what [Boolean vs. Fuzzy] ... [Fuzzy Operations] Abstract
In the movie 2001:A Space Odyssey , Stanley Kubrick predicted how fast the computer technology would grow, by introducing the mainframe HAL, a "smart" computer with the ability to think and learn. Though, it is highly unlikely, that 5 years from now, man would have created HAL, one thing is for sure, it will eventually come from Japan. Why? Because of a very simple little thing in which the Japanese have adapted for decades; the Americans sweating to catch up;- fuzzy logic. This article introduces fuzzy logic, from a mathematics perspective, tracing its origins, stating its characteristics and finally illustrating with examples, its set theories and logic operations. Fuzzy what
Fuzzy logic is a superset of conventional(Boolean) logic that has been extended to handle the concept of partial truth- truth values between "completely true" and "completely false". As its name suggests, it is the logic underlying modes of reasoning which are approximate rather than exact. The importance of fuzzy logic derives from the fact that most modes of human reasoning and especially common sense reasoning are approximate in nature. Boolean vs. Fuzzy

About Fuzzy Logic
Fuzzy logic, invented by Professor Lotfi Zadeh of UC-Berkeley in the mid-1960s, provides a representation scheme and a calculus for dealing with vague or uncertain concepts. It provides for the facile manipulation of such terms as "large," "warm," and "fast," which can simultaneously be seen to belong partially to two or more different, contradictory sets of values. Zadeh originally devised the technique as a means for solving problems in the soft sciences, particularly those that involved interactions between humans, and/or between humans and machines. Within the United States, with some exceptions, the technique has remained mainly of basic research interest.
Current and Future Activities
Terano and his colleagues now view fuzzy control as but the first way station on the road to human-friendly systems. The evolution is fuzzy control, to fuzzy expert systems, to intelligent robots, to integrated AI systems. The 1992 LIFE research plan shows work in two main areas: communication and machine intelligence. Under communication, LIFE is conducting research in fuzzy computing (including natural language and linguistic modeling applications) and intelligent interfaces (to both humans and robots). Under machine intelligence, LIFE is pursuing work in fuzzy associative memory (software only), image understanding, and intelligent robots (the scope of which was left vague in our discussions). A total of about 30 full-time researchers are involved in all of these efforts.

White Paper: Fuzzy Logic in Knowledge Builder
Rule based logic has been used to capture human expertise in classification, assessment, diagnostic and planning tasks. Probability has traditionally been used to capture decision making under uncertain conditions. For example, consider the rule: IF Symptom-A is present THEN diagnosis is illness-X There will be situations in which we are uncertain about the presence of Symptom-A. In such cases we can enter the probability of Symptom-A being present which will result in a confidence factor in our diagnosis of illness-X. A number of methods have been used to propagate probabilities during rule based inference. Many of these techniques are based on the probabilistic inference techniques used in Mycin and Prospector . The weakness of such techniques is that they do not reflect the way human experts reason under uncertainty. XpertRule Knowledege Builder allows an alternative methodology to the probabilistic reasoning approach. This involves defining Symptom-A and illness-X as logical attribute with values

A Classified Review on the Combination Fuzzy Logic-Genetic Algorithms Bibliography. Technical Report DECSAI-95129, Dept. of Computer Science and A.I., University of Granada, November 1995 (Last version December 1996, 544 references). (35 pages) (Full paper)
ABSTRACT
We present a classified review of the bibliography on the combination genetic algorithms-fuzzy logic. The classification is made in order to join the papers that make reference to a specific fuzzy logic area.
CLASSIFIED REVIEW INFORMATION
Recentely, numerous papers and applications combining fuzzy logic (FL) and genetic algorithms (GAs) have become known, and there is an increasing interest in the integration of these two topics. The present bibliography collects a big set of references in this growing area, althought unfortunatelly they are not all the possible. The references marked by don't belong to our paper collection, obtaining them from the references of other publications or by authors. Some of the references are incomplete because either we have earlier versions before to be published or we have got them incomplete. Comments, corrections, papers and references for mantaining the file are welcome.
