    Berg, Paul (1926-)

American biochemist who studied the techniques of cutting DNA using gene-sequence specific enzymes, originally innovated by Nathans and Hamilton Smith . Berg was able to improve the technique so that he could create new patterns of genes. This technique is known as recombinant DNA and is the method through which genetic engineering is practiced. Berg shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in chemistry with Sanger and Walter Gilbert. Nathans Sanger Smith (Hamilton)

29 January 2003 Forty-one American Nobel laureates have signed a declaration opposing war with Iraq. The declaration was organised by Walter Kohn, a theoretical physicist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon. The signatories include 19 winners of the physics prize. The declaration reads: "The undersigned oppose a preventive war against Iraq without broad international support. Military operations against Iraq may indeed lead to a relatively swift victory in the short term. But war is characterized by surprise, human loss and unintended consequences. Even with a victory, we believe that the medical, economic, environmental, moral, spiritual, political and legal consequences of an American preventive attack on Iraq would undermine, not protect, US security and standing in the world." The signatories include Norman Ramsey, who worked on the Manhattan Project, and Charles Townes, a former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon. Townes was also chairman of a federal panel that studied nuclear warheads.

D. in biochemistry. He became a Stanford professor in 1959. Berg, in , combined DNA from the cancer-causing monkey virus SV40 with that of the virus lambda to create the first recombinant DNA molecules. However, upon realizing the dangers of his experiment, terminated it before it could be taken any further. He immediately, in what is now called the "Berg Letter," proposed a one year moratorium on recombinant DNA research, in order for safety concerns to be worked out. Berg later continued his recombinant DNA research, and was awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in chemistry. In 1991, Berg accepted a position as the head of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the

    Harbinger of danger
    By Betsy Mason
The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) presented its Public Service Award on Sunday to biologist Matthew Meselson for nearly 40 years of campaigning against chemical and biological weapons programs. Meselson, currently a professor of Molecular and Cell Biology at Harvard University, has had a long and distinguished career in molecular genetics. As a graduate student under Linus Pauling in 1953, Meselson, along with Frank Stahl , proved the theory of semi-conservative DNA replication with an experiment that has been called "the most beautiful experiment in biology." Later he worked with Sydney Brenner and Francois Jacob to describe messenger RNA for the first time. Paul Berg , winner of the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work with recombinant DNA, presented the award. He told the hundreds of biologists attending the ceremony, "We honor Matt not for his abundant research accomplishments, but for the impact he has had on public policy by applying his intelligence and investigative skills and determination to issues of war and peace." Meselson has been involved in policy issues concerning chemical and biological warfare since 1963 when he worked for the Arms Control Agency. In his sobering yet inspirational acceptance speech, Meselson offered the rapt audience what he called two "irrefutable propositions."
