    Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's)
The microbes that cause sexually transmitted diseases are equal opportunity bugs. They don't care if you are white or black, rich or poor, educated or illiterate, happy or sad. If you're a warm body, you'll do. STD germs settle in an estimated 12 million Americans each year. Worldwide, they find 250 million new hosts a year. [More] Here are a few basic facts everyone should know for his or her own protection:
    • STDs are easily spread through any person-to-person transfer of bodily fluids such as semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. When someone has a sexually transmitted disease, anyone who has sex with that person stands a good chance of becoming infected. Thus, having sex with multiple partners carries a greater risk of disease than staying faithful to a spouse or long-term partner. Even a monogamous relationship isn't necessarily risk-free, however, since one partner could be carrying an infection picked up during a prior sexual encounter.

What are sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)? Why do women need to be concerned about them?
STDs, once called venereal diseases , are among the most common diseases in the United States. STDs are diseases that you get by having sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal) with someone who already has an STD. Caused by a number of bacteria and viruses , more than 20 STDs affect both women and men. While some STDs can be cured, other STDs are life long (can't be cured). STDs can affect a person's physical health, emotional health, and quality of life. While rare, STDs can cause life-threatening conditions, particularly when they are not treated. Experts believe that having an STD can increase a person's chances for getting infected with HIV , the virus that causes AIDS.

Fact Sheet N° 186 December 1997 YOUNG PEOPLE AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES FACTS ABOUT YOUNG PEOPLE
      • There are more than 1.5 billion young people (between the ages of 10 and 24) in the world today; 85% of them live in developing countries. Between 1970 and 2025, the urban adolescent (between the ages of 10 and 19) population in developing countries will grow by 600%. In the least developed countries, only 13% of the girls and 22% of the boys enroll for secondary education. Globally, 5 out of every 10 unemployed are young people; in some developing countries it is 8 out of 10. 73 million adolescents between the ages of 10 and 14 are working worldwide.
      FACTS OF LIFE
      • For the vast majority, sexual relations begin in adolescence. Unprotected sexual relations increase risks of unwanted pregnancy and early childbirth, as well as unsafe abortion and sexually transmitted diseases (STD) including HIV/AIDS. Lack of knowledge and access to contraceptives as well as vulnerability to sexual abuse puts adolescents at highest risk of unwanted pregnancy. In developing countries, maternal mortality in girls under 18 is two to five times higher than in women from 18 to 25.

Men and women are different from the get-go. The genetic (chromosomal) differentiator of an embryo, a pair of sex chromosomes, can be either XX or XY. Males result from the XY configuration. The differentiation of the primitive gonads are genetically determined. In a genetically male embryo, the primitive gonads begin to develop into testicles during the 7th and 8th week of gestation when placental gonadotropic hormones cause the differentiation of the center portion of the gonad while the outer portion regresses. The United States has the dubious distinction of leading the industrialized world in overall rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), with 12 million new cases annually. About 3 million teenagers contract an STD each year, and many will have long-term health problems as a result. Women and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to these diseases and their health consequences. In addition, STDs increase the risk of HIV transmission. The Hidden Epidemic examines the scope of sexually transmitted infections in the United States and provides a critical assessment of the nation's response to this public health crisis. The book identifies the components of an effective national STD prevention and control strategy and provides direction for an appropriate response to the epidemic. Recommendations for improving public awareness and education, reaching women and adolescents, integrating public health programs, training health care professionals, modifying messages from the mass media, and supporting future research are included. The book documents the epidemiological dimensions and the economic and social costs of STDs, describing them as "a secret epidemic" with tremendous consequences. The committee frankly discusses the confusing and often hypocritical nature of how Americans deal with issues regarding sexualitythe conflicting messages conveyed in the mass media, the reluctance to promote condom use, the controversy over sex education for teenagers, and the issue of personal blame.
