Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) involves inflammation of the lining of many different joints in your body. In some people, RA can also affect other parts of the body, including the blood, the lungs, and the heart. Inflammation of the joint lining, called the synovium , can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, warmth, and redness. The affected joint may also lose its shape, resulting in loss of normal movement. RA can last a long time, and can be a disease of flares (active) and remissions (little to no activity). View our animation to see how inflammation and joint damage progress in rheumatoid arthritis. RA affects about 2.1 million Americans, or about 1% of the adult population in the United States. This disease is two to three times more common in women than in men, and generally affects people between the ages of 20 and 50. However, young children can develop a form of RA called

Arthritis
Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is defined as causing joint inflammation and stiffness for more than six weeks in children under 16 years of age. It is estimated that between 30,000 and 50,000 children in the United States have JRA, making it the most common rheumatic disorder among this age group. Although the causes of JRA are not well understood and no cure exists, medications are available to reduce swelling and pain. In contrast to adults with rheumatoid arthritis, who typically have lifelong symptoms, more than half of those children with JRA will outgrow the disease. Complicating the diagnosis of JRA is the fact that many adult forms of arthritis and rheumatic diseases Three different types of JRA have been classified according to their symptoms and the number of joints involved:
  • Pauciarticular.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes the immune system to attack the joints. In some respects, this reaction is similar to an allergy, in which the body often reacts with a runny nose and itchy eyes. In rheumatoid arthritis, the autoimmune response can lead to permanent, painful changes in the joints. The joints are the intersections of two bones. The ends of the bones are covered with cartilage (a smooth, durable substance) that allows bones to glide over each other with minimal friction. Cartilage also acts as a cushioning device to absorb forces. A structure called the joint capsule surrounds, stabilizes, and protects the joint. Within the capsule is a synovial membrane that contains

Immune System Disorder Seminar
While Dr. James Bishoff of Montana was at the hospital visiting patients he happened to notice a flyer announcing an Immune System Disorders Seminar being held that same week in his area.
Always wanting to stay up to date on healing therapies for immune system disorders and autoimmune disorders such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Epstein Barr, Lupus, etc. Dr. Bishoff decided to attend. Although he was skeptical, Dr. Bishoff was honest enough to admit that he didn't know everything and just maybe he might learn something new. Besides, he had another reason for going...
Tired Of Being Sick You see, although Dr. Bishoff is a medical doctor, he was always sick. In fact, the year he went to the immune system disorder seminar he had been sick 5 times in 4 months. All the antibiotics he took helped, but shortly after - he'd get sick again. He'd get a flu shot and he'd still get the flu.
His wife was sick as well. She had continuous bouts with chronic bladder infections and took antibiotics as well without much success. From the bladder infections and antibiotics she got yeast infections. At the time Dr. Bischoff attended the immune system disorders seminar she was dealing with a severe yeast infection that had already lasted 4 months.
This was not a situation unique to just him and his wife. Many of their friends were sick and in spite of the prescription drugs they were taking, they weren't getting well.

    About rheumatoid arthritis
    What is it?
Rheumatoid arthritis primarily affects the synovium, the membrane that lines and lubricates a joint. It is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis.
    Curability
There is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis at present. Until the cause of RA is known, it will not be possible to eliminate the disease entirely. The goals of current treatment methods, therefore, are to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, stop or slow down joint damage, and improve function and patient well-being.
    Symptoms
Initial symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are generally pain and stiffness in the morning and few symptoms with activity. The pain and swelling will usually progress on to obvious joint swelling and the level of stiffness in the morning increases. Other symptoms include fatigue and difficulty sleeping due to joint stiffness.

The research shows continuous reduction of pain resulting from osteoarthritis of the knee, with clinically significant results within four weeks. According to the study’s principal investigator, the information also suggests that topical application of these agents is an effective route of administration.
    Exercises for a Rough Shoulder
Shoulders can lose their normal smoothness of motion for a wide variety of reasons. In many situations the roughness is related to tightness of the soft tissues around the joint, to abnormal posture, or to shoulder weakness. Even if you have had an injury or if there is some arthritis in your shoulder, it is likely that you can benefit from a simple home program to optimize your shoulder's comfort and function. Before beginning these exercises you should consult with your physician.

    http://rheumb.bham.ac.uk/radesc.html
    Rheumatoid Arthritis
    What is rheumatoid arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is actually a family of related diseases, not a single entity. The problems are primarily a consequence of persistent inflammation . In the right place and for a limited period, such as a localised infection, inflammation is good, because it is the body's mechanism for dealing with the problem. It results in the attraction of white cells from the blood, which help fight the infection. In RA, however, the inflammation becomes persistent, without having any known beneficial effect. It happens in the layers of tissue that line the joint (the synovium), causing pain and swelling and stiffness when moving the joint. There may be excessive production of the synovial fluid that lubricates the joint, making pressure build up and causing pain. Whilst any joint can be affected, it is usually in the small peripheral joints, such as those in the fingers or wrist, that this is first noticed. Often, joints are affected symmetrically. Other features that can accompany RA include the presence of a protein called Rheumatoid Factor in the blood. Sometimes, usually after many months, the development of pits or erosions can occur in thejoints; this can be seen by X-ray. Although RA usually begins to affect people from their forties onwards, it can strike at any age, including young children.
