Hi
I'm looking for any kind of solution to display mathematical formulas (or just being able to display mathematical signs) within a html document.
We have considered building a small dictionary that dynamically will replace code (like $sqroot) and insert small GIF's instead. Perhaps this is already done somewhere? Or you might now any source that focuses on this issue. All hints are very welcome! Greg's grain of truth: a mathematical proof is relatively easy when one knows what is to be proved. I rephrase Hartmut's statement: A patent on an invention in the realm of applied natural science is valid until the day when someone has mathematically deduced it from prior knowledge in a cheap process that does not benefit from knowledge of the patented material. But this rule may not exclude all software patents, since proving

Math Formulas Continued Back to page 1 Part, over Base times Rate ; also called Result, over Base times Rate; also called the “Pie Formula” or the “T Formula” (It’s all the same thing), can be used in a variety of circumstances. If you know any two of the three pieces in the formula, you can figure out the one you’re missing. For example, in Commission problems (shown at the right), the Sale Price times the Commission Rate would give you the Commission (the actual dollar amount paid by the seller. The Commission divided by the Commission Rate would give you the Sale Price, and the Commission divided by the Sale Price would give you the rate in decimals (you then need to move the decimal point two places to the right to convert it to a percentage). For Commission problems, the formula would be: Commission Sale Price X Commission Rate To figure the share received by a salesperson or by another broker use: Salesperson’s or Other Broker’s Share Total Commission X Percentage To figure the amount received by the seller after paying the commission use: Seller’s Net Sale Price X (100% – Commission Rate) For Tax problems , the formula would be: Annual Tax Assessed Value X Tax Rate Remember the rate will be expressed in Mills (1 Mill = .001, 50 mills would be .050, and so on).

50. Steve's Crazy Math Formulas
I was a math major. This one was created AFTER i left kutztown so don't go thinkingthat kutztown is some kind of a mecca for creative math people.
http://www.leroybrown.com/math.html
This little formula does absolutely nothing (that i know of).
Actually, I do... it all started way back at Kutztown University . I was a math major. Then I realized that computers were more my thing. One day I was screwing around with some numbers and came upon this little formula (actually, I just found the pattern). Four years later, Dr. Thang Bui from Penn State Harrisburg helped me get the formula into an explainable format.
Basically, what the formula says is this:
  • take an arbitrary n
  • take n+1 (k) positive consecutive integers
  • take those integers to the power n
  • subtract the lesser from the greater going down the column, forming a new column
  • this should leave you with a column containing one less element than before
  • keep doing this until you get one number (a total of n columns of subtraction)
  • this number is n factorial (n!) Example: pick n = 3, n + 1 numbers (1, 2, 3, 4)
    k^3
the rightmost number is 6 which is 3!
if you were to continue this by adding 5^3 to the leftmost column and began subtracting in the same way, the answer after n columns of subtraction would still be 6. you can start at 1456 and the same thing would happen (1456, 1457, 1458, 1459).
this is also handy for showing that 0! = 1 (although NOT a proof!)

    52. Math Formulas
Some math formulas worth knowing. Quadratic Formulas. Y=AX^2+BX+C. A can't equalzero. AX^2 is the quadratic term, bx the linear, and c is the constant.
    http://www.geocities.com/cmdrsimon/mathform.html
Some Math Formulas worth knowing Quadratic Formulas Y=AX^2+BX+C A can't equal zero. AX^2 is the quadratic term, bx the linear, and c is the constant. About 350 yrs ago, Rene Descartes introduced the idea of plotting this equation on a (X,Y) grid co-ordinate system. When Y equals zero, the graph line would cross the x-axis. X= -b(+or-)SQR(b^2-4ac)
This formula helps to solve X if you know what a, b, and c is. Financial Formulas A=P(1+R/N)^(N*T) This is a compound interest formula where P is the Principle, R is the rate of interest, T is the time in years, and N is the number of times interest is calculated. (For example, if interest is calculated quarterly, then N would be 4. If it's monthly, then N would be 12, and so on.) A is the amount of money you get. Triangle Formulas a^2+b^2=c^2
Where a equals a leg, and b equals another leg of a triangle. C=the hypotenuse of the triangle. This formula only works with right triangles. My opinion? Forget this formula and use the Cosine Law instead. This is the Pythagorus Theorem. a^2=b^2+c^2-2bc * cosA
    b^2=a^2+c^2-2ac * cosB
    c^2=a^2+b^2-2ab * cosC
This is the Cosine Law. Look how similar it is to the P. Theorem formula. The -2xy * CosZ part is to take into account the fact that is not a right triangle. That part is equal to zero, when it is a right triangle, hence the P. Theorem comes into play.

There are three environments that put LaTeX in math mode: math, displaymath, and equation. The math environment is for formulas that appear right in the text. The displaymath environment is for formulas that appear on their own line. The equation environment is the same as the displaymath environment except that it adds an equation number in the right margin. The math environment can be used in both paragraph and LR mode, but the displaymath and equation environments can be used only in paragraph mode. The math and displaymath environments are used so often that they have the following short forms: Prostøedí math lze pou¾ít jak v obou odstavcových módech, tak i v LR módu; narozdíl od prostøedí displaymath a equation, která mohou být pou¾ita jen v odstavcových módech. Èast¹ji se pou¾ívají prostøedí math a displaymath, proto¾e je lze zapsat zkrácenou formou:
