Heralded as the heir apparent to the great Greg Lemond, Lance Armstrong stunned the bicycling and sports world with his revelation in Oct 1996 that he had Testicular Cancer..... Of course, we now know that Lance came back to beat his cancer and win the Tour de France in 1999, 2000 and 2001! This interview was done only a few short months after he finished his chemotherapy and the future was far less certain... Click Here for Up to Date Links! Archived Info:

I met world class cyclist Lance Armstrong at his home in Austin on a bright Texas day...like me, he had recently finished up his surgical and chemo treatments and it appeared that we were having a hair growing racehe was slightly winning! He appeared in fine health and spirits and was very down to earth to talk to. Over lunch we discussed his Testicular Cancer (TC) experience and subsequent treatments, as well as his newly created cancer foundation and upcoming charity bike ride "The Race for the Roses" March 23d, 1997 TCRC - You've said that you knew something was wrong 3 years before you got diagnosed with TCwhy did you wait so long?

Testicular cancer is a rare disease in men caused by abnormal growth of cells of the testicle. The testicles (or testes) are located inside the scrotum, the loose bag of skin that hangs below the penis. What causes testicular cancer and who is at risk? The causes of testicular cancer are unknown, but men born with an undescended testicle (one that remains in the abdominal cavity rather than descending into the scrotum) may be at greater risk of developing the disease. There are several types of testicular cancer. The most common are seminoma and teratoma. Seminomas are made up of a single type of cell, whereas teratomas consist of more than one type of testicular cell. Occasionally, the growth can consist of seminoma and teratoma. Other types of testicular cancer such as lymphoma, arise from lymphatic tissue (tissue that forms part of the immune system) within the testis and are extremely rare. Cancer of the testicles most often affects men aged between 15 and 35 years. While it is not a common cancer overall (being responsible for less than one per cent of all cancer deaths), it is one of the most common cancers affecting men in this age group. It is important for men to be aware of the disease and examine themselves regularly because, if caught early, testicular cancer can usually be treated and cured.

Testicular Cancer Treatments: The Inguinal Orchiectomy
So, you've been diagnosed with testicular cancer...and if that's not bad enough, they want to cut your testicle off, and they want to do it NOW ! Hopefully, this article will explain what they are going to do and why they are going to do it. First of all, if you've got a testicular tumor, you need this operation. We're sure you are thinking things like:
  • Can't they do some more tests? How do they know it's really cancer? Why aren't they doing a biopsy Can't they just remove the tumor and leave the rest of the testicle alone?
Well, these are all very good questions, and we'll try to answer them as best as we can. Can't they do more tests? - Most Urologists are going to suspect cancer simply by feeling the afflicted testicle; however, there are other tests they will do to verify the diagnosis. They may try things like transillumination (shine a very bright light through the testicle) in order to rule out a benign cyst , but it is more likely, though, that they will order an ultrasound . The ultrasound is very good at detecting testicular tumors. In time, other tests will be necessary, but if the ultrasound indicates a tumor, then it is most likely that the testicle has to come out.

: What IS a Turkey Breasticle Festival, you say?

A couple of years ago, a group of friends read in a local newspaper article about a Turkey Testicle Festival that is annually held around Thanksgiving in Northern Illinois.
These happy-go-lucky friends attempted to attend this event however; they were disappointed to find out that this event had SOLD OUT their tickets, weeks in advance.
This did not discourage the band of Turkey Testicle Fest folk! Lo and behold! A local watering hole would be hosting a “Turkey Festival” Thanksgiving weekend! This bevy of friends paraded to the establishment and, to their disgust noticed a sign that read: “Turkey testicles – 3/$1.00”...
...THIS was the festival! The group vowed to each other that evening that THEY could a host a much better event!!! As the months passed, the wheels were set in motion.
“Rather than making this a party event, let’s make this a fundraising event for Breast Cancer and Testicular Cancer patients!!” Hence, Turkey Breasticle Festival ’99 was born. Read More...

Testicular Cancer Home Cancer Types Testicular Cancer Testicular cancer is most common cancer in men between 15 to 35 years old. There are two broad types: seminoma and nonseminoma histologies. The nonseminoma group of cancers includes embryonal carcinoma, teratoma, yolk sac carcinoma and choriocarcinoma. The two testicles (or testis) produce sperm and male hormones. Men who have an undescended testicle (a testicle that didn't move down into the scrotum) are at higher risk of developing testicular cancer. World-wide about 36,000 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer each year.

The Testicular Cancer Resource Center and the
Association of Cancer Online Resources
are pleased to offer TC-NET and TC-SUPPORTERS Two online email support groups designed to make it easy for you to communicate with other survivors, patients, caregivers, and generally anyone who is interested in testicular cancer.
TC-NET is the primary testicular cancer email support group. The list usually has somewhere between 400 and 450 subscribers. Many people on the list have been on it for years, but many others only stay online during the period between diagnosis and the end of treatment. Any topic related to testicular or extragonadal germ cell tumors is welcome, but this list does tend to be slightly more medical and treatment related than the other list. On average, the list generates 20-25 emails a day, less on weekends. There are two basic ways to subscribe to TC-NET: The recommend method for joining the list it to use the web interface located here . This interface is simple to use and makes it much easier to configure the list the way you want it. The default settings are appropriate for most people, but if you feel that 20-25 emails a day are too much, then change the subscription type to digest. When digest delivery is enabled, the email list will collect all of the emails from the group and send them to you in a single message once or twice a day. You will get a welcome message from TC-NET soon after, confirming your subscription and telling you about using an email service. Unless you have an ACOR password, you will have to reply to the confirmation in order to complete the subscription process.

If you would like to make a donation to assist us in our work, click here Understanding cancer of the testes From the CancerBACUP booklet series What causes testicular cancer? It is not known exactly what causes testicular cancer. Although it is still quite rare, the number of men who develop it has been steadily increasing for the past few years. The reason for this is not known, but research is going on all the time into possible causes. Testicular cancer is more common in men who have a testicle which has failed to descend. In the unborn child the testicles develop inside the abdomen between the kidneys and descend into the scrotum at birth or during the first year of life. If they move down later, or need surgery to bring them down, this increases the risk of testicular cancer. Men with a brother or father who has had testicular cancer are more at risk of developing it (although the risk is still small). A particular gene has been found in some men with testicular cancer. It is possible that this gene is inherited and may be the reason why testicular cancer sometimes occurs in brothers or sons of men who have had the disease.

Male reproductive anatomy Male reproductive system Alternative names Return to top Cancer - testes; Germ cell tumor; Seminoma; Teratoma Definition Return to top Testicular cancer is an abnormal, rapid, and invasive growth of cancerous (malignant) cells in the testicles (male sex glands adjacent to the penis). Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Although the exact cause of testicular cancer has not been identified, several predisposing factors seem to increase risk. These include a past medical history of undescended testicle(s), abnormal testicular development, Klinefelter's syndrome (a sex chromosome disorder that may be characterized by low levels of male hormones, sterility, breast enlargement, and small testes), or previous testicular cancer.
Other factors are under investigation as possible causes, such as exposure to certain chemicals and infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A family history of testicular cancer may increase risk. There is no link between vasectomy (an operation to cause sterility) and elevated risk of testicular cancer. Between 6,000 and 8,000 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancers each year. Although testicular cancer accounts for 1% of all cancers in men, it is the most common form of cancer in young men 15 to 40 years old. It may also occur in young boys, but only about 3% of all testicular cancer is found in this group. White American men have about five times the risk of African-American men and more than twice the risk of Asian-American men. The risk for testicular cancer has doubled among white Americans in the past 40 years but has remained the same for African-Americans. The reasons for these differences are not known.
