Dr. Paul Berg Joins Gilead Sciences Board of Directors Foster City, CA, April 30, 1998 - Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) announced today that Paul Berg, Ph.D., has been appointed to the Company's Board of Directors. Dr. Berg, 72, is Cahill Professor in Cancer Research in the Department of Biochemistry at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where he has been on the faculty since 1959. He has been the Director of the Stanford University Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine since its founding in 1985 and was head of the National Institutes of Health's Human Genome Project Scientific Advisory Committee. Dr. Berg has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1966 and received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1980 for his studies of the biochemistry of nucleic acids, particularly recombinant DNA. Dr. Berg also serves on the Boards of Directors of Affymetrix, Inc. and Transgene, Inc. and is the founder and a scientific advisor to Schering-Plough's DNAX Research Institute. "We are indeed fortunate that Paul Berg has agreed to join the Gilead team," said Donald H. Rumsfeld, Chairman of Gilead's Board of Directors. "His scientific judgment based on his long and distinguished career will be of benefit to our company as we continue to discover, develop and commercialize important new therapies for viral diseases."

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Berg, Paul US molecular biologist who, in 1972, spliced and combined into a single hybrid the DNA from an animal tumour virus (SV40) and the DNA from a bacterial virus, using gene-splicing techniques developed by others.   • Oswald T. Avery - Made the momentous announcement, in 1944, that DNA is the carrier of genetic information.
      The National Library of Medicine's "Profiles in Science" website has a page dedicated to Avery which includes personal letters, photographs of pages from his laboratory notebooks and copies of his original research articles, among other items.
    Paul Berg - Pioneered "recombinant DNA" techniques by performing inital experiments involving the joining or ligation of DNA segments arising from different parental molecules. Erwin Chargaff - Performed paper chromatography experiments leading to the observation that in DNA the number of adenine molecules always equals the number of thymine molecules (A=T) and the number of guanine molecules always equals the number of cytosine molecules (C=G). The A=T/G=C relationships became known as Chargaff's rules.

For press information, contact Gabrielle Maxey Marking the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA, Nobel Laureate Dr. Paul Berg will speak at The University of Memphis Thursday, April 17. His lecture, "Biotechnology: Confronting the Polity," will begin at 8 p.m. in the Fogelman Executive Center, Room 136. The public is welcome at this free event. Berg will examine the nature of threats to biomedical research from the government and its citizens as exemplified by the recombinant DNA events and the debate on human embryonic stem cells and cloning. He is the Robert W. and Vivian K. Cahill Professor of Cancer Research emeritus and director emeritus of the Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine at Stanford University, and continues to do research in the Department of Biochemistry. Berg shared the 1980 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his fundamental studies of the biochemistry of nucleic acids, with particular regard to recombinant DNA.

Evidence presented in the Origin of Species challenged both the accepted scientific and religious views of Western culture that had been taught for centuries. The first edition sold out on the day it was published. Theologians quickly labeled Darwin "the most dangerous man in England"... Yet, after reading it, Darwin's friend and colleague T. H.
