April News Relea ses A mnesty International Director Will Speak April 18 at The U of M For release: April 2, 2001 For more information, contact Gabrielle Maxey The executive director of Amnesty International USA will discuss "Human Rights and the National Interest" at the Memphis World Affairs Council meeting Wednesday, April 18, at The University of Memphis. The lecture will be at 1 p.m. in the Psychology Building Auditorium. Dr. William F. Schulz, an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister, has been executive director of Amnesty International USA since 1994. He has been involved in numerous international and social justice causes. Schulz led the first visit by a member of the U.S. Congress to post-revolutionary Romania in January 1991, two weeks after the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu. The delegation was instrumental in improving the rights of religious and ethnic minorities in Romania. In 1992 Schulz visited India in consultation with the Holdeen India Fund, which is dedicated to ending communal violence and improving the political and economic status of women, bonded laborers and others.
