Understanding Rheumatoid Arthritis
What is it?
Rheumatoid Arthritis affects one to two percent of the population. It appears to hit women the hardest, with an estimated 2.1 million female sufferers in the United States alone. Although it normally shows up between ages 20 and 40, rheumatoid arthritis can strike anytime. This type of arthritis is a systemic autoimmune disease potentially affecting the entire body and involving many different joints. When the body's immune system is not functioning correctly, healthy joint tissue comes under attack. Joint damage and inflammation of the joint linings cause pain, stiffness and swelling.
Symptoms
Early in the disease, people suffer from inflammation, pain, and stiffness. Symptoms often begin in the hands or feet, but can also impact elbows, shoulders, neck, knees and hips. Accompanying this can also be fever, poor appetite, fatigue and anemia and rheumatoid lumps, which form under the skin.
Causes
A specific cause has yet to be pinpointed, although researchers have identified a genetic marker that is probably influential in the start of the disease. The earlier a diagnosis is made the better, because arthritis can often be controlled with swift drug intervention.

Arthritis and Potassium IV. Roles of Potassium in the Body V. Electrolyte regulation (sodium and potassium) ... When blood potassium is too high PREFACE We subscribe to the HONcode principles
of the Health On the Net Foundation It is my contention that potassium deficiency is either causing, or greatly making worse, rheumatoid arthritis which I will shorten to "arthritis" in these articles. In assessing the possibility of this hypothesis people have little to go on. Virtually any textbook in the past would devote no more than a paragraph to potassium which would state that potassium is never deficient in the diet, or give one exception to the dozen or more known, or in some only under clinical conditions. The reason for this careless treatment of potassium is probably because potassium is present in almost all foods as grown in large quantities. Professionals think about it as if it were air or water. However even air and water can be deficient and if voluminous texts are not written about these deficiencies, it is because both deficiencies can be detected by our senses. Extremely powerful emotions and instincts impel people to correct these deficiencies immediately and at any cost. Potassium is odorless, colorless, and, in the usual concentrations, tasteless. There is no way to detect a deficiency and cell content can not even easily be assessed in the body by modern analytical procedures. Whole body cell content is virtually "invisible".

POTASSIUM IN FOODS, to treat rheumatoid arthritis and heart disease.
by Charles Weber Do not rely solely on discussion of nutrients if you are sick, but seek medical consultation as well. Someone who has rheumatoid arthritis and therefore has a bad deficiency in potassium should be able to acquire the as much as the missing fifty or sixty thousand or so milligrams missing from the one hundred thirty to two hundred thousand normally present (depending on the weight of non fat tissue, that is usually almost 2000 milligrams per kilogram of weight [Flink ] ).again in only a few months or less and largely heal any reversible damage (such as possibly the fundamental changes in ion channels of arthritics [Trujillo] ) in only a few more weeks using food alone. This should be possible even though arthritics tend to have a higher amount of the potassium excreting hormone, aldosterone, than normal people [Khetagurova] do. It is only necessary to select the right food and prepare it correctly . Large amounts of potassium are possible from food alone as some South American Indians receive over 8 thousand milligrams per day from their food [Oliver]. Potassium can be increased more quickly with potassium chloride supplements also, but unprocessed food is the safest way, and can rarely cause

Collagen Type II Collagen Type II contains glucosamine sulphate, chondroitin sulphate A, cartilage matrix glycoprotein (CGMP) and other proteoglycans which over 30 years of controlled studies indicate that they help to rebuild the cartilage in arthritis joints. It has a much higher absorption rate of 70- 90 % compared to typically 8% absorption rate for ground cartilage. In a study of 10 rheumatoid arthritis patients Collagen Type II demonstrated a 70 percent response rate of the most severe cases of rheumatoid arthritis with no side effects, with the patients completely removed from standard medications. Subsequent studies supported these initial results and in some cases resulted in complete remission of rheumatoid arthritis. Oral ingestion of collagen type II has been posited as the most effective natural means of arthritis management regardless of the form of the disease. In addition, a study of 120 patients with coronary heart artery disease Collagen Type II therapy reduced the incidence of fatal heart attacks by 600 percent.

A large number of population studies have confirmed an association between RA and a cluster of genes involved in immune function that is called the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) complex. FDA Approves New Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis
FDA has approved adalimumab (marketed by Abbott Laboratories as HUMIRA) to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This is the second treatment of its kind and may significantly increase the availability of these therapeutics to patients. HUMIRA is produced by recombinant DNA technology. It is a human-derived antibody that binds to human tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha). TNF is naturally produced by the body and is involved with normal inflammatory and immune responses. Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, a disease that affects more than 2 million Americans, have high levels of TNF in the synovial fluid (lubricating fluid in joints). The extra TNF plays an important role in both the pathologic inflammation and the joint destruction that are hallmarks of RA. By working against the inflammatory process, HUMIRA, like other TNF blockers has been shown to be effective in controlling symptoms of the disease. HUMIRA is indicated for reducing signs and symptoms and inhibiting the progression of structural damage in adult patients with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis who have had an inadequate response to one or more disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). HUMIRA can be used alone or in combination with methotrexate or other DMARDs.

When my Grandmother was diagnosed with RA a few decades ago, the milder cases were simply put on aspirin, over 20 a day! If they didn't die of a bleeding ulcer, they were quickly disabled from the disease. The more severe cases might be put on prednisone or gold but was pretty much it. Not a lot to choose from.
As much as I hate having RA, I am glad I have it now. Never before have we had so many treatment options. In the last two years we've been bombarded with new drugs and treatments. We have so much to choose from. Most of us will live full productive lives, unlike those a generation ago.
There are a host of new drugs in development, and maybe even a cure in the works. The next generation of RAers may never even have to consider a joint replacement or take a liver damaging drug, what a wonderful world that will be! Disease Description
