amnesty international 40th anniversary 1961 - 2001
Timeline: Key Moments
  • British lawyer, Peter Benenson , launches an Appeal for Amnesty '61 with the publication of an article, "The Forgotten Prisoners" in The Observer newspaper, London on May 28th. The imprisonment of two Portuguese students who had raised their wine glasses in a toast to freedom moved Benenson to write this article which proved to be the genesis of Amnesty International (AI). The appeal was reprinted in other papers across the world. In July, first international meeting with delegates from Belgium, UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland and United States decides to establish "a permanent international movement in defence of freedom of opinion and religion. An Office and library staffed by volunteers opens in Mitre Court, London. "Threes Network" established whereby each AI group adopted three prisoners from contrasting geographical and political areas, thus emphasizing impartiality of the group's work. First AI groups founded in the UK, West Germany, Holland, France, Italy and Switzerland.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner to Address Human Rights
PRINCETON, N.J. Jose Ramos-Horta, 1996 Nobel Peace Prize winner, will speak at Princeton University on Monday, November 9, at 8 p.m. in McCosh 50. He will discuss "Human Rights: Democracy and the Rule of Law in the Asia Pacific Region." Ramos-Horta has spent his life working for human rights in East Timor, a country from which he has been in exile for speaking out against human rights violations there. In 1996, he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo. Both were honored for their "sustained efforts to hinder oppression of a small people," hoping that "this will spur efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict of East Timor based on the people's right to self-determination." In addition to his continued work for human rights in East Timor, Ramos-Horta is now working with Oscar Arias on an International Code of Conduct in Arms Transfers, which will obligate governments who wish to purchase arms to uphold internationally recognized standards of democracy, human rights, and peaceful international relations. This event has been organized by the University chapter of Amnesty International, a worldwide organization working for the human rights of all people. Additional support has been provided by the Amnesty International Mercer County Group #67, Princeton University, the Undergraduate Student Government, Amnesty International USA, the Felix Spielman Memorial Fund, and the Africa World Press/Red Sea Press.

"The continued imprisonment of between 1200 - 1300 political prisoners, many of whom we believe are prisoners of conscience, held solely for their peaceful political activities, was one of the key issues discussed with the local authorities," Amnesty International said during a press conference held today in Bangkok, Thailand. The organization, which had been requesting access to Myanmar since 1988, welcomed the efforts made by the government officials in Myanmar to accommodate the delegation's requests and the frank discussions it held with Ministers, police and prison officials. During the visit, Amnesty International's delegation also met with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi - in her capacity as General Secretary of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and with members and supporters of the NLD. The delegates talked to representatives of various international organizations and the diplomatic and business communities as well as visiting detention facilities, including Insein Prison in Yangon and the Guard Ward at the Yangon General Hospital.

Cgil, Cisl and Uil, the main Italian trade-unions, dedicate the Labour Day Concert to Amnesty International, one of the leading organizations for Human Rights, free from every political and economical influence, Nobel prize for Peace in 1977. The three Italian trade-unions have been fighting together with Amnesty on several occasions to protect workers' human rights: in 1990 they released a report named 'Trade-Unions and Human Rights'.

A lot of money is being made out of suffering and death. There is a growing global trade in weapons and equipment like the electro-shock baton. International marketing and procurement networks are providing such technology to clients who often end up using them to torture and degrade.
Electro-shock stun batons are made and then sold world-wide to the public and to law enforcement agencies in the USA,Germany, China, Taiwan, France, Israel and South Africa. Suppliers have also been found in Brazil, Belgium, Canada, Japan, Iran, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Spain and the UK.
When Amnesty talks about Military, Security and Police Transfers - that is MSP - we mean the supply or trade of weapons, equipment, personnel, or relevant trainning by governments or companies.
MSP transfers to governments and non-governmental entities, reasonably assumed to contribute to human rights violations, should be stopped.

Amnesty Chester Group is campaigning for the release of Khin Maung Kyi, a Prisoner of Conscience in Burma (Myanmar). For an update on this campaign, dated 18 November 2002, - click here. He is a local politician and leading member of the National League for Democracry (NLD), the party led by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. This party won 60% of the votes in Burma's last free election, held in 1990. the Burmese military have refused to allow the NLD to form a government. In 1998 efforts by democracy activists to establish a "Committee Representing the People's Parliament" were met with a military clampdown. Hundreds of NLD members were detained. Khin Maung Kyi was arrested on his 50th birthday, on 8 September 1998. His wife and family were informed of the arrest only a month later. The following April he was subjected to a secret trial inside Insein Prison in Yangon (Rangoon) and sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for allegedly distributing anti-government pamphlets, containing "false" information. He was not allowed to appoint a defence lawyer. He is now in Thayet Prison, 250 miles from Yangon where his family live. Family visits to prisoners are only permitted for 15 minutes every fortnight. His health has deteriorated. Requests by his daughter that he be given medical attention have been turned down.
