The Unmatched Quality of Copper. Historically, copper has served as the ultimate roofing material of choice. Unsurpassed in durability, beauty and value, copper is the only roofing material that actually improves with age. This "aging", or patina process, not only enhances its appearance, it also protects the metal from further oxidation. Copper's longevity is legendary. Almost all of the copper produced throughout time is still in use. And, in addition to being 100% recyclable, most architectural copper produced today has a recycled content of nearly 75%. Thus, not only is copper the best choice to protect a structure, it's also the best choice to protect the environment.

Shingles: An Unwelcome Encore
By Evelyn Zamula In Italy, shingles also is called St. Anthony's fire, a fitting name for a disease that has bedeviled saints and sinners throughout the ages. Caused by the same varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox, shingles (also called herpes zoster) most commonly occurs in older people. Treatment was once limited to wet compresses and aspirin. Today's treatments provide a variety of ways to shorten the duration of a shingles outbreak and to control the associated pain. Sometimes, however, shingles leads to a chronic painful condition called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) that can be difficult to treat.
Initial Symptoms
After an attack of chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus retreats to nerve cells in the body, where it may lie dormant for decades. But under certain conditions, usually related to aging or disease, the virus can reactivate and begin to reproduce. Once activated, the virus travels along the path of a nerve to the skin's surface, where it causes shingles. Shingles' symptoms may be vague and nonspecific at first. People with shingles may experience numbness, tingling, itching, or pain before the classic rash appears. In the pre-eruption stage, diagnosis may be difficult, and the pain can be so severe that it may be mistaken for pleurisy, kidney stones, gallstones, appendicitis, or even a heart attack, depending on the location of the affected nerve.

Manufacturers of exterior finish and wood preservative for use on log homes, wood siding and shingles.
http://www.woodguards.com/
Tips for protecting your Woods Heat, Humidity and Hardwoods Did you know that up to half the weight of freshly sawn wood is water? Furniture is crafted from wood that is carefully dried, retaining just enough moisture for the furniture to properly acclimate to the relative humidity in your home. The wood in furniture continues to exchange moisture with the air, shrinking and expanding in response to changes in relative humidity. Like your own skin, solid hardwood furniture's natural response to extremely dry air is to lose moisture and shrink a bit The halves of an extension table may part slightly or a few tiny openings may appear on a solid wood surface. This will correct itself as the relative humidity rises, and the wood absorbs enough moisture to expand slightly. On the other hand, if you don't have an air conditioner or dehumidifier, your home's relative humidity may get too high. Parts of your wood furniture may absorb excess moisture from the air and expand, perhaps causing drawers to stick. Once again, this will correct itself as your home's relative humidity decreases. The furniture's quality and sturdiness are not affected by these natural changes.

Chicken Pox/Shingles What is chicken pox?
Chicken pox is a common disease caused by the varicella zoster virus which is a member of the herpes virus family. It is very contagious and usually occurs during childhood. Adults can get the disease if they did not have it in childhood. What are the symptoms? Chicken pox most often begins with a slight fever, body aches and loss of appetite. Within 1-2 days, the rash appears usually starting on the chest or back. Initially the rash begins as red spots which then rapidly form blisters and spreads to the rest of the body. The blisters open and form a crust or scab within a few days. The rash can continue to break out for 4-5 days as older lesions crust and heal. Itching can accompany the rash along with fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat and general body aches. It is unusual to have chicken pox more than once. Is chicken pox contagious? Chicken pox is contagious through direct contact with the fluid in the blisters and by airborne droplets that are inhaled. Incubation period is 7-21 days. A person is contagious from 1-2 days before the rash appears and until all the lesions form crusts.

Back to: Product Reviews Recycled Synthetic Roofing Shingles from Volume 9, Number 5 May 2000 This article was originally published in Environmental Building News , the leading newsletter on environmentally responsible design and construction; subscribe and read more! Synthetic Roofing Shingle Producers Recycled synthetic shingles that resemble slate or cedar shakes are becoming popular among people interested in maintaining vernacular regional styles or the historical integrity of buildings. These recycled rubber and plastic shingles offer an alternative to high-end roofing materials such as cedar shingles and shakes, natural slate, clay or concrete tiles, and standing seam metal roofs. There are currently four producers with established distribution networks offering six different products in a range of colors and shapes.
Source: EcoStar, Inc. Recycled synthetic Majestic slate has a life expectancy greater than 50 years. EcoStar manufactures Majestic, made of Starloy, a proprietary polymer composed of synthetic rubber and recycled industrial plastic from manufacturers of car hoses, shoes, tires, and several other rubber products. Starloy was invented in Canada 25 years ago and has been continually refined; it has a number of uses in construction, including docks and walkway pads. EcoStar is also North American distributor for EuroSLATE produced by Euro-Bati, based in Belgium. EuroSLATE contains 60% recycled content, is lighter than the Majestic, and has the square dimensions of a European-style slate.

Herpes Zoster Herpes zoster, also known as shingles or zoster, is a viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. Anyone who's had chicken pox can develop herpes zoster. The virus remains dormant or inactive in certain nerve root cells of the body and only when it reactivates does zoster occur. About 20 percent of those people who have had chicken pox will get zoster at some time during their lives. Fortunately, most people will get zoster only once. It is not clear what prompts the virus to reactivate or "awaken" in healthy people. A temporary weakness in immunity (the body's ability to fight infection) may allow the virus to multiply and move along nerve fibers toward the skin. Although children can get zoster, it is more common in people over the age 50. Illness, trauma and stress may also trigger a zoster attack. People with a weakened immunity for any reason are more prone to develop zoster. They are also more likely to have a serious form of it. Diseases that weaken immunity include cancers, such as leukemia or lymphoma, and AIDS. Some medical treatments including chemotherapy or radiation for cancer, drugs taken to prevent rejection of transplanted organs, and cortisone pills or injections taken for a long time for any reason, may also lower immunity. What are the symptoms of zoster?
