Some rules of thumb for remembering measurement units LENGTH 12 inches = 1 foot 3 feet = 1 yard A meter is about 3 inches LONGER than a yard (3 feet) or about 39 inches (the height of a doorknob from the floor).

    Contents of Reviews
    A review of a mathematical work should give a brief and clear account of its contents. Reviewing papers in applied mathematics should concentrate on the mathematical aspects. Reading the review is not intended to be a substitute for reading the original paper; the primary purpose is to help the user to decide whether a he needs to read the original. The reviewer has, in principle, no responsability of checking the correctness or novelty of the original, but if he does discover that it contains a significant error or that it overlaps significantly with other work, he should mention the fact. references to related work are always appreciated (see section citations below).
    Style and Format:
    Reviews should preferably be written in English . German or French will be accepted in exceptional cases. They should be expressed concisely and clearly and should conform to normal standarts of usage in the language chosen. A reader with a moderate knowledge of the language in question should be able to understand the review. In case of a translated title of the original, please check its correctness.

    Origami-Math Bibliography
    The intersection between the subjects of origami and mathematics is rich with interesting results and applications. It's also a field that's becoming more and more popular, especially the use of origami in math and science education. Unfortunately, there are very few general, all-around, "it's all here" references for the subject of origami-mathematics. The major sources in this subject are scattered throughout the mathematical and educational literature. Thus, I've tried to compile as complete a list of origami-math references as possible. If you know of any that I've missed, please let me know! Also, just because I list a reference here doesn't mean I have it! Many of the article and book references here were given to me by other people, and I haven't gotten around to finding them yet.
    Proceedings and Special Journal Issues
    A number of proceedings books resulting from origami conferences have been published, as well as a few special journal issues devoted to origami-math. Click on the title for a table of contents and information on obtaining copies.

We get questions about this frequently, so I did a little extra research to find the details beyond what's in our archives. Here's a page on the Web that tells about the origin of the words googol and googolplex: How Many? A Dictionary of Units of Measurement http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/units/dictG.html This says: "googol a unit of quantity equal to 10^100 (1 followed by 100 zeroes). The googol was invented by the American mathematician Edward Kasner (1878- 1955) in 1938. According to the story, Kasner asked his nephew Milton Sirotta, who was then 8 years old, what name he would give to a really large number, and "googol" was Milton's response. Kasner also defined the googolplex, equal to 10^googol, that is, 1 followed by a googol of zeroes.     My research: Central configurations in the n-body problem
    My primary areas of mathematics are, broadly speaking, dynamical systems and geometry. My thesis is in the field of celestial mechanics. It is on the concave central configurations of the 4-body problem. Central configurations can be thought of as generating self-similar solutions of the n-body problem, which is (classically, at least) the study of the dynamics of n point masses interacting according to Newtonian gravity.
    The three-body case was solved by Euler and Lagrange . Euler found that for any ordering of three collinear point masses there was a spacing of the masses making them a central configuration. Lagrange found that the only non-collinear three-body central configuration is the equilateral triangle, which is a central configuration for any three (positive) masses. Here's an animation of one of the solutions of Lagrange.

    Here's an animation of a concave 4-body central configuration . Its a typical example of the sort of central configuration that I have shown exists for any four (positive) masses.
    Papers and books related to my research:
    A good place to start is the book Celestial Encounters, by Florin Diacu and Philip Holmes. Newton's Clock: Chaos in the Solar System, by Ivars Peterson, is also a very good nontechnical book about celestial mechanics, although not as closely related to what I am working on.

      This is the bible. Definitions, properties, algorithms, generalizations and applications galore! Unfortunately, it retails for $180. The King County Library System has one copy. There are several copies scattered among academic libraries in the Pacific Northwest, which you can get on interlibrary loan.
      Computational Geometry in C by J. O'Rourke, Cambridge University Press, 1994.
      Nice senior-level treatment that includes several applications and describes how Voronoi diagrams are related to minimal spanning trees and traveling salesman problems. There is a brief discussion of the "cone slicing" interpretation of Voronoi diagrams. You don't have to know C (or any programming at all) to read this book.
      Computational Geometry: Algorithms and Applications by de Berg, van Kreveld, Overmars and Schwarzkopf, Springer-Verlag, 1997.
      High-level undergraduate or low-level graduate textbook. Limited, but readable, description of the structure of algorithms for computing Voroni diagrams. You can download the fifteen-page chapter on Voroni diagrams from a web site devoted to this book: http://www.cs.ruu.nl/geobook/
