Angell, Norman, Sir Sir Norman Angell fonds. 1897-1966. 91 cm of textual records, photographs and graphic materials. Norman Angell, author, was born in the Mansion House, Holbeach, on 26 December 1872 and educated at Geneva University. Rather than going on to Cambridge, at age seventeen, he left for the United States, supporting himself by manual labour. He later became a journalist, working in San Francisco, before returning to Europe. From 1904 to 1912 he was the Paris editor of The Daily Mail . His 1910 influential book The Great Illusion , on the prevention of war, was very widely read and discussed. He was one of the founding members of the Union of Democratic Control. From 1929 to 1931 he served as Labour Member of Parliament for North Bradford. He was knighted in 1931 and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1933. He died in Croydon on 7 October 1967. There have been two accruals. The first accrual consists of correspondence, news, a few clippings and one manuscript. The second accrual consists of correspondence, manuscripts, news clippings, broadsides and posters, and photographs.

Angell, Sir Norman (1872-1967), British economist and pacifist, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1933. Born in England, in his youth Angell worked as a cowboy and prospector in the American West, and then as a reporter for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and the San Francisco Chronicle. During his stay in the United States, Angell was disturbed by the antipathy of the Americans toward Britain. He generalized that prejudicial attitudes on the part of society and the fallacious belief in the gains from war had a negative impact on international affairs. Angell developed his thesis in the book, The Great Illusion , published in 1910. The illusion is the mistaken idea that by success in a war a nation-state might destroy or incorporate the economic power of the enemy state and thus expand its own. Angell argued that national wealth in the modern world is so interdependent in terms of international finance and trade that military conquest could only destroy the very foundations of it. The inability to understand the economic interdependence and the effects of war fuels the self-destructive forces of militarism, challenging peace and prosperity. Angell's thesis has been subsequently challenged, but it had a great impact at the time. Angell also wrote other books on issues of peace and war. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1933 in recognition of the originality of his thought and the depth of his dedication to the cause of world peace. Angell was manager of the Paris edition of the London

One hundred years ago the arrival of the 20th century generated a surge of optimisma hope and belief that the next hundred years would bring, if not Utopia itself, at least a giant stride in that direction. At the time Andrew Carnegie, whom later generations would remember more as a philanthropist than as an industrialist, was moved to prophesy, "Ere the 20th century closes, the earth will be purged of its foulest shame, the killing by men in battle under the name of war." A decade later, British author Norman Angell predicted in The Great Illusion that since in the 20th century war was no longer rational, rational nations would no longer fight each other. "How," he mused, "can modern life . . . keep alive the instincts associated with war as against those developed by peace?" Angell's implied warning went unheeded, to be sure, and shortly afterward the first World War broke out. He issued it again in 1933, after he had spent three years (1928-1931) as editor of
