neurologist Dr. Blair Ford, Medical Director of the Center for Movement Disorders Surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, introduces some of the latest treatment techniques for Parkinson's disease.
What are the current medical treatments for Parkinson's disease?

Parkinson's Disease: Is Victory in Sight?
With complete references for researchers
by Hans R. Larsen, MSc ChE
If research into Parkinson's disease continues at its present pace this dreaded disease may well be fully understood and largely preventable early in the 21st Century. Parkinson's disease ( paralysis agitans , shaking palsy) was first described in 1817. L-dopa, the mainstay of current drug therapy was introduced in 1970 and since then hundreds of research papers have been published on the disease. It is now increasingly clear not only what causes Parkinson's, but also how it can be prevented and its relentless progress slowed down. Incidence and Symptoms
Idiopathic (of no known cause) Parkinson's disease affects about one percent of the population over the age of 60 years in the United States. It is more common among men than among women and also seems to be more widespread in northern countries. The incidence of the disease increases with age although aging itself is not believed to be a causative factor. Parkinson's disease is rarely inherited and less than one per cent of all cases are thought to have a genetic component. At this time there is no medical cure for the condition, but drugs that alleviate the symptoms and slow the progress of the disease are available(1-5). The main symptom of Parkinson's disease is a pronounced tremor affecting the extremities notably the hands, chin or lips. The tremor is most evident at rest and disappears with movement. Other characteristic symptoms of Parkinson's disease are stiffness or slowness of movement, a shuffling walk, stooped posture, and difficulties in performing simple tasks. Memory impairment and cognitive dysfunction are rarely encountered in early stage Parkinson's disease. Depression is, however, a common feature and about 30 per cent of Parkinson's disease victims eventually develop Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia(1-3,6-8).

SURGERY FOR PARKINSON'S DISEASE
INTRODUCTION This page contains a lot of graphics, so please patient if you are using a modem. There has been a recent resurgence of interest in surgery for Parkinson's disease. This has been largely for 2 reasons:
  • improvements in neurosurgical techniques and neuroimaging.
  • the incomplete efficacy of current anti-Parkinsonian drugs when taken chronically for a significant number of patients.
Current stereotactic surgical techniques for Parkinson's disease include:
  • thalamotomy
  • pallidotomy
  • deep brain stimulation
  • striatal grafting of dopaminergic fetal tissue
In the current discussion, I will only deal with pallidotomy, but we will be providing more information on the other surgical aspects in the near future. PALLIDOTOMY The history of this operative procedure in Parkinson's diseases is fascinating, in that in 1960 Svennilson and Leksell had noted that in the last 20 of their series of 81 Parkinsonian patients who had had a thermolytic lesion of the globus pallidus , there was a marked relief of tremor and rigidity. In these last 20 cases, the surgeons had altered the area to be lesioned from the anterodorsal to the posteroventral region of the medial globus pallidus (GPm). These results were largely overlooked for the next 2 decades, until:
  • In 1992, Laitinen et al described 38 patients with Parkinson's in whom he had performed a lesion of the posteroventral region of the GPm. 37 patients had a marked improvement in their rigidity and hypokinesia.

Cloned animal cells may help treat Parkinson's disease
This rat received cloned bovine brain cells April 27, 1998 Web posted at: 11:54 p.m. EDT (0354 GMT) From CNN Medical Correspondent Rhonda Rowland ATLANTA (CNN) Researchers are using cloned animal cells in an attempt to ease the tremors and erratic movements caused by Parkinson's disease. Researchers at the University of Colorado transplanted cloned bovine brain cells into the brains of rats. The cloned cells were effective in treating the symptoms of Parkinson's in the rats. "What we found was that the bovine fetal dopamine cells were just as good as bovine embryo cells from an animal that was not cloned," said Dr. Curt Freed of the University of Colorado. By using the cloned cells, the scientists hope to replace the brain's dwindling supply of dopamine-producing cells to ease tremors. Cloning often raises fears, but researchers say there's a big difference between cloning brain cells and cloning humans. Cloning cure?

    Parkinson's Disease
    Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's disease is actually a group of related CNS disorders caused by the destruction of the substantia nigra (pigmented brain cells), which produce dopamine (a neurotransmitter). The deficiency of dopamine results in the loss of muscle tone and voluntary muscle control seen in PD. Recent studies indicate that dopamine deficiencies in other areas of the brain and abnormalities of other neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine and serotonin, may also contribute to the disease. Signs and Symptoms Although onset of PD can be rapid, it is generally insidious, with symptoms gradually progressing over a number of years until they interfere with daily activities. The four major symptoms of Parkinson's disease are

Welcome to our Web Site. We've developed it specifically for people who are current or future caregivers to patients with Parkinson's disease . We trust you'll find this site an extremely valuable source of information and references that will help you understand the nature of the disease. Just as important, we trust this site will help you better understand how you can be at your most effective when providing care for your Parkinson's patient. As you explore this site, you'll discover that there is quite an extensive support network available to you; that Parkinson's is most often an extremely manageable disease; and that with each passing day, the prospect for ever more effective and long-lasting treatments becomes more certain. Thanks again for visiting the site - and let us know what you think , or how we can continuously improve our efforts to assist you and your fellow Parkinson's caregivers!
It is not easy to accept the diagnosis of a chronic illness that relentlessly progresses. Questions flood your mind. Do you die of Parkinson's? (Thankfully, the answer is NO.) What is the prognosis? How long can the patient continue to work? He has changed so much over the past year or two. What took us so long to recognize that something was wrong? Will changes in his behavior continue to increase? Crowding these questions are silent pleas for help. The spectre of what lies ahead seems so frightening!

On December 10, 1998, five couples from the Tuolumne General Hospital Parkinson Support Group (lead by Pat Noonan, coordinator of Tuolumne County Hospital Adult Care Center) got together to discuss the possibility of starting a non-profit foundation. The purpose was to help Parkinson patients with financial help for a surgical treatment and /or medications before they become so debilitated that their life style becomes non- existent. We started slowly because we needed to have counsel from an attorney and a CPA who would give us their time pro-bono. It took several months to find them but we did. We have named our organization, Mother Lode Parkinson Foundation We are grateful to Mick Grimes and Donna Wilson of the Sonora Area Foundation , who have given us excellent guidance. As of this date, we have all the legal documents granting us tax-exempt corporate status. People at all levels are infected with this disease: MICHAEL J.
