Immune globulin with a high titer of antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus may offer infants and young children at risk protection from this serious, common respiratory illness.

RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the lower airways) and pneumonia in babies. It is an illness that often occurs in yearly outbreaks in communities and in newborn intensive care units (NICUs). In the United States, RSV is more common in winter and spring months. What causes respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)?

Respiratory Syncytial Virus ( RSV ) and Asthma
Serious Health Threat to Newborns and Infants
By the age of two almost every child has had an RSV infection . The symptoms are the same as the common cold, and for most older children, that's as serious as it gets. This is not the case for newborns and infants. Due to their small size, newborn and infants are susceptible to the excess mucus produced in response to the RSV infection, clogging and blocking tiny airways. RSV accounts for 100,000 hospitalizations and 4,500 deaths of infants and children each year . RSV is also responsible for 50-75% of bronchiolitis and 20-25% of pneumonias in the very young Its relationship to Asthma
There's also evidence that RSV is linked to the development of asthma in children. Children who've been diagnosed with RSV and needed medical attention are 33-50% more likely to have asthma like symptoms of wheezing later in life. Severe cases of RSV in children over the age of one are more likely to be diagnosed with asthma. It's debatable whether these children's asthma is precipitated by RSV, or the children's genetic predisposition to asthma makes them more susceptible to RSV

Data examining the response to RSV challenge of young calves with high levels of maternally derived antibody (MDA) to RSV, has provided new information on why Bovipast RSP is so highly effective in very young calves. Published at the recent World Buiatrics Congress in Hannover, the work compared an inactivated vaccine (Bovipast RSP) to a commonly-used modified live vaccine (mlv).
VIDA statistics show that RSV is most common in calves in their first few months of life. This, combined with the fact that young calves have some physiological differences in lung structure and function mean that the young calf is particularly susceptible to the effect of RSV challenge.
It is known that the effect of maternal antibody can limit response to some modified live virus (mlv) vaccines, but there has been little published work on the limiting effect of MDA on vaccination against RSV. Amongst other things, work had to be carried out to help understand any differences between live and inactivated vaccines and the effect of the vaccine adjuvant.
Graph 1: Antibody response
These laboratory differences were substantiated in a challenge trial whose findings were reported at Hannover. This trial set out to examine the speed of response to an inactivated (Bovipast RSP) and a commonly used mlv vaccine. Work, again at Compton, specifically set out to see if young MDA-positive calves, challenged after a single dose, were in a better position to withstand RSV challenge. In this trial, calves of between two and six weeks of age that were MDA positive to RSV, received a single dose of Bovipast RSP or the UK-licensed mlv vaccine, before being challenged three weeks later.
