Pink Rot of Tuber Symptoms on Potato
Pink Rot of Tubers (fungi - Phytophthora parasitica and P. cryptogea ): Diseased tubers are spongy and initially discolored around the point of stolon attachment. Later, they become discolored around the buds and lenticels. The internal tissues appear cream-colored when cut, but turn salmon pink after 15 - 20 minutes. They gradually become darker, turning black after about 1 hour. Diseased potatoes have been observed in the Texas High Plains primarily in furrow irrigated fields with clay soils. Control includes selecting sites with good soil drainage and avoiding excessive irrigation late in the growing season. October, 1996

Subject: Porites Pink Blotch Disease
Date: Friday, May 07, 1999 6:08 PM Regarding the Porites Pink Spot/Ring/Blotch Disease, I have seen this syndrome at many sites in the Pacific....including my study sites in Papua New Guinea. I collected samples and brought them back to my lab on ice. I observed what appears to be a mesh work of hyphae, as well as a high concentration of coral mucus. I have heard that someone has isolated a fungus (European marine biologists) I see this particular syndrome closer to the continental slope, and it seems to disappear in the outer reefs (far away from anthropogenic run-off or deforestation). If this pink blotch is isolated and proven to be a confirmed fungus and not a symbiotic consortium of bacteria, would it be easy to link this un-known species to the land as a soil based microbe from soil run-off?

Conjunctivitis
(Pink Eye)
Etiology: The conjuctiva is the mucous membrane that lines eyelids and is reflected onto the eyeball. Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of this mucous membrane. CAUSES: Conjunctivitis is highly contagious when it is caused by a viral infection. Factors that can contribute to the disease include: bacterial infection, injury to the eye, allergies, and substances that are irritating to the eye such as fumes, smoke, contact lens solutions, chlorine from swimming pools, chemicals, make-up, or any other foreign substance that enters the eye. SYMPTOMS: Eyes may appear swollen and bloodshot; they are often itchy and irritated. Because the infected membrane is often filled with pus in conjuncivitis, the eyelids often stick together after being closed for long periods. If pain and blurred vision occur, seek medical attention immediately. NUTRIENTS:.............
  • Vitamin A emulsion , 100,000 IU daily for a month, then 25,000 IU daily from capsule form, helps promote immunity to viral infection. Vitamin C , 2,000-6,000 mg. per day in divided doses, protects the eye from further inflammation and enhances healing.

RELATED QUESTION Pink Eyelids? June 20, 2002 Question My 83-year-old mother's eyelids are pink. This started about a month ago and it comes and goes. We haven't been able to think of any foods she's eaten that might cause this. She has high blood pressure for which she takes medicine, and also has a leaking heart valve, but she refused a stress test. Should she see an eye doctor or her family doctor?
Answer The eyelid skin is the thinnest in the body, and with age it becomes even thinner and the fat around the eyes begins to protrude forward giving a baggy appearance. Potential causes of pink eyelids might include: contact allergy; environmental allergy; thyroid disease (Grave's Disease); liver disease; an eyelid disorders (obstructed gland; inflammation); and fluid retention. Allergens in the air can cause the eyelids to swell and become pink in color. Generally the eyes will be red and quite itchy and watery. Another possibility would be a new laundry or hand soap, eyelid cosmetics, hairsprays, a new pet, or is wearing a new clothing material outfit on a regular basis. These agents could be causing a local contact-type allergy, which again could be mild, but significant enough to cause the eyelids to intermittently become pink. Some generalized diseases can also cause skin coloration changes. They include connective tissue disease (lupus); thyroid disorders, liver disease, and others. However, the skin color changes would not be so intermittent in nature if this were the case.

Diseases of Skin Inflammatory Diseases: Acne Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the sebaceous (oil) glands and hair follicles. The scattered lesions caused by acne can manifest as single or multiple bumps generally called nodules or papules. The lesions are associated primarily with the sebum-producing glands that surround hair follicles in skin that is visibly greasy. Lesions are typically distributed to the face, neck, chest, shoulders, back and upper arms. Dermatitis /Eczema Both dermatitis and eczema refer to superficial inflammatory diseases of the skin. Contact Dermatitis (CD) Contact dermatitis is an inflammation caused when your skin comes in contact chemical allergens or mechanical irritants. Primary-irritant CD is a nonallergic skin reaction to an irritant. Lengthened or repeated exposure to the irritant is necessary to cause skin damage. Allergic CD is a delayed hypersensitivity dermatitis. This a cell-mediated hypersensitivity reaction to allergens in the environment. Some causes of allergic CD include: poison ivy, industrial chemicals, various drugs, latex, hair dyes, and some metals.

Epidemiology and Control of Pink Rot of Potatoes
E. O'Sullivan and L.J. Dowley Crops Research Centre, Oak Park, Carlow ISBN 1 901138 73 9 September 1998
This report is also available in the printer-friendly Adobe Acrobat PDF (29 KB) format.
Summary
Rotting of tubers was reported in early potato crops in Co. Wexford in 1995. Geotrichum candidum , which causes a condition known as rubbery rot, was isolated from a sample of affected tubers. In further investigations in 1996 both G. candidum and Phytophthora erythroseptica , the cause of pink rot, were isolated from diseased tubers. In pathogenicity tests P. erythroseptica re-infected tubers while G. candidum did not. It was concluded that the disease was pink rot. In 1997 foliar applications of the systemic fungicide metalaxyl were evaluated for its control. The level of control obtained was insufficient to overcome the problem which pink rot can cause in early potatoes.
Introduction
There were widespread reports of soft rotting of potato tubers in first and second early crops in Co. Wexford in 1995. An investigation of some crops in late July showed that the problem was not soft rot but a condition similar to pink rot caused by Phytophthora erythroseptica . This disease was first described in Ireland by Pethybridge (1913) and was subsequently reported in several other countries (Stamps, 1978). The affected tubers, while soft and spongy, remained intact. The exposed surfaces of cut tubers turned pink and subsequently black. In a preliminary study

Water rots of potato are a problem that many growers deal with to some degree every year. Tubers that have water rot appear discolored and may have a waterlogged appearance that will often be dotted with white tufts of fungal growth. There are actually two different types of water rot, pink rot and Pythium leak, each caused by a different fungus. PINK ROT Probably the most prevalent of the two water rots is pink rot caused by the soil-borne fungus Phytophthora erythroseptica . This disease can be found in the field before harvest and is characterized by rotted tuber tissues that turn pink after exposure to air for 20 to 30 minutes. Another important diagnostic trait for pink rot is that the rot will usually appear to start from the stem end of the tuber and will then progress through the tuber in a very uniform manner, often with a nearly straight line between the healthy and the diseased portions of the tuber. Pure pink rot is not a slimy soft rot, but infected tissues are easily, and often invaded by soft rot bacteria which will cause this symptom. In a tuber that is infected with the pink rot fungus alone, the rotted tissues will retain some structure and firmness but not nearly as much as the healthy portions of the tuber. The texture of the infected tuber tissue is much like that of a boiled potato. We refer to this as a "cooked potato" texture. Another feature of pink rot is the characteristic smell of ammonia that is given off by pink rot infected tubers. This odor can frequently be defected in potato storages prior to the development of visual symptoms.

The Pink-Ribbon Trap
Breast cancer activism has to go beyond simply encouraging women to get mammograms and joining support groups by Barbara A. Brenner and Barbara Ehrenreich The Los Angeles Times
Dec 23, 2001 For almost a decade, American women, along with their families and friends, have marched, run, hiked and even climbed mountains in the name of breast-cancer "awareness." They have affixed pink ribbons to their lapels or worn special breast-cancer-themed garments like the Ralph Lauren pink pony T-shirt. They have distributed and displayed hundreds of breast cancer-related tschotchkes, from pink teddy bears to breast cancer awareness bank checks. One goal of all this activism has been to raise money for breast-cancer research, but the larger, more diffuse, aim is always "awareness": getting out the message that "early detection saves lives" and that the best means of detection is the annual screening mammogram, or, as Rosie O'Donnell puts it, going out and getting "squished." So it must have come as a shock to most of America's grass-roots breast-cancer activists that a Danish study, reported in the Oct. 20 Lancet, found no evidence that routine mammography reduces the death rate from breast cancer. There will be continuing debate and no doubt- -given the American medical establishment's huge financial investment in mammography screeningsharp attacks on the Danish study. But this is not the first major study to challenge the dogma that mammography is our first and best line of defense against the disease. It was five years ago, in 1996, that David Plotkin, director of the Memorial Cancer Research Foundation of Southern California, concluded from a review of studies available then that the benefits of routine mammography are "not well established; if they do exist, they are not as great as many women hope."

Control methods recommended will only be non-chemical or biological. It would be impossible to supply chemical names for control as regulations and chemicals registered for that pest vary greatly not only from country to country but states and even countys. Chemicals should only be used as a last resort and then only a low toxic chemical should be applied.
July 2000
Watch for this One:
Pink Hibiscus Mealybug

The Pink Hibiscus Mealybug (PHM) Maconellicoccus hirsutus is no ordinary pest and it could be on it's way to your area. It attacks more than 200 kinds of plants, as the name implies it attacks hibiscus but also others including beans, chrysanthemum, citrus, coconut, coffee, cotton, corn, croton, cucumber, grape, guava, , peanuts, pumpkin, rose, and mulberry.
It arrived in Grenada in 1994 spread to Guyana in South America and at least 14 other Caribbean islands. It has now established itself in central and northern Africa, India, Pakistan, northern Australia, and southeastern Asia, and now in tropical areas in the Western Hemisphere. As far as I can ascertain from research it has not yet hit continental United States. But the feeling is it's only a matter of time.
Although the Plant Protection and Quarantine branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) are trying to keep this exotic pest out of the country, as I'm sure are other similar departments in other countries.

Spatial and temporal models of Pink Bollworm population in Pakistan in 1998. Figure 1 (Click the figure to see enlarged picture) Data and background: Pink Bollworm (PBW) is an important pest on cotton both in Pakistan and the United States(see web reference ). PBW population data were collected by the Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI) from over 1000 locations in Punjab province in Pakistan between June 8 and Oct 26,1998. The population data are based on moths counted in sex pheromone traps weekly. Data are expressed as moth catches per trap per night. The time span covers most of the growing season of cotton in Pakistan. The sample locations are shown in figure 1 . The data were analyzed in the Department of Plant Pathology in the University of Arizona using Geostastistics and GIS. We are trying to find the temporal and spatial patterns of pest and disease epidemics, which can be consulted as part of a pest management program. The temporal and spatial patterns are shown below. Results and analysis: Figure 2( click the figure to see details of analysis Temporal patterns .The PBW population is very low at the beginning of the season in most of the sampled area. Figure 2 show the results from each district. In figure 2 we can see the trend of PBW population during the season in all of districts where samples were taken : 1) The PBW populations increase progressively from June 8th to around July 27th; 2) They come to a peak between July 20th and Aug 3rd; 3)The populations level off or decline ofter Aug 3rd. Trap counts are relatively high until the end of the season. In some of the districts, the values have a slight increase after Oct 12th (For example, the Sahiwal, Rannanpur and Layyah districts).
