Finding Ways to Relieve Repetitive Strain Injuries
Research Insights showcases research findings from the Institute's Working Paper series. In summarizing and interpreting our research, our goal is to provide tools to improve your understanding of workplace health, injury, and disability, and the effectiveness of care once injury has occurred. Newspaper workers prove that there are some things you can do to take the pressure off your nerves and muscles... Additional Working Papers produced by the Institute on repetitive strain injuries include Working Paper #60, Recovery from Upper Extremity Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders: The Implications of the Case Definition; and Working Paper #65, Estimating the Burden of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Newspaper Workers: What Difference do Case Definitions Make? Workers call it repetitive strain injury (RSI); health professionals prefer the broader term workplace musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), but they're talking about the same thing: an injury to muscles, tendons and nerves caused or aggravated by work. WMSDs are painful and debilitating, usually resulting in intense discomfort in the neck, shoulders and upper limbs and in some cases the lower back. In the early stages, the movement that is causing the injury becomes difficult to perform, in more advanced stages, it becomes impossible.

Repetitive Strain Injuries
Repetitive strain injuries (RSI) afflict many people who have computer-intensive jobs, but it can affect almost anyone. RSI is also known by names such as Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTD) or Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD). This website is divided into four main areas, as can be found in the navigation menu to the left. The links to Technological and especially Popular contain by far the most amount of information. However, the few links in Medical and Legal are just as important, due to their more authoritative nature. This website was created by James Schellenberg in December of 2000 as a final project for LIS 695 Health Informatics in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at the University of Western Ontario.
OCCUPATIONAL STRESS AND REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURIES
Research Review and Pilot Study
Barbara Neis and Susan Williams - ISER Report No. 8
Repetitive strain injuries (RSI) and stress are major threats to occupational health in many employment sectors. This report presents an overview of existing literature on these threats to occupational health in a cheap and accessible form. In addition, Occupational Stress and Repetitive Strain Injuries contains results of a pilot study on problems with stress and RSI among fish processing workers in the deep-sea sector and responses to these problems from local health professionals. A draft questionnaire designed for fish processing workers, but easily modified for other workplace sectors, is also included in the report. Findings on fish processing in the province point to the need for changes in work organization, technology design, worker safety education, training for rural health professionals in the area of occupational health and further research. The northen cod moratorium has freed up workers and facilities for research and education in occupational health. Research and training related to occupation health and organization should be an integral part of redesigning the fishing industry for the future. This report should be of interest to trade unionists, health professionals, academics and policy-makers.

http://power-in-motion.com/ct.htm
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI's) are the number one injury/illness occurring at the workplace. An umbrella and sometimes "garbage can" diagnosis for a myriad of medical diagnoses, these injuries are on the rise, with 300,000 new cases diagnosed annually. Once widely seen only amongst factory workers 20 to 30 years ago, carpal tunnel and RSI's are sweeping through white collar occupations. Average costs of a single RSI case reportedly can cost an employer up to $30,000.00. The carpal tunnel is a bracelet formed by bone and tough ligament, just below the wrist at the heel of the hand. Through this rigid structure pass nine finger tendons, connective tissue, arteries, veins, and the median nerve. The median nerver conducts impulses from the brain, down the arm to the thumb, forefinger, middle and half of the ring finger. Excessive up-and-down wrist and finger movements (keyboard use) eventually irritates the synovium (the lining of the carpal tunnel), causing swelling, resulting in pressure on the median nerve which causes numbness and tingling associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. Due to the prolonged static position that computer operators and factory workers maintain, an often overlook area of the body where carpal tunnel symptoms originate is in the cervical and upper thoracic spine. Neck and shoulder muscles held in a state of constant contraction, compresses and distorts the alignment of the vertebrae, perpetuating muscles spasms throughout the neck, shoulder and arm. The Brachial Plexus (the major network of nerves) extending from the cervical spine and across the top of the shoulder is squeezed, affecting the median nerve and referring and radiating pain into the wrist and hand. Additionally, the delicate vasculature (blood vessels) and lymph system (fluid transport) of the arm is likewise threatened.

Repetitive Strain Injuries Can Be Prevented
Excerpt from Pamphlet by Sharon J. Butler
Sharon Butler sent us an email asking if we’d like a copy of her new pamphlet titled as above. Of course I said “Sure.” (I’ll have her pamphlet at our upcoming meeting for members to browse through.) The following is an excerpt:
How to Stretch Properly
Pay attention to the sensations you feel as you stretch. This helps you develop a sense of what kinds of exercises or stretches you need, and how often to practice them.
Never stretch beyond your comfort level. Overworked tissues will recover more quickly when they are stretched gently.
Stretching is most effective in the mild to moderate range of sensation.
Maintain a mild stretch until the stretching sensation lessons or disappears completely. This will indicate that the tissues that were being stretched have lengthened.
If the stretching sensation grows stronger at any point in the stretch, reduce the intensity of the stretch until you return to a mild range of sensation.
Copies of this pamphlet are available for $5.00 and a self-addressed, double-stamped business sized envelope. Order from: Advanced Press, 1708 Lancaster Avenue, Ste. 321-L, Paoli, PA 19301 and a copy will be sent to you by return mail.

Is RSI all in the mind after all?
"Emerging research suggests too much typing might affect your brain. If it’s proved right, treatments that focus on the physical symptoms of RSI could be all wrong" WHEN KEYBOARD users first complained of repetitive strain injuries in the early 1980s the sceptics said it was all in the mind. One British judge famously opined that RSI was merely a sign that the sufferer had an ‘egg shell personality’. These days we know better. Government statistics estimate that, in the USA and Britain alone, over a million people suffer from RSI. And large tracts of rain forest have been sacrificed to provide advice on how to avoid the health and safety risks associated with using keyboards and VDUs. But emerging research suggests that too much typing might indeed affect your brain. US physical therapist Nancy Byl is researching a controversial theory that RSI could be the result of pushing the brain past its ability to learn fast, delicate movements. If she’s proved right, treatments that focus on the physical symptoms of RSI could be all wrong. A recent report in the UK journal New Scientist describes how researchers are linking the physical symptoms of dystonia, the severe form of RSI colloquially known as writers’ or musicians’ cramp, to problems in the brain.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD)—recently renamed complex regional pain syndrome types I and II—is a documented condition described in the literature as a pain syndrome occurring as a result of trauma to a body part. Repetitive strain injuries have been described as injuries that at least partially involve microtrauma to soft tissue. In a number of cases patients with RSI have slowly developed RSD, which has been neglected in the literature. I have recently been introduced to the possibility that many RSI patients have "mild" or "early" RSD, and I want to alert other clinicians as well as patients. Traditionally, physicians have diagnosed RSD when certain documented medical criteria have been met. In order for the diagnosis of "probable RSD" to be made, the patient would need to exhibit five or more of the following criteria as indicated in the literature by Colton and Fallat (1966): 1. Allodynia (perception of pain from a stimulus that is normally not noxious) or hyperpathia (an exaggerated response to painful stimuli)

Overview
VoiceCode is an Open Source initiative started by the National Research Council of Canada , to develop tools for programming by voice. It builds on existing systems developed by various individuals For many programmers with computer related injuries such as Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), programming through voice input is the only way that they can continue exercising their talents in their chosen profession. Yet, programming-by-voice using off the shelf speech recognition systems is currently an ackward process because programming languages were never meant to be spoken (see here for an example ). Consequently, programmers have had to develop a number of custom tools to make programming-by-voice practical.
