Visualize muscle fibers running down your arm from the elbow to the wrist. We will focus on the top of the arm, muscles collectively called "The Extensors". When the muscles are contracted you feel tight ropes traveling down your arm, each muscle distinct from the other. If you press deeply and slide on the muscle, from the elbow down, you will often feel "bumps" that are painful. The "bumps" are muscle spasms, the "tight ropes" are the contracted (shortened) muscle fibers. A spasm involves only some of the fibers of the entire muscle, a contraction is when the entire muscle shortens. The muscle is still attached at the two points, but since it is too short to comfortably make the distance, you are feeling a strong pull on the insertion point.

Every so often, one of my students works a little too hard, and begins to feel pain in their hands, fingers, arms or shoulders. I take these warning signs very, very seriously. Many of these students may be on a short, hard road to a variety of injuries such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), Tendonitis, or other over-use syndromes. These injuries are classified under the term "Repetitive Strain Injuries" by medical professionals. Trust me, you don't EVER want to go through with this. I'd like you to hear Natalka, a former student of mine, explain her experience with RSI. Natalka's problems began once she started university. The root of the problem lay in years of playing with poor posture and body awareness. Here's the story in Natalka's own words:

YOU ARE HERE: Home Expert Advice Calendar RSI Awareness What the heck is a REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY ? And why should you be aware of it? Repetitive strain injuries are the damage that we cause ourselves by doing the same activity over and over again. Typing and moving a mouse around can cause CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME , a type of RSI . But any motion that you do over and over again without a break can result in physical injury even walking! But there are some steps you can take to PREVENT RSI's and that's what this holiday is all about. Take a look at your workspace is it laid out in an ERGONOMICALLY correct fashion? Your CHAIR should be adjusted so that your feet are flat on the ground, your thighs are parallel to the floor, and your back is supported. Your COMPUTER monitor should be at eye level, and your wrists should be flat as you type or use your mouse. Take a few minutes every once in awhile to STRETCH . Get up from your desk, walk around the room, flex your wrists, circle your neck, roll your shoulders, touch your toes whatever it takes to work out the

Repetitive Strain Injury
The aim of these notes is not to enable you to self-diagnose, but to make you aware of the various problems so you can recognise the symptoms and take preventative action. Some very important points to note You should use this understanding to help avoid problems and catch possible problems at an early, sub-clinical stage. Prevention is very much better than cure. Self-diagnosis is often very difficult, as problems in the neck can cause pain in the elbow and a back problem regularly manifests itself as pain in the legs. Terminology Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is an umbrella term, a shorthand to refer to various musculo-skeletal injuries which are normally related to some activity. Acronyms If you are into acronyms you can choose from Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTD) Work-related Upper Limb Disorders (WRULD) Occupational Overuse Injuries. (OOI) The medical terms include: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common medical diagnosis for those suffering from RSI. Tendonitis commonly results from overuse and consequent inflammation of the tendon in the wrist, forearms, elbow or shoulder.

What is RSI? RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury), also called CTD (Cumulative Trauma Disorder), refers to pain or injury caused by actions that use a part of the body, such as arms and hands, over and over in the same way for a long period of time, especially when the body stays in a relatively static position. RSI refers to a family of specific diagnoses, such as carpal tunnel, epicondylitis, etc. Most people who have an acute episode of pain, a relatively short-lived symptom (i.e., less than 2-3 weeks), get better relatively quickly if proper prevention and conservative care are followed. Many patients thereafter may have mild episodic discomfort which is transient. This is often a function of amount of exposure and usually can be managed effectively through ergonomic modification and proper pacing of work. back to top How do I know if I have RSI?

NHS Direct - self-help guide Repetitive strain injuries (RSI) (Tendonitis) The explosion in computers has brought with it an increase in the number of repetitive strain injuries, which are commonly associated with the wrists and fingers. In truth there were always a large number of people suffering from this often distressing and even debilitating condition. Musicians, particularly string instrumentalists, are well recognised to be at risk. Other occupations such as carpenters, electricians and nurses can suffer from tendon injury through repetitive movement. Symptoms It's not that difficult to tell if you have RSI. Generally, the pain gets steadily worse as the day goes on. During your days off the pain eases, only to come back again when you return to work. As the condition progresses you may find it difficult to move a finger, hand or arm. In severe cases it may progress to tenosynovitis and you will feel a crackling sensation as you move a joint. It may even stick in one place, only to suddenly move as you try harder to move it. Causes Tendons move inside a lubricated sheath not unlike a bicycle brake cable. Either from injury or repetitive movement, the tendon becomes inflamed and moves as if it were 'rusty' and in need of oil. Worse still, this movement further inflames the sheath, which tightens onto the tendon, causing pain. In some severe cases, small islands of bone form in the tendon itself, which can completely obstruct any movement.

Karjalainen K, Malmivaara A, van Tulder M, Roine R, Jauhiainen M, Hurri H, Koes B ABSTRACT Order full review View and/or submit comments What's new in this issue Search abstracts ... About The Cochrane Library A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 26 May 2000. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Upper limb repetitive strain injury is a common problem in western countries, causing human suffering and huge economical losses. Patients with prolonged pain associated with repetitive tasks in the work place can face both psychological and physical difficulties. Different treatment programmes, physical, psychological, behavioural , social and occupational treatments have been developed and used to help these patients. Objectives: The objective of this systematic review is to determine the effectiveness of biopsychosocial rehabilitation for upper limb repetitive strain injuries among working age adults. Search strategy: The reviewed studies for this structured Cochrane review were identified from electronic bibliographic databases, the Science Citation Index, reference checking and consulting experts in the rehabilitation field. The original search was planned and performed for a more broad area of musculoskeletal disorders. Trials on repetitive strain injuries were separated afterwards.
