Incidence of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) accounts for 90% of women with oligomenorrhoea (infrequent periods) and 30% of women with amenorrhoea (absent of periods) and over 70% of women with anovulation.
Diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Laparoscopy Laparoscopy allows direct inspection of the ovaries; the ovaries are enlarged and polycystic. However, polycystic ovaries may appear normal at laparoscopy. Vaginal ultrasound scan (better than abdominal) The vaginal ultrasound may show the typical PCOS appearance but reliability varies with expertise. Blood hormone levels of LH, FSH, androgens and SHBG Ideally, these tests should be performed during the first four days of the cycle. If the women has no period, then the test can be performed anytime, and repeated if the results do not provide a clear picture. FSH levels are low or normal, LH levels are often raised. However, a normal level does not exclude diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). The levels of androgens and testosterone may be raised.

You are about to enter the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Zone… Beware, the subject matter found within this web page is designed to enlighten and encourage women with this dreaded condition. If you enjoy being miserable and feeling like you’re the only person in the universe who must endure PCOS, then you have come to the wrong place! Hello and Welcome to my Web Site! My name is Dawn and I am a 31 year-old woman who lives with a condition called PCOS.
My original intent for publishing this web site was to help educate and comfort the average PCOS-inflicted woman who happened to find her way into my domain. In retrospect, it was a rather cathartic endeavor that greatly helped to lift my own spirits as well. Please feel free to explore my little chunk of the universe and e-mail me with any comments you might have. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), and Stein-Leventhal Syndrome are all names for the same condition, which I will simply refer to as PCOS throughout my site. PCOS is an endocrine condition that afflicts roughly 6-10% of all pre-menopausal women.

What is PCOS?
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (also referred to as Stein-Leventhal syndrome, polycystic ovarian disease or hyperandrogenic chronic anovulation) is an endocrine disorder found in 5%-10% women. It can cause a myriad of symptoms that appear, on the surface, to be unrelated, including:
  • irregular or absent periods lack of ovulation weight gain (particularly around the waist - the "apple" shape as opposed to the "pear" or "hourglass" shape which is more typical for women) hirsutism (excess body hair) which tends to worsen over time insulin resistance (now thought to be a cause rather than a symptom, more on this later). When insulin resistance is found along with high blood pressure, high triclyceride levels, decreased HDL (good cholesterol) and obesity, it is sometimes termed "Syndrome X". acne male-pattern balding multiple small cysts on the ovaries acanthosis nigrans (darkening of the skin under the arms and breasts and at the nape of the neck)

I was diagnosed with PCOS in June of 1998 after 13 months of trying to get pregnant. Since then, my husband and I have spent many hours researching this "syndrome" and though I feel I've learned quite a bit about the scientific effects, I wasn't able to find many outlets to find other women and their husbands who are trying to get pregnant with PolyCystic Ovatian Syndrome. This site was created as a meeting place for all women and their husbands who are trying to get pregnant, as well as those couples who were successful in getting pregnant with PCOS.

You Are Not Alone! Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a complex endocrine disturbance found in 5 - 30% of the world's female population. First diagnosed in 1935 as Stein - Levinthal Syndrome, it is one of the most common causes of
infertility, and yet it still is misdiagnosed in most cases.
The symptoms of PCOS vary within each individual, but common complaints include: irregular menstrual periods, male pattern baldness, obesity or unexplained weight gain, excessive facial and/or body hair, insulin resistance and infertility. Women who have PCOS have an increased risk of adult onset diabetes, hypertension, early onset heart disease, cancers of the reproductive organs, and a higher chance of miscarriage and infertility. Though there is currently no cure for this disorder, it can be controlled to an extent with certain medications and a proper diet.
I want to add my name to the list of "cysters" out there on the web, those who know what they are dealing with, and those who are just now discovering what their bodies have been telling them all along. Just knowing that what I am facing has been dealt with for decades, gives me the strength and courage to make it through another day. Thank you all! We are angels with but one wing, and to fly we must embrace each other.

Diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Frederick R. Jelovsek MD
Many women with anovulation causing infertility or irregular menses have, or think they have, a diagnosis of polycystic ovarian disease. That term has been replaced by polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). The term syndrome is used because this appears to be more than one disease. At least there are different combinations of symptoms that have similarities. Traditionally PCOS included obese women with excess hair growth (hirsutism) who had anovulation (no menses) or oligoovulation (infrequent menses). They are at higher risk for endometrial cancer, hypertension and diabetes in later life. Not all women who are obese and have ovulation problems have PCOS in fact only about 40-60% do!
Categories often labelled as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
  • traditional PCOS anovulatory, increased androgens, no insulin resistance
  • endocrine syndrome X anovulatory, increased androgens, insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
  • non-traditional PCOS anovulatory, normal androgens, obese, insulin resistant or type 2 diabetes

Treatment with Insulin Lowering Medications by Mark Perloe, M.D.
    INTRODUCTION:
Polycystic ovary syndrome is characterized by anovulation (irregular or absent menstrual periods) and hyperandrogenism (elevated serum testosterone and androstenedione) . Patients with this syndrome may complain of abnormal bleeding, infertility, obesity, excess hair growth, hair loss and acne. In addition to the clinical and hormonal changes associated with this condition, vaginal ultrasound shows enlarged ovaries with an increased number of small (6-10mm) follicles around the periphery (Polycystic Appearing Ovaries or PAO) . While ultrasound reveals that polycystic appearing ovaries are commonly seen in up to 20% of women in the reproductive age range, P oly C ystic O vary S yndrome (PCOS) is a estimated to affect about half as many or approximately 6-10% of women. The condition appears to have a genetic component and those effected often have both male and female relatives with adult-onset diabetes, obesity, elevated blood triglycerides, high blood pressure and female relatives with infertility, hirsutism and menstrual problems.
As of yet, we do not understand why one woman who demonstrates polycystic appearing ovaries on ultrasound has regular menstrual cycles and no signs of excess androgens while another develops PCOS. One of the major biochemical features of polycystic ovary syndrome is insulin resistance accompanied by compensatory

What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)?
    Making the Diagnosis of PCOS

In no other gynecological condition is the general medical history more important than in PCOS. There are 3 different ways to make the diagnosis of PCOS: 1) by symptoms and physical findings, 2) hormonal testing, and 3) ultrasound. Probably most individuals will have abnormalities in all three, some only in two, and possibly only in one. Some may argue that findings in only a single category may not constitute PCOS. But, until we have PCOS better characterized, or find a different diagnosis for these patients, the diagnosis of PCOS should remain and provides a good starting point for communication. Even the most minor of apparent problems may have significant implications for future general health and well-being. The classic findings of PCOS are: menstrual cycle abnormalities, increased sexual hair growth and obesity
    Menstrual Disturbance
Often in PCOS patients, the menarche occurs at the usual age of 12-13 years. Some PCOS patients may start menstruating earlier. Not uncommonly, PCOS patients may first be seen by a physician for lack of menses. Any female who has not had menses by age 16 should be evaluated. The menstrual cycle may at first be regular, but by high school, cycles start to lengthen and may be skipped. Often during this time, oral contraceptives are started. The "pill" usually regulates the menstrual cycle and may give the false impression that all is well. Usually in the teenage years, the other symptoms of skin and weight problems also start to be seen. Some PCOS patients easily establish a pregnancy in these early years. Occasionally, birth control pills may even increase the chance of pregnancy by suppressing abnormal hormonal production.
