    Causes of prostatitis
The causes of prostatitis are not well understood or defined. But it is generally believed that there are several types of prostatitis , which appear to be the result of many causes Before we describe the types of prostatitis and list the possible causes, there is one important point to consider. Some prostatitis sufferers find their symptoms are aggravated by spicy foods, salt, sugar, artificial sweeteners and alcoholic beverages, including beer. See and An important message
    Types of prostatitis
Acute bacterial prostatitis An inflammation of the prostate gland that is caused by bacterial infection. It may occur suddenly and can be severe. It is rarer than the other types of prostatitis and is usually seen in younger men. Acute bacterial prostatitis can be caused by some sexually transmitted diseases, urethral instruments (such as a catheter or cystoscope) or an infection somewhere else in the body. It may begin with chills and fever associated with lower abdominal discomfort or perineal pain. Others symptoms may include burning while urinating, a weaker urine stream or difficulty in urinating. Ejaculation may be painful. Bowel movements may increase the abdominal pain. Without sufficient treatment, acute prostatitis can develop into chronic prostatitis. Chronic bacterial prostatitis This more common type of prostatitis is also believed to be caused by bacteria found in urine or prostate gland secretions. It often develops slowly and has less intense symptoms, but is more persistent over a longer period of time, and may indicate a recurring infection. This inflammation of the prostate gland may be associated with or follow a urinary tract infection or acute prostatitis. The symptoms can include recurrent urinary tract infections, and low back, testicular, perineal or pelvic floor pain. There may also be pain with bowel movements or ejaculation. The possibility of having chronic prostatitis appears to increase with age. The risk may also be increased by excessive alcohol consumption, perineal injury and some unsafe sexual practices.

    Prostatitis What is prostatitis?
Prostatitis is common and affects many men at some time. Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland. When part of your body is inflamed, it is red, hot and sore. Prostatitis can cause many symptoms. It can make urinating difficult or painful. It can make you have to urinate more often. It can also give you a fever, low-back pain or pain in your groin (the area where the legs meet your body). It may make you less interested in having sex or unable to get an erection or keep it. Prostatitis is easy to confuse with other infections in the urinary tract. What is the prostate gland? The prostate is a gland that lies just below a man's urinary bladder. It surrounds the urethra like a donut and is in front of the rectum. The urethra is the tube that carries urine out of the bladder, through the penis and out of the body. Your doctor may check your prostate by putting a finger into your rectum to feel the back of your prostate gland. The prostate gland makes a fluid that provides nutrients for sperm. This fluid makes up most of the ejaculate fluid. We do not yet know all of the ways the prostate gland works.

A patient education handout on prostatitis, written by the authors of this article, is provided on page 3025. P rostatitis is inflammation of the prostate gland. In clinical practice, the term prostatitis encompasses multiple diverse disorders that cause symptoms related to the prostate gland. One author has described prostatitis as "a wastebasket of clinical ignorance" because so many poorly characterized syndromes are diagnosed as prostatitis. The spectrum of prostatitis ranges from straightforward acute bacterial prostatitis to complex conditions that may not even involve prostatic inflammation. These conditions can often be frustrating for the patient and the clinician. Every year, approximately 2 million physician visits include the diagnosis of prostatitis. Prostatitis is a common condition. In a survey of National Guard members (20 to 49 years of age) using a self-reported diagnosis of prostatitis, a 5 percent lifetime prevalence was noted. A population-based study of men (40 to 79 years of age) in Olmstead County, Minn., suggests a lifetime prevalence close to 9 percent. The latter study used a medical record review to confirm physician diagnosis of prostatitis. Patients with a previous episode of prostatitis were at significantly increased risk for subsequent episodes.

    Prostate Problems Facts and Statistics
The doughnut-shaped prostate gland surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine and semen through the penis) and is located below the bladder. This gland produces semen, which works to keep sperm lubricated and mobile, and aids the bladder in the flow of urine. After a man hits puberty, his prostate gradually grows from roughly the size of a small marble to about the size of a golf ball. Around age 50 and due to a variety of factors, his prostate begins to grow again. This increased growth can cause a variety of problems, most commonly Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) or an enlarged prostate, prostatitis, and even prostate cancer.

Prostatitis is a common urologic condition that many clinicians find difficult to treat effectively. It has been estimated that up to half of all men suffer from symptoms of prostatitis at some time in their lives. The prostate is a walnut sized gland that is located beneath the urinary bladder (see picture). The prostate surrounds the urethra (urine channel) like a donut. When the prostate becomes inflammed it can impinge on urine flow and cause symptoms. The function of the prostate is to produce fluid and enzymes that contribute to the semen and are needed for male fertility. Prostatitis was categorized into four forms: Form of Prostatitis Symptoms Prostatic Secretions Culture Results Acute Bacterial Fever, chills, burning, back, lower abdominal, testicular or groin pain, general malaise or weakness, difficulty with urination

by The Urology Treatment Center Doctors Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland that develops suddenly. Acute prostatitis is caused by a bacterial infection of the prostate gland. Many bacteria are capable of causing prostatitis. Escherichia coli is one of the more common types of infection. E. coli typically is found in the colon. Acute prostatis may also develop as a result of urethral instrumentation (such as catheterization or cystoscope), trauma, bladder outlet obstruction, or an infection elsewhere in the body. Here are some tips for those who have prostatitis: Do's:
    • Take sitz baths (sit 15 minutes in tub and soak in hot water three times day). Take medications as prescribed by your doctor Drink lots of clear liquids including an extra 4 glasses of water a day.
