27. Fuzzy Logic: What Is Fuzzy Logic?
fuzzy logic emerged into the mainstream of information technology in the late1980's and early 1990's. Additional Introductory Material on fuzzy logic.
http://www.emsl.pnl.gov:2080/proj/neuron/fuzzy/what.html
Many decision-making and problem-solving tasks are too complex to be understood quantitatively, however, people succeed by using knowledge that is imprecise rather than precise. Fuzzy set theory, originally introduced by Lotfi Zadeh in the 1960's, resembles human reasoning in its use of approximate information and uncertainty to generate decisions. It was specifically designed to mathematically represent uncertainty and vagueness and provide formalized tools for dealing with the imprecision intrinsic to many problems. By contrast, traditional computing demands precision down to each bit. Since knowledge can be expressed in a more natural by using fuzzy sets, many engineering and decision problems can be greatly simplified.

LEARNING AND SOFT COMPUTING
Vojislav KECMAN
The MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 2001
ISBN 0-262-11255-8
608 pp., 268 illus.,
$US60.00/£41.50 (Hardcover)
This is the first textbook that provides a thorough, comprehensive and unified introduction to the field of learning from experimental data and soft computing. Support vector machines (SVMs) and neural networks (NNs) are the mathematical structures, or models, that underlie learning, while fuzzy logic systems (FLS) enable us to embed structured human knowledge into workable algorithms. The book assumes that it is not only useful, but necessary, to treat SVMs, NNs, and FLS as parts of a connected whole. The theory and algorithms are illustrated by 47 practical examples, as well as by 155 problem sets and simulated experiments. This approach enables the reader to develop SVMs, NNs, and FLS in addition to understanding them. The book also presents three case studies on: NNs based control, financial time series analysis, and computer graphics.
A solutions manual and all of the MATLAB programs needed for the simulated experiments are available.

32. A Fuzzy Fairly Happy Face
Notes from a talk by Patrick Grim on applying fuzzy logic to the Sorites Paradox.
http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/dept/philo/faculty/sorensen/vagueness/fuzzy.htm
A Fuzzy Fairly Happy Face
as presented for the Vagueness Group
CUNY, May 1997 Patrick Grim
Group for Logic and Formal Semantics
Philosophy
SUNY at Stony Brook I was asked to outline a fuzzy logic approach to the sorites. What's good about this approachwhat makes it a fairly happy face, in my view, is this. It starts with two simple claims about our language that I think just have to be right. On the basis of essentially those two claims alone it offers what I think is a very plausible account of both (1) what really is wrong with the argument and (2) why there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the argument. What makes it only a fairly happy face are difficulties that arise at a second levelat the level of trying to elaborate the basic claims about our language within a more complete and more formal semantics. Here there are some serious problems. I have some suggestions to make at that level, on which I'll want to hear your views. But for starters I just want to insist on this as a second level of inquiry. I think there is an intuitive fuzzy approach to the sorites that has a great deal of plausibility. But there are some difficulties in trying to formalize a fuzzy semantics adequate to that approach.

37. Fuzzy Logic: Product Information
Mathematica software for creating fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic based systems. BrianCogan, Scientific Computing World (November/December 2001). About fuzzy logic.
http://www.wolfram.com/products/applications/fuzzylogic/
Overview Features Sample Images Contents Buy Online ... Fuzzy Logic
The Most Flexible Environment for Exploring This Emerging New Field
Note: Fuzzy Logic is compatible with Mathematica 2.2 only. Fuzzy Logic brings you an essential set of tools for creating, modifying, and visualizing fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic-based systems. Ideal for engineers, researchers, and educators, the practical examples provided introduce you to basic concepts of fuzzy logic and demonstrate how to effectively apply the tools in the package to a wide variety of fuzzy system design tasks. Experienced fuzzy logic designers will find it easy to use the package to research, model, test, and visualize highly complex systems. The package's built-in functions help you at every stage of the fuzzy logic design process as you define inputs and outputs, create fuzzy set membership functions, manipulate and combine fuzzy sets and relations, apply inferencing functions to system models, and incorporate defuzzification routines. Ready-to-use graphics routines make it easy to visualize defuzzification strategies, fuzzy sets, and fuzzy relations.
"Wolfram Research's usual care and attention has resulted in an easy to use, comprehensive and robust set of utilities. The presentation of the commands in the context of solved problems, the excellent graphical output, and the ease of use of this package should make it of great interest to teachers and students of fuzzy logic."

PARALLEL PROGRAMMING
Parallel Programming consists in speeding-up the execution of a program by dividing the program into multiple fragments that can execute simultaneously, each on its own processor. A program being executed across N processors might execute N times faster than it would using a single processor. The efficiency and effectiveness of the parallelism are largely dependent on the problems to be solved with selected algorithms and hardware architectures.
