Lori played by Sharon Stone Lori in the beginning of the film is introuduced as the wife of Douglas Quaid. In reality she just pretends to be Douglas's wife as part of a plan to make Quaid become a new person than he was before. Lori's true husband is Richter. When Lori is killed Richter makes it his mission to track Quaid down. Melina played by Rachel Ticotin Melina is the female that Douglas Quaid travels throughout Mars with as part of what he thinks is his Recall generated vacation. Melina is athletic and fits the type that Douglas Quaid told Recall staff he preferred. Melina helps Quaid elude the men of Mr. Cohaagen and ultimately helps Douglas Quaid find an ancient alien air making machine on mars.

Types of amnesia
An inability to recall information that is stored in the memory is called amnesia. There are three types of memory affected by amnesia including immediate memory, intermediate memory and long term memory. When the immediate memory is affected the person will have difficulty recalling the events that occurred in the preceding few seconds. Intermediate memory is affected when a person cannot recall events that happened from within a few seconds to a few days prior to the cause of the amnesia. With long term memory loss a person will be unable to recall events that occurred further back in time. bodyOffer(19159) In most cases the memory is divided into short and long term. When there is damage or disease present in the area of the brain regions that are concerned with memory functions, amnesia occurs. There are several known causes of this type of damage including injuries to the head, degenerative disorders, infections such as encephalitis, thiamine deficiencies such as that found in Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, brain tumors, strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhage and some psychiatric illnesses. There are different types of amnesia that can affect a person including transient global amnesia, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, Korsakoff's amnesia, retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia. The prognosis for transient global amnesia is good with the confusion quickly clearing up and a total recovery. With Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome patients are given thiamine intravenously to correct the problem. With Korsakoff's amnesia the administration of thiamine has been known to correct encephalopathy but not the amnesia. In some cases where alcohol is avoided and the illnesses that are contributing to the amnesia are treated this condition may gradually disappear. Other forms of amnesia may last for minutes or hours and then disappear without treatment. But in cases where severe brain injury has caused the amnesia, it could be permanent. Since the memory tends to be involved with many different brain functions, literally any type of brain damage is capable of causing a loss of memory.

L-25 Memory Systems I. Kinds of memory ( Fig. 23.1
A. Declarative memory = explicit memory - memory for facts or events
Short-term memory - temporary, limited in capacity, requires continual rehearsal
Long-term memory - more permanent, much greater capacity, does not require
continual rehearsal
Consolidation - transfer from short-term memory to long-term memory
B. Nondeclarative memory = implicit memory
Procedural memory
- memory for skills or behavior
C. Working memory - temporary information storage that includes several types of
information, probably from several sites in the brain
Spatial memory - memory of location Relational memory - all things that happen at same time get stored together in a manner that ties them together D. That there are several different types of memory suggests different strategies/places may be used by the brain for different kinds of memory II. Amnesia - loss of memory and/or the ability to learn A. Causes - concussion, chronic alcoholism, encephalitis, brain tumor, stroke B. Dissociated amnesia - not associated with any other cognitve deficits
