    Converting Energy to Medical Progress
    Doctors Rely on Nuclear Medicine
To Help Many Types of Patients
N uclear medicine is an exciting field in healthcare that provides important information for diagnosing, evaluating, and managing disease.Virtually all hospitals, as well as many clinics and private doctors' offices, perform nuclear medicine tests and scans. About 13 million nuclear medicine procedures are performed on patients each year (35,000 a day) in the United States. Previous research, carried out from the 1940s through the 1990sfunded by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER)made it possible for today's doctors to rely on nuclear medicine to help patients. These photographs represent several types of patients who benefit every day from clinical nuclear medicine procedures. Nuclear medicine truly helps patients "everywhere in healthcare"and so does BER Medical Sciences through its 50-year legacy of nuclear medicine research.
    Cardiology: Patients with Heart Disease
Nuclear medicine provides several ways to evaluate heart disease. Heart scans can show whether certain regions of the heart muscle lack an adequate supply of blood, which can help cardiologists decide whether a patient needs angioplasty, bypass surgery, or changes in lifestyle. Images that show metabolic activity can help predict the success of these revascularization procedures. Other nuclear medicine tests can evaluate the strength of heart muscle contraction.

A PDF version of this document is available. Download PDF now (8 pages / 163 KB). More information on using PDF files. A thyroid nodule is a palpable swelling in a thyroid gland with an otherwise normal appearance. Thyroid nodules are common and may be caused by a variety of thyroid disorders. While most are benign, about 5 percent of all palpable nodules are malignant. Many tests and procedures are available for evaluating thyroid nodules, and appropriate selection of tests is important for accurate diagnosis. Family physicians should have a cost-effective method of differentiating between nodules that are malignant and those that will have a benign course. This article provides a method for the outpatient evaluation and treatment of thyroid nodules. While most are benign, about 5 percent of all palpable thyroid nodules are malignant.

T hyroid diseases are more prevalent than all other endocrine diseases combined, with the exception of diabetes mellitus. In the United States, approximately 7.5 percent of the population (about 1 in every 13 individuals) have been diagnosed with thyroid disorders, and nearly another 1 percent are estimated to have undiagnosed thyroid maladies. The most common thyroid diseases are autoimmune in nature. Over time, the autoimmune process causes the thyroid to become either overactive hyperthyroidism or underactive hypothyroidism . Autoimmunity is an abnormal state in which the immune system fails to distinguish between what is an invading foreign threat and what are components of organs within the body itself. Antibodies and cell-mediated immunity can cause abnormalities and destruction of targeted host tissues and organs such as the thyroid gland. The prevalence of autoimmune diseases is greater among women than among men. The risk of thyroid disorders among women with either a personal or family history of autoimmune diseases (type 1 diabetes, Addison's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, pernicious anemia, etc.) has been estimated to be as high as 25 percent. Postpartum thyroiditis is a transient thyroid disorder that usually appears within 12 month after giving birth, particularly among women who are predisposed to autoimmune disorders.

My Child has a Thyroid Disorder My daughter Charli was born in October of 1994. She was full term, seemingly healthy, and absolutely beautiful. Little did I know, this little bundle of joy would turn my whole life around. Being the mother of 3 then, I surely knew it all, or so I thought...
Since then I've learned a wealth of information about this disorder. The fact is, it's not just a pill a day. There is so much to know and such little time to do it. Our window of opportunity to ensure proper growth and development for our children is very small. Unfortunately, for my child, I couldn't learn what I needed to know fast enough to help her get through this unscathed.
Now I'm able to help other parents like myself, by offering parent support and information on Thyroid Disorders in Children...

    Congenital Hypothyroidism
This is a disorder that affects infants from birth (congenital), resulting from the loss of thyroid function (hypothyroidism), normally due to failure of the thyroid gland to develop correctly. Sometimes the thyroid gland is absent, or ectopic (in an abnormal location). As a result, the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroxine/T4 after birth. Without prompt and proper treatment this may result in abnormal growth and development, as well as slower mental function.

Home Publications What is an Endocrinologist?
An endocrinologist is a specially trained doctor. Endocrinologists diagnose diseases that affect your glands. They know how to treat these conditions, which are often complex and involve many systems and structures within your body. Your regular doctor refers you to an endocrinologist when you have a problem with your endocrine system.
    What is the endocrine system?
Your endocrine system is a system of glands. Glands are organs that make hormones. These are substances that help to control activities in your body. Hormones control reproduction, metabolism (food burning and waste elimination), and growth and development. Hormones also control the way you respond to your surroundings. They help to provide the proper amount of energy and nutrition. The endocrine glands include the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes, adrenal, pituitary and hypothalamus.
