Biography
Samuel Beckett

Playwright Ireland Born 13 Apr 1906
Died 22 Dec 1989
Beckett was born in Dublin and educated at Trinity College. From 1932 he lived mostly in France, and wrote in both French and English. In Paris he became the friend of the Irish novelist James Joyce whose 'stream of consciousness' strongly influenced Beckett's own writings.
Beckett's themes express the desolation of European culture, and his view of the absurdity of life is expressed through images which are both bleak and comic. In the play 'Happy Days' Winnie appears on stage buried up to her waist in a mound of soil; in 'Not I' the audience sees only a mouth on stage trying to deliver a monologue of reminiscences. In 'Endgame' two elderly characters are placed in dustbins throughout the play.
Becket is the only Nobel prize winner to have played first-class cricket. An opening left-hand batsman and left-arm medium pace bowler, his first-class experience was limited to two games both against Northamptonshire, one as an opening batsman and bowler, for Dublin University. His highest score was 18 and he had a Beckettian analysis of no wickets for 64 runs.

Impressive debut release on this new German label. "'... the whole thing's coming out of the dark', it was Samuel Beckett who used this term about the origin and quality of his radio plays. The recordings in this production provide an impressive documentation of Beckett's 'visual writing'. To the fore in the selection of texts for this CD were the author's so-called 'eye pieces', together with some of his observation and movement sketches: Molloy L'image/the Image (1959), and Company (1980) three texts from different phases in the life of the Irish author and Nobel literature laureate. They are read by actors Natasha Parry, Barry McGovern, and Raymond Federman. The playing directions for the instrumentalist on this CD (Uwe Dieksen) are derived directly from the so-called sucking stones sequence in Beckett's novel Molloy , where the author has his protagonists invent three variations of the correct way to suck 16 pebbles distributed between two coat or trouser pockets. Everything takes place inside the head, and yet these image provoking speech rituals find their way to the outside. Everything becomes the listener's projection room. We look on the speakers as we would an open, exposed interior. Speech is its own dissecting instrument. Existence is transferred into speech, being is removed from its time. The images remain, the sound of speech remains in which the secret of an entire world is concealed."

SAMUEL BECKETT, PLAYWRIGHT, WINNER OF NOBEL PRIZE; AT 83
Author: By Charles Campbell, Associated Press Date: Wednesday, December 27, 1989

Section:
OBITUARY PARIS Samuel Beckett, the Irish-born poet, playwright and novelist whose despairing vision of the world in "Waiting For Godot" symbolized the pessimistic strain in modern writing, has died in Paris, his adopted home. He was 83. Mr. Beckett died Friday, but the death was not announced until after a private funeral service yesterday. His publisher, Jerome Linden, said Mr. Beckett died of respiratory failure. The model of an artist who makes no compromise for the sake of popularity, the Nobel Prize-winning writer attributed his success to "an intuitive sense of despair." "There are no landmarks in my work," Mr. Beckett once said. "We are all adrift. We must invent a world in which to survive, but even this invented world is pervaded by fear and guilt. Our existence is hopeless." Mr. Beckett lived in Paris since 1937, working with the Resistance during World War II, for which he won the Croix de Guerre with a gold star in 1945. He once said he preferred "France in war to Ireland in peace."

Restaurant The Pub The Restaurant The Menu Entertainment Guide ... Home An Introduction
Samuel Barclay Beckett (1906-1989) was the Irish playwright, novelist, and Everyman whose comedy Waiting For Godot is the single most performed theater work of the last fifty years. His plays and books were stripped-down and bleakly funny black comedies about the nature of being human, and the hopeless outlook of their characters were a direct allusion to his despair about life. But Beckett's famous resistance to publicity and unwillingness to meet public life only fuelled public fascination. It resulted in his becoming even more of a literary legend. He wrote only in French after 1947, translating his works later himself. The Writings
After his novel Murphy came out in French in 1951, Beckett wrote "Molloy and what followed [it] became possible the day I became aware of my stupidity. Then I began to write the things I feel." By writing in exile and in Paris, he was following in the footsteps of his mentor and fellow Dubliner, James Joyce. His first successful novel Molloy came out in 1951 and was followed by the other novels of his trilogy Malone Dies
